The Tank Johnson Files

After thinking about the Tank Johnson signing, here’s where I am on the whole thing. The Cowboys probably did the smart thing here. Jay Ratliff is a player I love, but he’s a little under-sized for the position and he has no proven backup so that means he will be playing a lot of downs. By mid-season, he could start wearing down and we would have no real help. So getting Tank Johnson on board to add to the rotation over the last half of the season will be a welcome addition. Johnson is definitely the most talented player at the position the Cowboys could add right now, and they added him for peanuts.

Of course, that first paragraph ignores the elephant in the room. Tank Johnson has made some very bad choices in his life and is one more bad decision from facing a huge suspension from Roger Goodell. Johnson’s history with violence and guns makes me nervous, some habits and some people from his past will probably be hard for him to get rid of, but he has to do it. His police blotter is pretty long and he has been convicted of charges and served prison time. In other words, these aren’t just accusations.

I’m willing to give Tank Johnson a shot at redemption. One shot, any silliness and he has to go. Jerry Jones is making Calvin Hill available and is doing what he can to keep Tank on the straight and narrow. But really, it’s up to Tank. If he wants to play football again for any period of time, he has to clean up his own act.

So just how much did the Cowboys pay Tank?

The Cowboys will pay Johnson a prorated base salary of $510,000 this year, depending on how many games he plays, and he will earn a $605,000 base salary in 2008 with the chance to earn more money through incentives. (ed. note - the prorated salary is expected to be $225,000 this year)

Wow, that’s the absolute minimum with no guaranteed money. That means they can get rid of him easily and quickly if he strays off the path. It also means that if he can play up to his talents then the Cowboys got a steal and could help them out for next year, too. Smart contract from Jerry.

When can he play?

Now that Johnson is signed, his suspension reverts to the Cowboys, whose bye week falls on the NFL's eighth week of the regular season. That means Johnson will not be eligible to play his first game until Nov. 11, when the Cowboys play at the New York Giants, according to NFL spokesman Greg Aiello. Johnson will not be able to practice or even work out at the team's facility until Nov. 5, the day after the Cowboys play at Philadelphia in their eighth game of the season.

However, NFL commissioner Roger Goodell has the option to reduce Johnson's suspension to six games. There is also a chance the league could count the eighth week of the season, the Cowboys' bye week, as the final week for Johnson's suspension, meaning he could also return for the Nov. 4 game at Philadelphia.

Kevin Sherrington sounds skeptical about the whole thing.

Calvin Watkins discusses on-the-field issues. Like how will Tank fit in a 3-4.

Finally, here’s what Tank’s agent said.

"For a lot of reasons, he really just felt the Cowboys were the right fit," said Johnson's agent, Jerrold Colton. "He's so thankful to them for giving him this opportunity. He is very determined to prove they made a wise decision in believing in him."

Please Tank, prove it was a wise decision and don’t embarrass the Cowboys organization. If he does, then we only have ourselves to blame, but that’s the risk you sometimes take.

Weighing in on gun possession

The East Coast and the big cities of America have come to believe that anyone who possesses a gun is dangerous and a bad guy. But the bad guys do have guns and the Chicago area has proven to be a target for high profile athletes being attacked in their own home.

In the West, guns are a way of life in rural areas. In Oregon I began carrying a gun in my car after the Portland Police informed me of a gang which intended to rob me of my business proceeds. They learned this through an informant. Since we handled significant sums of cash daily I applied and went through the training and received a concealed handgun permit. Does that make me a bad guy? I certainly never ever threatened anyone with it. Eventually I gave all my guns away (I inherited over 100 guns in a collection of mostly antiques). And having moved away from Portland I don't need a gun. But many of my neighbors have them and it does not bother me.

Assault rifles are legal in the US with modifications I believe to the mechanism to prevent automatic firing. For example the M-16 is illegal but the same gun is sold legally here as the AR-15 without the selective capability of automatic firing. Nothing in the stories I have read has indicated that Tank owned illegal assault rifles (except as a condition of his probation). He made a mistake by carrying in Illinois in his car. Owning guns at home looks more to me like police targeting him than anything.

As for violence only 1 instance of violence was charged against Tank and that was for resisting arrest. Since those charges were completely dropped they are highly suspect. His bodyguard was killed by gunfire but not by Tank (they have charged a local gangster). Bad judgment to be in a club with these instances hanging over you - no question. As Coach Parcells would say "Nothing good can come out of being in those places".

I think this was a good signing. I think Tank will understand that one false step as you have noted above will end his NFL career at little cost to the Cowboys. Where it can hurt us is if Tank fails here we cannot make this sort of signing again for several years to avoid a reputation for harboring bad guys.

And it looks like

Jones set his contract up so that they can afford to let him go just as easily as they can afford to keep him.

Yep

I like the contract best of all. I got nervous yesterday when I heard 2 year deal - but should have assumed Jerry would handle it right.

