More Cowboys assistant coach news
As the coaching carousel turns.
Here’s what we know up to now.
Todd Archer, along with various other sources, is reporting that Jason Garrett left Atlanta and was scheduled to meet with Jerry Jones Wednesday night.
According to multiple sources, Garrett was scheduled to meet with the Cowboys owner and general manager Wednesday night after returning from Atlanta, where he had a second interview with Falcons officials about becoming their head coach.
So Jerry gets one more chance to open the checkbook and give Garrett a wink-nod agreement about the future. The fact that Garrett didn’t take either the Ravens or Falcons job after interviewing with both for a second time gives Jones and opening. I get the feeling he wasn’t knocked-out by the offer Baltimore gave him and that he probably has reservations about resurrecting a destitute Atlanta franchise. That’s just my guess as to why he didn’t take the jobs on the spot. It could also be he wanted to stay in Dallas all along and was just testing the waters. Then again, come Thursday he may just take one of those other offers and the coaching carousel will spin even faster for the Cowboys.
But, Mac Engel gives me hope with one un-sourced wishy-washy blurb.
The feeling around Valley Ranch is that Garrett will remain with the Cowboys and receive a significant raise.
I’ll take it.

Meanwhile, we have other assistant coach issues to deal with. First, we need a new offensive line coach. Engel says Jerry may already be on the job.
With Sparano hired in Miami, the question now becomes, who will replace him? The leading candidate appears to be former Cowboys offensive line coach Hudson Houck, who is looking for a job.
One NFL source said Jones has already contacted Houck.
Nice, I’d be happy with that move.
Now, for the troublesome news, everybody expects Sparano to raid the staff.
Todd Bowles is expected to be named the Dolphins’ assistant head coach, Paul Pasqualoni the defensive coordinator and Kacy Rodgers the defensive line coach.
All three coaches have expiring contracts and can’t negotiate with anybody but the Cowboys until Tuesday. Jerry has at least made a move to retain them.
Jones has offered contract extensions to secondary coach Todd Bowles, linebackers coach Paul Pasqualoni, and defensive line coach Kacy Rodgers.

In player news, Anthony Fasano needs surgery.
Tight end Anthony Fasano is expected to undergo surgery on his right shoulder Friday. Fasano has been troubled by the injury his first two years but opted not to have surgery following the 2006 season.
Also, we signed some new players to the bottom of the roster.
The Cowboys signed linebacker Tyson Smith, who ended the season on the team's practice squad, and cornerback Jerron Wishom, who spent parts of the last three seasons with Green Bay, San Francisco and Minnesota.

Todd Archer was a busy bee today and also cranked out a superficial look at the roster. Next week I’ll be going deep into the roster taking a look at where we stand.

I think this is good news
If he's coming back and giving Jerry an opportunity, then that bodes well for us. Who knows, he may have a HC or bust ultimatum or maybe Jerry will balk at the price, but I have a good feeling. We could use some good news.
YES!
Garrett stays and we get Houck back!
Disclaimer: I have no inside knowledge or sources that this actually will happen in real life, but it's the best news I have heard regarding the Cowboys since last Sunday, and I'll take anything I can get.
Who cares if Paul Pepperoni leaves
we got Dat Nguyen!

They are reporting tonight that
Garrett will announce his decision on Thursday. His choices are, remain here or take the Baltimore job. He is no longer considering the Atlanta job according to Serius Radio.

Also heard
that Detroit is going to shop Roy Williams. Guess where he could land??
He wants back in Texas apparently.
I think we are shipping our #1 to Detroit and drafting Felix Jones with the Browns pick.
Drafting a CB and WR in the second and third round.
We need another threat opposite TO. I think Roy would flurish under this offense just like Davis did when he left Arizona.

I wish...
Maybe we could just swap our Roy Williams for their Roy Williams....maybe the Lions wouldn't notice?

Fasano
Hopefully, the surgeons can find the backup tight end a new set of hands, as well.
Perhaps a blessing in disguise?
If Garrett stays and we can sign double-H to coach our O-line, obviously our offense is in pretty good shape.
After the way that our secondary has played, maybe losing Bowles is a blessing? Anyway, I don't think we need to worry much since Phillips is very well connected on the defensive side of the football and he should have no problem finding solid replacements. In fact, assuming that SD loses to NE this weekend, there could very well be expiring contracts amoung Tedd Cottrell's staff that might want to be reunited with Phillips and DC Brian Stewart.

Josh McDaniels
Not that Robert Kraft would match money like JJ is reportedly doing to retain Garrett, but just think how much money McDaniels is leaving on the table by not pursuing HC jobs.
It would be a hard to pass on a $2M raise!

Fire Wade Promote Garrett
And do as Garrett wants. That is bring in Cam Cameron as O.C. and Dom Capers as D.C.
With Capers as D.C. we wouldn't skip a beat and in fact might get better on D.

