Cowboys blog blurbs
The DMN and the Star-T have some interesting blurbs on their blogs today.
Owner Jerry Jones said the Cowboys will pickup Terrell Owens’ $3 million roster bonus in March, meaning the big-play wide receiver will return in 2008. Owens is signed through next season, which is the final year of a three-year, $25 million contract.
That’s not exactly news; there was no way they weren’t going to make that bonus payment. But the question is an extension. Do the Cowboys want to extend T.O.’s contract? Will T.O. ask for a new contract this offseason? This is where it gets tricky. T.O. hasn’t showed signs of slowing down, but you have to consider age with a WR no matter how much of a physical specimen he is, and T.O. is a physical marvel.
They also mention that Jerry will be talking to Terry Glenn soon about his status for next year.
Another blurb:
Spotted Cowboys scout Tom Ciskowski, now the lead man after Jeff Ireland is in Miami, keeping a close eye on the South cornerbacks. That position expects to be one of the Cowboys' draft needs.
Indeed. Everyone knows that last year I wanted Aaron Ross as the Cowboys draft pick. It couldn’t happen because the Giants snatched him up and played him a lot this year. Don’t believe that a rookie CB can’t be a valuable member of a defense in his first year, they can. I’m still on the CB bandwagon this offseason and I don’t care if help comes through free-agency or the draft. Just get help.
The DMN blog has a tantalizing blurb that says the rumor around the Senior Bowl is that the Cowboys are trying to trade Bobby Carpenter and Marcus Spears. I’m all for getting rid of Spears, he just doesn’t make enough plays. With Carpenter, I’m still a little iffy. I’ve seen him do some things when he plays, but the coaches just don’t seem to think he is worthy of time on our defense.

Is Aquib Talib on the South roster?
He's the one I hope falls to us with one of the first round choices.
CB bandwagon
nearly all of us are on that one. One of the few things everybody can agree on around here :D

Amen to that
I don't think there is anyone associated with the Dallas Cowboys from owner to fan that doesn't agree we need a CB.
I still dream of signing Asante Samuel of course. My mother once told me that wishes do come true....
guarantee Ciskowski was looking at McKelvin
among others obviously. I know some people like the kid from Kansas, but this kid from Troy really intrigues me.
Wouldn't mind having either one :)
I'm all for Spears
being traded, but Carpenter has value epecially if releasing Ayodele is in the near future.
I would think if this scenerio plays out we would be drafting a ILB somewhere in the later rounds for depth.

yeah, as long as Romo and T.O. are on the field
I like our offense a lot against pretty much any defense.
We just need
Either a healthy TG or another good receiver...
I would be shocked
if TO played without an extension, Rosenhaus doesn't believe in one year deals for veterans...and I wouldn't give him more than one more year on his current deal.
Receivers get old fast.

thats what T.O. has basically been playing under
the last two years as the inital contract T.O. signed in 2006 was really 3 one year deals essentially. It was done to give Jerry an out in case T.O. began mishaving. I trust a similar arrangement will made in any future contracts with him.
That's why he got the bonus
up front and 5 million in first year salary. to protect him in the first two years. I hope he does play on a one year deal this year and doesn't complain but all I'm saying is that would surprise me and if he does want an extension...it puts us in a tough spot.

I just can't see why Jones
doesn't structure any extension in the same fashion. He has to give T.O. some type of incentive to keep him from becoming a problem child again.
T.O. has the body to play another 3 years at the same high level he's playing at now. By that time we should have a young guy like Stanback develop into a true one receiver to take his place when he retires.
There was media speculation that JJ might
be looking at Roy Williams (the productive one with the Lions).Williams, TO, and Witten would be a handful to cover.
He's talanted, but also a china doll
just like with Glenn, he gets injured all the time. I'd rather have a WR that is more durable.
Looks like Glenn is done.

time to make
that trade with Detroit. Something will happen because it's obvious Glenn won't be back. We need another playmaker opposite TO.

What would he cost?
I think he should be worth our 2nd pick (factoring his free agency status), but they may go after our second first rounder... Is is worth it, being that he'll be expensive to retain after next year? Tough call....
Btw, I think Kevin Jones could be had for cheap as well. Maybe get him to replace Julias and save a draft pick for more pressing needs.

If he's accident prone, as Terry alludes to,
you may not want another potential IR candidate.
I just remember his incredible talent at UT, and some of his highlight reels at Deeetroit.
Keep 'em around
I'm inclined to keep Spears around to play out his rookie contract. We should be able to keep him at a lower cost for two more years under his five-year rookie contract. Spears is a marginal-to-average starter or a really good backup. He also has three years of experience. The combination of low cost/experience/average ability give him value. I would certainly declare his defensive end position open for competition and try to upgrade. Then Spears could be a solid backup at both DE spots and the #3 guy at nose tackle.
As for Carpenter, I would like to see him get some consistent playing time before cutting bait. Again, he isn’t highly compensated and he does add value with his special teams play.
Both of the above opinions are based on the Cowboys not being able to receive a third round or higher draft choice for either guy. If they can get someone to part with a high draft pick, then I’d probably trade them. But that doesn’t happen all that often in this league. Usually teams wind up parting with fifth and sixth round picks for players of their level.

Carpenter has been outstandings on special teams
play. But, you'd expect a lot more from a 1st-rounder.
First rounder
Yes, you do initially hope for and expect more from first round picks, but I think just about all of us have all given up hope that Spears and Carpenter will be true difference makers that you hope first round picks to be.
However, the round they were drafted in really is irrelevant at this point when determining whether to keep them, trade them or flat-out cut them.

Trade 'em
I think they know their potentials and don't see much more than a support role. And I guess they must see things about Carpenter they just DON'T like at all. So if we can get some decent picks, why not?
I like the idea of hording draft picks to fill needs if we want a realistic chance of getting a Samuels, then deal with our own upcoming expensive FA's, this year and beyond

Possible replacement for Bowles
A possible replacement for Bowles could be former Cowboys defensive back Dennis Thurman, who spent the last six years as secondary coach in Baltimore. Thurman was recently let go from the Ravens staff when the club fired head coach Brian Billick. Thurman played nine years in the NFL, including eight with the Cowboys from 1978-85.
Sorry, no link.
