The plot thickens at Valley Ranch
Ah, the intrigue is back at Valley Ranch. Not that it ever truly went away but things just got kicked up a notch with the revelations in the latest article from Calvin Watkins. (BTW, kudos to Watkins for breaking this news).
We all know that the Cowboys were talking to defensive-guru Dom Capers about joining the staff in Dallas. The neat-and-tidy version had him coming in as the linebackers coach which was presumably the only spot left open. That never quite washed with me, Capers is a big name with a big-time reputation in NFL circles and it seemed unlikely that he would settle for being a mere position coach.
This is where the intrigue begins. Watkins recounts the sequence of events in his article.
Sources said Capers called Stewart once the Cowboys contacted him about a job.
Capers, who gave Stewart his first NFL job with the Houston Texans in 2002, asked the Cowboys' coordinator if Capers' presence on the staff would bother him.
A day later, sources said, Stewart told Capers he would be uncomfortable if the veteran coach joined the organization. Capers, according to sources, told Stewart he would pass on the opportunity to join the team.
When Capers informed the Cowboys of his decision, the club talked him into coming to Valley Ranch on Tuesday for an interview.
That’s a lot to digest. I guess I’ll start with Brian Stewart. I can’t really blame him for feeling uncomfortable with Capers being off staff if it was in a coordinator/consultant role instead of just the linebackers coach. One year in to the DC job and having a guy of Capers stature looking over your shoulder will make you uncomfortable. But, in the end, I want what’s best for the Cowboys and if you asked me who I would rather have running the defense, Stewart or Capers, well, that’s a no-brainer. Sorry Brian, but Dom Capers wins that argument hands-down.
Now you have to go further up the food-chain to speculate what’s happening there. Brian Stewart was Wade’s handpicked coordinator. So has Wade endorsed this deal to bring Capers in as a consultant/coordinator? Or is he just receiving marching orders from higher up? With the way the staff has been shaping up it’s beginning to look like a Garrett staff, not a Phillips staff. But Wade really doesn’t have a lot of leverage here, with Garrett in the wings and with the Cowboys disappointing exit from the playoffs, Wade is on unstable footing. He doesn’t have the clout to put his foot down and make a stand for Stewart and that’s assuming that he would want to. Does Wade feel that Capers would make this team better and afford it a better chance of winning big in 2008? If he does, then he would probably endorse the move because his own future as head coach is tied up in that scenario.
So that brings us to the big cheese, the guy who makes the rules. This maneuvering has Jerry Jones’ fingerprints all over it. From what I can see Jerry is putting together a staff that could just as easily function without Wade Phillips in the future. If you’re a fan of the Cowboys, this is a good thing for the long-term future of the franchise. But, the question is how this will affect the immediate future, meaning 2008. Is Wade Phillips comfortable with what’s going on around him? Will it influence the way he coaches this year? If things start going sour at any point during the season will there be a power struggle, a breaking of the team into factions?
For all these questions I have no real answer. But to me a few things are obvious, Jerry is calling the shots again in a way he hasn’t since the Tuna arrived on the scene in 2003. He’s preparing for an eventual future with Jason Garrett as head coach and is trying to surround him with quality coaching talent. That’s not to say that Jerry has forsaken 2008, all that all-star coaching talent could payoff in a big way next year. But it’s going to be a delicate balancing act out at Valley Ranch.
And where Brian Stewart fits into the equation if Dom Capers comes on board is anyone’s guess.

Whatchu Waiting for King... "Sign The Dom!"
Turn on the biz charm, talk to Stew, throw him some extra bones, and SEAL THIS DEAL NOW!!!
if Capers is
willing to sign the dotted lines regardless of what his title is, you get him signed. I don't care if Stewart is uncomfortable with the move. If Stewart is capable of getting the job done, then he should have no worries. Stewart sounds like someone who is afraid they might lose their job. This is professional football and results speak for themselves. With that said, I believe, Stewart is gone after this upcoming season no matter the results because I believe Phillips will "resign/retire" and we all know who will be where at that time. Capers will be Garret's DC when he takes over HC; better to be on the staff now, then later.

no problem here
so is dom coming?
i don't know how i feel about Stew not wanting the best people around him, regardless of who it is. kudos for being honest tho.
i want dom tho. maybe he can convince jerry we need another quality corner.
Stewart
is such a hypocrite. He wants competition when it comes to players, bring in more/better talent, etc...But, when it comes to him? He doesn't want a single guy there, someone who would at least push him and knowingly make him better...

