Terry Glenn to see several doctors about his knee
Here’s the DMN on the Terry Glenn situation.
According to several sources, the veteran wide receiver reinjured his surgically repaired right knee and could miss two weeks, if not more. Glenn's agent, Jimmy Gould, said no decisions have been made, and Glenn will seek advice from several doctors.
The Cowboys' official Web site initially reported that Glenn would miss the season, quoting owner and general manager Jerry Jones. But shortly thereafter, the Web site amended the story to say Glenn will be sidelined at least two weeks.
Glenn began running routes Saturday and worked his way into a full practice Wednesday, but his knee swelled, and he was held out of Thursday's practice. The current injury is not believed to be related to the earlier surgery.
So it’s a new injury? Weird. This story just doesn’t sound good. Consulting other doctors could indicate a difference of opinion somewhere.
On the positive side, I’ve liked Patrick Crayton for a while and thought he could be a #2 WR in this league. We’ll get to see now, at least for a couple of weeks. Behind him is Sam Hurd who I also have confidence in. Wide receiver was one of our strongest positions, so this one isn’t as bad as OLB or CB. But still, we’ll miss a player like Terry Glenn, especially if he is out for the season.
This brings me back to something else. Shouldn’t someone for the Dallas Cowboys website say something about what happened? If it was a hack or spoof, let us know. Maybe they didn’t even know about it. Well, I’ve alerted them to it if they didn’t. I asked for a response from them.
If it wasn’t a fake then they put up an article that said Terry Glenn would be out for the season and had a quote from Jerry Jones that seemed to confirm it. Rob Phillips wrote it (if it wasn’t a fake), so either he was messing around with some creative fiction that just happened to get posted, or Jerry Jones thought Glenn was out, and the Cowboys website posted the info before they changed their mind, for whatever reason. I guess that’s what we want to know, was the original article true, and what happened twenty minutes later when it was no longer operational. I’m just saying. At least tell us someone hacked the site and posted fraudulent information. If not, don’t we deserve some kind of explanation?
In the absence of information, conspiracies will fill the vacuum. My immediate thought was that the Cowboys were working on a trade to fill his spot and they didn’t want other teams to know they were desperate. But that seems wrong now. Why would Jones even tell anybody until after the fact if that was the case, especially a media entity? My other theory is that the Cowboys doctors think Glenn is done, but Glenn wants to get other opinions. Maybe Jerry jumped the gun and Glenn’s agent said hold the phone until we get another opinion here; maybe it has to do with injury settlements, or being placed on IR, maybe he's trying to get Terry through the weekend so he is on the roster for the first game. I don’t know if any of that makes sense anyway because I can't keep up with the Byzantium rules of NFL contracts.
Then again, maybe it was a simple fake, a clever hack or spoof that fooled me and other Cowboy fans. Either DallasCowboys.com will let us know, or if Glenn is suddenly out for the season in the next few days, we’ll know there were other motives afoot.

OK, on to other things. Now we know why Wade Wilson was using the banned substances. He was trying to battle impotence caused by his diabetes. This actually explains a lot, like why Jerry Jones didn’t appear upset at all by what happened, he had been told the truth. Read the article and you can see what Wilson says sounds absolutely true. The only problem I guess is that he wasn’t getting the stuff legally from a doctor and the NFL had to act. Good to know the whole story now, which was probably hidden because of the stigma of impotence.

Wow, the Colts smoked the Saints. I thought the Saints might be the best team in the NFC, but this certainly doesn’t help confirm that.

scary
i think the thing most amateur handicapper overlook is injuries.
in Parcells' first season i think Dallas had the fewest starter's games missed in the league and the team made the playoffs.
the next year we lost Flo and the RT and started Petitti and Tucker (neither of whom are on NFL rosters) and were abysmal.
if this team could have been 12-4 with everyone, then without Newsome, Ellis and Terry Glenn we are looking at a 7-9 squad.
if they arent missing the whole year then we are somewhere in between.
i guess the worst case scenario is we get 2 pretty good draft picks (and 21 weeks of pure hell).
ugggghhhhhhhhhhhhhh

my guess
would be that the cowboys doctors believe glenn needs the microfracture surgery but he doesn't want it...so the reason for seond and third opionions. just a guess obviously.
we do lack speed at WR right now.

