Around SBN: Jeremy Lin's Game-Winner Was Incredible, Worth Remembering

Cowboys roster evaluation: TE

Dallas Cowboys tight end roster evaluation.

TE

Starter: Jason Witten – Here’s the thing about Jason Witten, as good as he was right out of the box when we drafted him, he’s only gotten better as the years have progressed. Witten has a reached a level of play where he is now being called the best all-around TE in the league by some anlaysts. That’s high praise indeed for our star TE but not wholly unwarranted. There may be other TE’s in the league who are as good or perhaps even a little better as receivers but you’d be hard-pressed to find a TE who can catch like Witten and also block like him. That wasn’t always the case, Witten’s blocking early in his career was sometimes suspect, but it’s a skill he’s worked on and has now mastered. I’ve watched many times on game film where Witten has taken on a defensive end and won the battle.

The fact that Witten can do it all from the TE position is nice but it his ability to get open in the passing game, especially over the middle, that has made him such a valuable weapon for the Cowboys. His ability to draw coverage to the middle of the field is part of the reason T.O. has such gaudy numbers with the Cowboys. Witten has terrific hands, runs great routes and almost always falls forward when being tackled. I just can’t say enough about what a fantastic football player Jason Witten truly is. And if that’s not enough for you, just go here to understand the true essence of Jason Witten.

Anthony Fasano – Fasano labors under the expectations of being a 2nd-round pick by Bill Parcells and comparisons to guys like Mark Bavaro who served the Tuna so well. Fasano does not possess those kinds of skills. Fasano is what I like to term a serviceable player who provides nice depth at a position. He can block well enough although I still think there is room for improvement in that part of his game. In the passing game he’s had some moments but not the overall consistency that would make you think he’s anything more than a backup. Of course, his drop in the Giants’ playoff game will be a lasting memory for many fans. Still, Fasano is a good player to have in order for Witten to get the occasional rest in a game.

Tony Curtis – All the guy does is catch touchdowns. That’s being overly-complimentary of the player, but he has produced a few good moments for the Cowboys and serves them well on special teams. He’s not a guy you think about a lot but he has performed well in the role the Cowboys ask of him.

Rodney Hannah – Hannah has the look of a TE, especially a pass-catching TE. He’s athletic, tall and showed flashes of skill at training camp before the past season. Right now, he’s all potential but if he can corral his physical gifts into an understanding of the position and a willingness to get physical, he might end up being more than a project. Only time will tell with this kid.

Selling Fasano short
He was a legitmate second rd pick. He has the size and speed and quickness to be a very good TE. Not as good as Witten, but then who is?
Too many people are letting that one critical drop affect them too much. Also, many wanted someone other then Fasano at that pick and that colors their opinion of him as well. Grizz, I think you are wrong there.

Why?

Fasano's shown nothing during his first two years to demonstrate that he can be a 'good' Tight end. There's nothing wrong with getting a capable backup for a guy who is arguably the best at his position with a second rounder, I don't think Grizz was slighting Fasano. I see the size, but not the speed or quickness you speak of.
If he can up his blocking, however, he could very easily justify that selection. As I said, he's not a bust as is.

Grizz-Off topic

When you had the blog on Typepad what service did you use? The basic or one of the upgraded layouts with more bells and whistles. I saw your old one. It did appear to basic compared to this layout. The diary really makes a blog I think. I haven't seen a layout like this yet. A great job by whoever designed this layout. Thanks

Good question

That was a couple of years ago but I think I just had the basic service but I can't be sure. I agree with you that having the diaries is a big advantage to using the Scoop platform which is the platform SB Nation uses. Allowing you guys to write your own stories makes this blog infinitely more interesting.

And for a little teaser. SB Nation is upgrading the platform in the very near future. It's going to have a brand-new look and feel with a lot more information readily available on the blog. I can't get into it too much yet, I have to wait for the official roll-out to occur. But it's going to be really cool. When it happens, it will be a shock to the system to all the regulars who've grown accustomed to the current layout and functionality, but believe me, once everybody gets used to it the amount of info and interaction will be mind-blowing. Stay tuned, as they say.

He's shown flashes
He's got it in him to be a much better player than he is, and he's still decent for a backup.  I bet we'd see him get a lot better faster if he got more gametime, but he's behind one of very best playing today.

I'm hoping his drop was just the kick in the rear he needed to step up a gear.

Absolutely

Best overall TE in the entire league.

Can anyone name another TE in the league that you would rather have on our team than Jason Witten?

TE

is definitely an area of real depth on our roster.

But I do keep seeing that Fasano drop in the end zone in my dreams. Usually sequenced right behind the Crayton drop....

I don't have a problem with Fasano...

Fasano is a serviceable backup.  Unfortunately we are too hard on him because he comes with "wasted 2nd round pick" stamped on his forehead.

I know that you meant that as a serious statement, Fargo... but that was just downright hilarious -- ROTFL!!!

Very good reason for picking Fasano

We WERE going to a full time two TE offense and we only had one real good one. Guys around here convienently forget that all  the scout services had Fasano as the #2 TE avaliable.
Now has he played up to that level- NO. BUT he has the potential, and he has done pretty well considering the limited oppurtunities he has had.
Yes he had that big drop; but Crayton had a lot more, and lets be honest so has TO.  Fasano has to show that he can be a real difference maker and so far he has not; but the potential is there. His 3rd year is coming up so we should know once and for all his ability in the next season.

I think most Cowboy

fans know the reason he was drafted at the time and why.  I think now, the pick would have been better served in other areas; hindsight is always 20-20.  Personally I think Curtis has shown more upside then Fasano.  All in all, Dallas has great depth at TE.

Jim Kleinsasser Clone?
Curtis is a pretty darn good pass-catcher, but his blocking will need to keep improving if he has hopes of being anything more than a reserve TE.

Fasano has a long ways to go, but he's shown that he's not afraid to block and I like his toughness.  Unfortunately he's a stiff when it comes to the passing game.  Reminds me a lot of Jim Kleinsasser, who was taken by the Vikings in the second round years ago.  Kleinsasser was 270# and had 4.65 speed, but he was too muscular and stiff to ever excel as a receiver.  With that said, Kleinsasser is an elite blocking TE and actually pancaked Ware on the Peterson TD at Texas Stadium in October.

No Doubt

Witten is the best TE in the league. His mix of blocking, athleticism, and pass catching ability go unrivaled. He could also be considered one of the best football players in the league, he's my personal favorite.

by Romo9 on Jan 30, 2008 5:18 PM CST reply actions

I think Fasano is a little better than

He's given credit for. I thought he played much better in his second year, blocking and pass catching, and didn't even know about his shoulder injury until after the season was over.

He'll never look great because of sharing the same position as ALL World Witten, but no one else will either.

Throw in Curtis as a reliable #3 who can be good on ST's and we have a solid group.

Yeah,
I think Fasano plyed much better in his second years. He really worked very hard!