I have a lot of respect for Lovie Smith

as a coach and as a person, if he gives Tank his endorsement then that makes me feel a lot better about signing him.

True

Lovie's a good guy and his endorsement has to count for something.

Being from the NYCity area...

There is a negative bias around here regarding guns, as there are not many places to just "go out back and hunt" ... as my brother does at his place outside Richmond, Va.

Anyone that has experienced the negative side of gangs has an inherent fear of assault rifles, for good cause.   There are usually two sides to every story, and the story/history of guns is no different.

But I don't think anyone is judging Tank solely on the gun possession charge.  It is more a function of too many red flags... where there is smoke, there is fire.

I for one don't have my rosey colored glasses on when it comes to Tank, but I do think everyone deserves a fresh start, and I am happy that the Cowboys picked him up.  Ironically, it is things like TO trying to fit in around here that will hopefully rub off well on Tank.  I am sure the guy doesn't like his named dragged through the mud, and is more than eager to show his brighter side.

Funny how Ray Lewis was in a similar situation, yet is one of the NFL's prominent leaders.  Anyway, I like a little insanity in a NT, so here's to a long and successful stay in Dallas.

I'm sure

Grizz will find Mickey's comments when he writes, but he hates this move. I was listening to his show today and he had nothing but negative to say about Tank. I wouldn't be surprised if Mickey's future articles on Tank will be somewhat negative.

T.O, time to pay up

Some idiots just never learn, the league has fined T.O for using the football as a prop during his asinine touchdown celebration, so lets recap, a penatly for his nonsense and now a fine, but he must be from the same mold as Tank Johnson.

You mean

an immature clown is the same as a convicted felon? I'm not seeing it.

by dunkman on Sep 19, 2007 3:00 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

They're not the same dunk

you know Deke is an admitted T.O. hater so take take that comment for what its worth.

T.O. might be a jerk, but he's never broken any laws, just stupid NFL rules.

Let's not drink too much Kool Aid

TO was nothing short of a cancer in both SF and Philly.  Ask ANY fan of philly what they think of TO.  ANYONE.  He did far more than a few immature moves, and only the most selective of memories can white-wash a very questionable past.

Has TO been a good boy since Dallas?  Not quite, but let's just say good enough.  His antics include pissing off BP in pre-season last year, the whole "O-D / PR girl disaster" ... with last years WR coach... to name the highlights.  Not to mention his case of the dropsies that cost us at least one game.

TO is and continues to be a risky endeavor.  One that hopefully will pay off.  But don't white-wash it.

look, I dislike T.O. as much as anyone, but

this season he has been a team player. Sure, his endzone demonstration was stupid, but the penalty really didn't hurt us.

Other than that, his behavior has been really good. He loves Romo and his coaches, so it would really surprise me to see T.O. start "acting" up again.

I agree...

I just didn't like the "just NFL rules" ... as it seemed to overlook too much.

He has been a pleasant surprise, especially this year.  He seems to be growing up, becoming a man.  Funny, but I actually expect good things of him going forward... certainly NOT where I was this time last year.

OK

so he's not a great guy.  What I see is a hyper-sensitive, emotionally immature guy with an ego that needs constant affirmation, coupled with the ability to feel deeply wounded beyond normal, rational bounds.  So at times in his career he's had problems with team mates and has been difficult to deal with by coaches. In what world does that make him a thing like Tank or Pacman? Yet his "antics" - none of which threatened another human's life or limb - garner intense, almost insane attention, while only the most vile criminal acts make the highlights. Name all nine Bengals who were arrested over the past couple of years and their offenses. Yeah, I can't either.

And we can't lay the "OD incident" on him. That was media-driven hyperventilation. He had a bad reaction to supplements, and the media and his PR girl had a bad reaction to a non-event. That's like blaming Katrina victims for bringing bad publicity to New Orleans...

I'm neither a super fan nor big hater of TO. I recognize that he is risk in terms of messing up some team chemistry if things don't go his way. But as I've said before, he doesn't even make the top ten of bad guys in the NFL.

count me as a doubter regarding Tank

I don't know the guy personally, but I'm definitely opposed to adding convicted felons to the roster, I don't care how good they are.

I feel Ayodele could give Ratliff 10 snaps a game which would keep him good to go all season. I seriously doubt if Johnson is going to come in and play lights out after sitting out all season.

Questionable move by Jones, but hopefully it pays off.

If I'm not mistaken...

Tank Johnson has never been convicted of a felony.  Everything I've found indicates all incidents were misdemeanors.  Please correct me if I'm wrong.

I do not think you are wrong

I read the write-ups in Wikipedia which is a pretty accurate source. He was charged with resisting arrest but the charges were dropped. If he remodeled a cop's face he would still be in jail. What they did was charge him because they had used mace on him and didn't want him to sue them. No felonies, simply gun possession (with no use) each time.