Terry Glenn speed yes
but Miles Austin ran a 4.47 - 40 at the combine. He is not anywhere near the route runner as Glenn but he can stretch the field on occasion. With a timing pass offense the need for pure speed seems less than being at the right spot on time. Crayton (4.52) will be fine at that and he somehow gets great separation. I am hoping Terry can get healthy and get back quickly. If it is micro-fracture his career may be over. Don't forget that Stanback was a 100 meter sprinter at UW. Not sure how much back he is from his injury to regain his speed though.

Miles has straight line speed
but isn't quick and doesn't look as fast in pads. Randal Williams could run a fast 40 but didn't have football speed either. I still think they should make guys run the 40 in helmets and shoulder pads at the combine. makes no sense for them not to.
Stanback is fast and quick...I remember watching him at UW but not sure if he is ready to contribute a lot this year.

not true
T.O. is as fast as anyone on the field and Hurd and Austin can fly. Crayton is our only true possession receiver.
by Terry on Sep 7, 2007 7:33 AM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
Hurd cannot fly
He ran like a 4.6 forty and part of his negatives was no second gear for the deep ball.

He's fast enough
Owen's buddy Jerry Rice was no 40 sprint champion but he played fast enough. I'm not saying we have rice in the wings but speed will not be our problem. If the line is playing well Romo can get them the ball. Look at what New Orleans (except for last night) did last year with Kopper and that former tight end they drafted. Of course maybe we could trade for Joey Galloway to get some speed (just kidding).

I love Hurd
but let's not confuse him with a speed burner. And I love how people always bring up Rice. There's a reason for that, Rice was a very special, one-of-a-kind receiver.
Anyway the point is not how effective he'll be, I think he will be good, I was just pointing out he's not that fast.
by Dave Halprin on Sep 7, 2007 8:49 AM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
I think the point was
having a receiver that can stretch the defense which I think Hurd can do. He might not have the blazing speed of Glenn, but he can beat guys deep.
by Terry on Sep 7, 2007 8:52 AM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
Anybody can beat a guy deep
It happens all the time. I think what people are talking about is a guy with speed who consistently forces the defenses to adjust by keeping a safety back or playing zone coverage. Hurd is not that guy.
by Dave Halprin on Sep 7, 2007 8:54 AM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
doesn't T.O. do that?
He's one of the most feared receivers in the league and teams respect his deep speed so teams will have a safety back there anyway to account for T.O.
With a healthy T.O. on the field, Crayton, Hurd or Austin will always see single coverage, not to mention Witten.
by Terry on Sep 7, 2007 9:00 AM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
All things equal
more speed is better than less, but its the whole package. And TO is a burner, so now we have one instead of two burners. I would just hate to see them sign a 3rd string or worse vet to play ahead of one of our young wr's.
by BigE on Sep 7, 2007 9:01 AM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
New Orleans
has Reggie Bush as a threat. The defense always has to account for him which opens up everyone else. We don't have that. It's the same tactic Philly uses with westbrook. The safety and LB have to account for the speed at RB so the WR's have less attention on them.
by bob maplethorpe on Sep 7, 2007 9:14 AM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
TO draws double teams, Witten is a Pro-Bowler
We have skill at the receiving positions. Your point about the RB receiving threat is well taken though, but I wonder if that is becasue of our personnel or because of our game plans and execution. We have not run many screens in a long time. And the ones we have run seemed to fool no one.

A word about Wade Wilson
As a diabetic for many years I relate to Wade's search for alternative medical treatment. The main stream medical establishment is about 5-10 years behind the cutting edge in treating diabetes and its complications. Every month you see your body lose a little ground and you fight for that ground as hard as you can in any way that you can.
From the story I believe Wade thought he was legal by ordering from a doctor. Even the feds have no interest in charging the users - the fraud was committed by the pharmacy and the "doctor". The NFL has way over-reacted here in my opinion. If Wade did not give this stuff to players then it is his body and he is not a performer to regulate what goes into his body. The Commissioner seems to be overreaching and I suspect that Wade would have a high degree of success in bringing legal action to overturn him. The story seems to indicate that Wade has accepted his punishment so that is not likely (hard to imagine being allowed to continue to work in the NFL if you sure the Commissioner). And I am one who has applauded the tough new standards for player conduct.

I been saying all along don't count on Glenn
he has always had that injury bug - - I was not counting on him this year
by Arkcowboys on Sep 7, 2007 12:48 AM CDT reply actions 0 recs
over the last five years
T.O has missed more games than Terry Glenn, so is T.O injury prone.