Hmmm, intriguing. Never thought of that, Conan...
However, The King has been so PR conscious over the last few years that I doubt he'd do something as drastic as firing Wade on da heels of a 13-win season.
I'd be VERY stunned if your scenario did take place... although it would personally pique my interest.
Dom Capers
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dom_Capers
Capers was known for his abilities as a defensive coach, and for his conservative play-calling on offense. Several TV announcers were known to predict Texans plays on occasion. He was also famous because he kept a 17 hour per day work schedule and sleeping just five hours per night, often on a couch in his office.
The Texans announced in 2005 following their dismal record of 2-14 (worst in NFL) that Capers would be fired January 2, 2006.
On January 23, 2006, the Miami Dolphins announced the hiring of Dom Capers as the team's defensive coordinator. There, he serves as assistant head coach. With a annual salary of $2.6 million, Capers is the highest paid assistant coach in the National Football League, alongside Washington Redskins assistant head coach Gregg Williams. On Thursday, January 3, Dom Capers was fired along with all offensive and defensive coaches. It is said that the new head coach may hire the assistants back

Focus in the playoffs
There has been debate on this site about assistant coaches interviewing during the playoffs and many of you say the rules are fine the way they are and that had nothing to do with the Cowboys poor play. Let me ask you - which coach did a better job last sunday, our OC or the Giants DC?
THis from ESPN.com
Atlanta has interviewed five other candidates for the position. If the team is still without a new coach by the weekend, and New York loses at Green Bay in Sunday's NFC Championship Game, the Falcons probably will seek permission to interview Giants defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo. The Falcons made such a request earlier, but the Giants rebuffed it because of the team's status in the playoffs.
Imagine that, telling a coach to focus on his current job instead of interviewing for jobs the week before a playoff game. Nope, I'm not bitter.
I agree they should change the rule back
Hands off a teams coaching staff during the playoffs.
But I thought the Giants coaches couldn't talk to any other teams regardless, because they did not have a bye week. So, this report must be incorrect, or else I don't have the rule correct.

Sparano
I usually disagree with most of the drivel that Jennifer Floyd Engel considers Cowboys info, but earlier I actually read one of her latest writeups and agreed with something.
Tony Sparano was probably the biggest disciplinarian on the Dallas coaching staff and now he's the Head Coach of the Miami Dolphins.
He's had lots and lots of years of experience working as an assistant under coaches like Marty Schottenheimer, Tom Coughlin, Bill Parcells and now Wade Phillips.
It will be interesting to watch the coaching style of Jason Garrett in years to come, because right now I'm clueless about it. All I've seen is the one year calling plays as an OC and what he's done on the field as a backup QB (favorite memory: Cowboys win over GB on Thanksgiving Day @ home when Red Ball threw some bombs to Alvin Harper, which led to a 300-yd + passing day... perhaps his personal best game as a pro).
But back to Sparano.
Now,one thing is true -- and I'll close with this -- JFE hit on something regarding Miami's Made Man Sparano...
Sparano was not flashy nor was he good at self-promotion. He just was one of the first to arrive and one of the last to leave, a stickler for detail, always pushing for better. And this Cowboys team is going to miss him, more than Owner Jones seems to believe. And that is too bad.
http://www.star-telegram.com/sports/...
I really hope that Jerry makes wise decisions from here on out. If we lose out on Jason Garrett on the heels of losing Tony Sparano, I will seriously begin worrying about the future of the Dallas Cowboys.
But then again, I always find something to worry about... so that'll be nothing new.
Garrett to Stay
Just heard on sports radio that Garrett is to stay in Big D

Here's ESPN report
Dallas head coach Wade Phillips has been informed that Jason Garrett will turn down head coaching opportunities with the Atlanta Falcons and Baltimore Ravens and remain as the offensive coordinator for the Cowboys, sources told ESPN's Ed Werder.
Sources told ESPN.com that Garrett, who spent several hours meeting with Atlanta officials earlier in the day, huddled with Dallas owner Jerry Jones on Wednesday night. Garrett met with the Ravens on Monday night and part of the day Tuesday before flying to Atlanta for a follow-up session.
The Cowboys could offer Garrett a substantial raise and the tacit promise that he will eventually succeed Phillips within the next couple years.
In 2004, Jones convinced both his coordinators at the time, Sean Payton on offense and Mike Zimmer on defense, to bypass head coaching opportunities and stay with the Cowboys. Payton had been offered the Oakland Raiders' head coaching position and Zimmer the job at the University of Nebraska.

Garrett Back!
ESPN is reporting he has officially turned down the Falcon and Ravens and has agreed to stay in Dallas
Hire Norm Chow
Nothing like stacking your staff with solid offensive minds. And Chow never had a chance to do anything with the lack of weapons the Titans had. RB position was juggled all year, no standout receivers or TE help, a line that kept VY dancing all season.
Chow was the scapegoat and could possibly help infuse some new ideas in Big-D.
Garrett Details
'ESPN's Ed Werder reports that Cowboys offensive coordinator Jason Garrett will remain with the team, rejecting a reported offer to coach the Ravens. (Others reporting the news at about the same time include Adam Schefter of NFL Network and WNST in Baltimore.)'