Here is a different take
From JJT:
A year after Bill Parcells left the building, Jerry is completely out of control. He's running things like he did in the '90s once Jimmy Johnson left – and we know what a disaster that became.
It's one of the reasons the Cowboys haven't won a playoff game in 11 years and spent three seasons as one of the NFL's worst teams.
Parcells was hardly perfect, but at least when he ruled the club's Valley Ranch training complex, everyone from the trainers to secretaries to players knew who was in charge. These days, Jerry is running the show, and Garrett has more input than Phillips.
Those who don't learn from history are doomed to repeat it. The end is near.

Well
we all know that JJT is an idiot.

It's about the big picture.
To me, it's all about getting the smartest football people out at Valley Ranch as they possibly can. Since JJ has always insisted on being the GM, and will continue in that role until he's pushing daisies, hiring guys like Campo, Houck, and Capers can only be a good thing. These guys will help in deciding which free agents to pursue, which rookies to draft, and not to mention coaching them up.
Stewart also needs to look at the big picture. He's still a very young guy. Unless he thinks he knows every single thing about the 3-4 defense, it would be foolish for him not to welcome Capers with open arms. If Capers would improve the defense as a defensive consultant, that makes Stewart look better as a defensive coordinator. Coordinators on teams that win get promoted to head coaches. Meanwhile, Stewart will soak up more knowledge by being around Capers, which helps him if Capers only hangs around here for a season or two.
It does appear that JJ is back to his old tricks, but at least he's filling in the blanks with quality coaches who can assist him with personnel decisions.
As for the team possibly breaking into factions out there if thinks go sour, yes, I can see it happening. But losing nearly always causes that, especially on teams where the expectations are as high as they are with this team.
JUST WIN. It solves a lot. If Capers is hired, they have an excellent free agent crop, a decent draft, make a couple of deft trades, and win the Super Bowl next season, Brain Steward's career will remain on track. But if it all blows up, his potential will continue to be questioned.
And Grizz, I've been a lurker to your site since just before last year's training camp. I visit every day several times and am in awe at your dedication to our team. Thanks for all you do. This is my first post, but certainly not my last.

Grizz...
My fear is that with Jerry so clearly pulling the strings, how will Wade enforce discipline...I mean next year if he asks all the players to sign a pledge not make penalties, they might not feel like the have to.
And as we know, without players signing a petition not to commit dumb penalties, you can't win in the playoffs.
That sounds good...
...but ask Washington about having lots of big-name coaches around. Winning comes down to the players playing and when they buy into what the coach is selling things go well.
But the players always know what is going on and who is in charge and who has the power and they know when a coach is on loose footing and it effects their performance...no doubt about it. That's why teams never go into a season with a coach in the last year of a contract.
Wade is having his authority severely undercut by JJ hiring the coaches, Garrett making as much as him (or very close to it), a big name defensive guru coming in (possibly). While it seems like a good idea and it feels good to do things like hire Capers, the law of unintended consequences always makes itself known in the final result.