Reche Caldwell
is still out there I think
he had 137 catches and 1700 yards last year

sorry that his total for career
last year had 61 catches for 760 yards

Hold off on the WR signing
Wait until after the Gints game, and also there maybe a slim chance Glenn isn't done for the season.
On a brighter note, The Saints looked Horrible. I thought they would be amongst the tops in the NFC, but the Colts humiliated them. As has been said already, one less team to worry about as a threat.
by APerfectStar on Sep 7, 2007 1:19 AM CDT reply actions 0 recs
if we hold off
I tell you this is the end for Glenn - he has always had nagging injuries - so he will play a game or two then he will be out the season - then who wants him back at 34 I don't - I say jump on Caldwell
by Arkcowboys on Sep 7, 2007 1:44 AM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
Caldwell couldn't catch a cold, let alone a ball
and runs poor routes, why do you think he's on the street.
by Deke on Sep 7, 2007 4:20 AM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
Caldwell sucks dude
I'd take Hurd and Miles over him anyday.

Go easy on Bug Eyes
Do you remember the look he had when he dropped those play-off passes? Hilarious.

Hashmarks says Glenn is done
and the Cowboys just didn't want to release the news yet.
look
here

Doesn't look promising
Big turn around from a day ago when it looked like Glenn would be ready for the opener. We need a deep threat, either from within or a street free agent. Is Quincy Morgan still unsigned?
by APerfectStar on Sep 7, 2007 6:06 AM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
Morgan??
wow, you guys are really reaching at the bottom of the barrell. What good is a guy's deep speed if he sucks?
If being a good receiver didn't matter, teams would just sign track stars.
Don't panic, our youngins will just have to come through.
by Terry on Sep 7, 2007 7:40 AM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
If he's done you have to sign someone
Obviously, there aren't going to be any nice options...actually I would consider bringing in Antonio Bryant (i think he's suspended for 4 games) he has the talent...just not sure if he and TO could co-exist, lol.
that would be a ballsy move.
by bob maplethorpe on Sep 7, 2007 8:28 AM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
why do you have to sign someone?
We have T.O., Crayton, Hurd and Austin, why do we need anyone else.
Anyone who is currently on the street certainly won't be as good as Hurd or Austin.
We'd have to make a trade to get somebody better.
by Terry on Sep 7, 2007 8:42 AM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
you want to depend on austin and hurd?
if your plan is to get to the superbowl then yes, you sign a vet. You are talking about 3 guys (including crayton) who have little to no history as starting WR's. I like Crayton but I'm not convinced he's a #2 WR. I love Hurd's hands but I don't know if he can consistently get open and Austin (like I said before) almost got cut.
And if you really want to get depressed, then remember TO and Crayton haven't been exactly durable over the past 2 years.
by bob maplethorpe on Sep 7, 2007 9:11 AM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
why is a vet better?
just because they have experience doesn't mean they're better. They're unemployed for a reason, if they were good, they wouldn't have been cut in the first place.
by Terry on Sep 7, 2007 9:55 AM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
Easy big fella
Terry, I said I don't think we should run out and sign a vet. I just was asking if Morgan was on a roster...it's called thinking ahead.
by APerfectStar on Sep 7, 2007 4:36 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
Q-Morgan was cut by the Broncos, Tom...
by kcbrett5 on Sep 7, 2007 10:24 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
thinking ahead for what?
even if TG doesn't come back, we still have 5 wr on the roster. If another wr goes down, then yes, we'll have to start looking for help, but nobody out on the street at this time is better than our backups.
by Terry on Sep 7, 2007 10:33 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
You answerered your own question
What if either another WR goes down with injury, or the young guys can't get it done?
by APerfectStar on Sep 8, 2007 12:21 AM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
well if that happens
we pick these guys up then, they'll be available, nobody is beating down their doors to sign them now.

Getting Sick of Injury Optimism
I can appreciate being optimistic when it comes to preseason injuries, but between "day to day" Greg Ellis, "day to day" Terrance Newman, and "1-2 weeks" Terry Glenn I'm starting to wonder if the Cowboys hired Saddam Hussein's former minister of information ("the Americans have been defeated at the gates of Baghdad") to handle their injury reports. It'd also be nice if their doctors started prognosing the injuries properly the FIRST time as well.
by jmangell0830 on Sep 7, 2007 7:43 AM CDT reply actions 0 recs
Plus don't forget
that we knew TG wouldn't be around forever. He has actually been more durable in Dallas then anywhere in his career so as long as our hands are forced, let's get excited for the next generation of recievers.
