Garrett offered BALT job

Sources told ESPN's Ed Werder that Dallas Cowboys offensive coordinator Jason Garrett has been offered the Baltimore Ravens coaching position.

Garrett has not made a decision yet.

The Ravens are seeking a successor for Brian Billick, who was fired after the regular season.

Garrett, who arrived at the Ravens' training complex for the second interview on Tuesday morning, was the first candidate to have call-back sessions with the Ravens and Falcons.

Garrett, 41, is a veteran of three seasons as an NFL assistant. He was hired by the Cowboys as offensive coordinator in 2007, after two seasons on the Miami Dolphins' staff. In 2007, he presided over a unit that statistically ranked No. 3 in the league, but struggled in the final month of the year and in Sunday's playoff loss.

A former Princeton quarterback, Garrett played 12 seasons in the NFL as a backup, serving stints with Dallas (1993-99), the Giants (2000-03), Tampa Bay (2004), and Miami (2004). He also played in the World League (1991) and in the CFL (1991).

Star-divide

Hashmarks senior correspondent Ed Werder is reporting that the Ravens have offered Cowboys offensive coordinator Jason Garrett their head coaching job. He hasn't made a decision yet, but a league source is telling Werder there's a "60-40" chance that he'll accept the job.

Garrett and his wife, Brill, arrived at the the Ravens' practice facility at 10 a.m. today. Moments ago, I was told that he has requested a room and a phone inside the facility. I'm sure he'll be exchanging calls with his agent David Dunn and Cowboys owner Jerry Jones. Dunn also represents Ravens linebacker Ray Lewis and tight end Todd Heap.

In an interesting twist, I'm told former defensive coordinator Rex Ryan showed up at the facility about 45 minutes ago. The Ravens could be attempting to convince Ryan to accept some type of assistant head coach-defense position. I've been told by two sources, though, that Eagles secondary coach John Harbaugh is Baltimore's second choice.

Hopefully all of you were listening to Mike Tirico and Michele Tafoya on ESPN Radio about 30 minutes ago. They had an outstanding segment with a Dallas-based blogger.

Back with more coaching news in a bit.

Jerry is probably giving him

assurances he'll be the HC in Dallas after Phillips along with a hefty raise. Whether he takes that "gentlemen's agreement" or not, we will soon know.

why would he want to go there?

their QB situation is a disaster and has been for a long, long time. For a bright guy who seems like he will have lots of options this year and in future years, this is not a good career move if he accepts. I am not convinced that he will take it.

Numbers Game

There are only 32 of these jobs on Earth.  You may only get the opportunity once.  You have to consider it.  If I were Garrett I would take the job.  Newsome is a good GM and much of the problems in BAL stem directly from Billick.  Not saying I want Garrett to leave, just that I would take it.

I would only take it...

...if Newsome promise to spend more 1st and 2nd round picks on offense.

If he wasn't interested

he wouldn't have interviewed. It would be preferable if Jerry's Old Buddy The Tuna made the call on Sparano now, so we can hedge our position a little on OC.
If JJ is convinced RedBall is our next HC, make him the AsstHC, just like we did with Sparano and give Wade a 2-3 year window he deserves.
If JJ isn't, then Cam Cameron, Hudson Houck make great fill-ins, all of whom have had success w Wade at SD. Lastly, Ray Sherman is on staff for the open OC and the NE OC is in position if this team doesn't deliver for Wade.

Cam Cameron and Hudson Houck

Lets bring in these seasoned vets that we won't have to worry about them leaving, cuz neither will be in line for a HC job. If Garrett doesn't go this year...I can assure you in a year or so, he will.

Money Game?

Reports are that Jerry, without knowing what the Ravens are offering Garrett, has told Garrett that he'll match it in terms of salary.

Jerry is taking a page out of the Dan Snyder book of overpaying assistants to retain them.  With Wade being a defensive coach, I guess I don't have a problem with paying your Asst. HC and OC head coach money....but I'm still not happy with Redball's play calling!

on one hand

Garrett knows he'll be the lead horse for this job after Wade retires. (Yes, I am convinced that it will be a retirement, not a firing. Jerry is long past his days of PR nightmares)
On the other, what if TO is not himself? What if Marion plays like a fourth rounder, the line suffers injuries, and the team goes 9-7?
I hate to say this, but if I were Garrett I'd jump on this oportunity if I were assured time to rebuild and a commitment to the offensive side of the ball. Baltimore's been a consistently very, very well run team throughout this decade.

John Clayton just said that ...

...if Garrett takes the job he will bring C. Cameron on as the OC which sucks because I'd like to see Cameron take the OC here if Garrett leaves.

Didn't even think about....

Garrett and Sparano could each take one of our offensive assistants to Balt and Miami to be the OC.

John Garrett - gone..no big deal.

I think Skip Pete and Ray Sherman are not likely candidates....Wade Wilson either....but it's hard to know with any certainty.

Would also guess that Wes Phillips will stay with daddy's team.

I think Ray Sherman could be our next O.C.

The offensive players love him according to the DMN blog

I agree, T.O. loves him and we need

to keep Eldorado very happy, plus he probably would keep the same offense Garrett employed. We want as much continuity as possible.

Don't like the history...

Sherman has been an OC in the past, but never for more than one consecutive season...Jets in '94, Steelers in '98 and Vikings in '99.....why one and done?  Something is not right there, and at 58 years old or whatever he is ...it makes you wonder why he hasn't had more or longer opportunities in the past.  Some coaches are just better cut out to be position coaches.  Maybe Sherman doesn't do well calling plays.  Not sure, but I don't think he has the resume for me to name him the OC based on the fact that he gets along with my #1 Wr.

41 years old....

You know how it work...young, enthusiastic, fresh ideas....etc., etc.

By no stretch of the imagination is Garrett ready to be a HC, but I also thought the same thing of Mike Tomlin (who is much younger than Garrett) last year.  He did ok in Pittsburgh, but in both situations the young HC needs to be surrounded by guys like 68 year old DC Dick Leabeau (Pitt) to be successful.

Wondering about the one and done thing too, Fargo

That's why I asked if anybody had any real research on those years as in what happened and what offense did he run. Those are curious questions to me. If Garrett leaves, then I'll have to find that out.

That one year thing really stuck out to me as an issue.

Hoping he doesn't take it

There's 2 ways to look at this, one is that he wanted the interview experience and wants to turn the screws on Jerry to get equal money to stay (fair enough).  The other is that he actually wants the job.  It's a decent job for a head coach; the division is winnable and they have good management.  However, their passing game personnel is woefully poor compared to ours.  It's a toss up.  There will be some interesting maneuverings going on for Cam Cameron if Garrett takes this job, from the sound of it.  You'd have to think Cameron would rather be Dallas' OC with Wade, given our personnel, all things being equal.

Garrett's staff

According to ESPN's John Clayton, the plan Cowboys offensive coordinator Jason Garrett has presented the Ravens has former Dolphins assistants Cam Cameron and Dom Capers going with him to Baltimore as offensive and defensive coordinators, respectively.

Jerry better be on the ball if this goes down...

Although I think Ray Sherman would do admirable...Cameron has worked magic on offenses in the past, and Hudson Houck MUST be considered as O Line Coach.

..I'm quite anxious to see how this all pans out...

I'm still holding out hope

that Garrett stays. But, I can see why he'd want to take the Ravens job. Newsome is a great GM, and Garrett is a go-getter. He might want to take that HC job a year earlier, instead of waiting for Wade to retire and take the Cowboys HC spot.

One thing is certain, Jerry Jones will pay whatever he has to, to keep Garrett. Let's hope his Cowboy ties are the deciding factor.