Jerry and Chess
Good insight by Dave. My reaction to the JJT article on this topic 2 days back was that JJT was just stirring up trouble and attempting to surface a familiar refrain about Jerry going crazy.
I'll be the first to admit that Jerry makes me awfully nervous when he reaches for personnel but I am feeling much better about his assessment.
- That Wade is a short timer and he needs to think big picture.
- That while acceptable and likeable, Stewart, Rodgers and Bowles are still young coaches that are/were not getting the most of our defense.
- That Capers is a great move along with an egoless Campo and as Dave points out, Stewart and Wade could leave tomorrow and we'd be in very solid shape with Capers aboard just needing to find a LB coach.
While not blaming Stewart for feeling "nervous," I cannot help but wonder something that many of us may feel: Why not cut Wade and Stewart loose now so that can catch on somewhere else? After all Garrett will have Capers to lead the D and Sherman to assist him with the offense. Just wondering why hold off when this may be better for the club. Further, is anyone really enamoured with Wade? Why delay? Coaching, no? Losing someone who is leading a dominating defense, no? Someone that appears to be able to win big games, no? What we have is a good guy and capable coach who does decent to good things. Why would the Cowboys settle for that?
by JMan on Jan 31, 2008 12:40 PM CST reply actions
I have to agree, I thought Wade was history
after the loss. Was really surprised Jones kept to his word and didn't fire Wade when everyone knows that he wants Garrett to be the next HC.
Its all part of Jerrys plan
We have a strong to dominating 2008,make a strong push for a super bowl CHAMPIONSHIP.....Wade rides off into the sunset,JG gets annointed as the next great Dallas cowboys head coach...Just in time to open the NEW STADIUM...with a NEW COACH...Oh yeah, and we've got home field advantage in 2011 super bowl,....guys trust me....its all part of Jerrys Plan!
The bigger picture...
Totally agree with you Steve, but I think we're focusing on the wrong part of this...
This coaching staff, for all it's flaws, got us to a 13-3 season. If you had told me two years ago that was in the cards, I would have given you a funny look. This team has straddled mediocrity for so long that it's driven me crazy at times. Now, at 13-3? That's not a good season, guys, that's a great one. That means that this team is ready to compete ... not for a playoff spot, not for the division title, but for Lombardi Trophy #6. And it was last year's staff that got us there.
I realize the wounds from the playoff loss still sting (and the Jints in the SB are the salt), but not is not the time to pull the panic alarm. We don't need a 2007 Cowboys 2.0. We don't need a redux. We need last year's team to execute.
Maybe new coaches would help in the long run ... but like Grizz said, what does it mean now? Do we really want a frustrated DC coaching our staff? No. And we REALLY don't need Wade feeling like he doesn't control this team anymore. We don't need or want a "lame duck" coach in 2008.
What happens if this team misses its window? If the Cowboys falter in 2008 because of internal issues? Sure, we may have a better staff in the long run, but picture this for 2009 and beyond ... T.O. leaves, Newman and MBIII leave for greener pastures and Henry gets injured AGAIN with no viable backup to take his place. The team begins losing a couple more games every year. The atmosphere changes. It goes from "how can we improve" to "who can we blame." Romo labeled a playoff bust. Players lack confidence in the coaching staff. Playoffs become a distant memory. More or less, we become the Redskins.
Yeah, that's a pretty bleak scenario, and it'd have to be the Perfect Storm for all that to go wrong. But its still a possibility if we start making drastic changes to our staff now.
And if we miss this window for another SB, when we're so ... darned ... close ... I just don't know what I'll do.
its also the same coaching staff
that failed to have the team playing at a high level in the playoffs, so really the 13-3 means nothing when you lose your first game in the playoffs.
Look, Jerry didn't really want to make changes in the coaching staff, he was forced into doing so because his current staff left for Miami, so Jerry had to hire new coaches whether they were needed or not.
If you have to hire new coaches, then bring in the best, most experienced guys that are available, and ones that have ties to Garrett since he's going to take over sooner or later.
I disagree...
...back your current HC as much as possible. And not just with words.
by boysandbosox on Jan 31, 2008 4:12 PM CST up reply actions
would you rather
Jerry hire anybody's or guys that actually have a proven track record. Wade knew when he came here it was going to be short-lived, no matter the result. If Jerry has the opportunity to fill the staff with successor's, he will.
by nonotmenever on Jan 31, 2008 4:26 PM CST up reply actions
No1, you make some points
And the picture you've painted is pretty bleak. And Terry's point below is absolutely right. The staff got raided, JJ is just trying to find the most experienced guys he can. The current defensive staff couldn't solve Roy Williams' coverage issues, didn't really give Carpenter a legit chance (IMO), and let Spears play WAY too much. The defense was better than last year, but faded against the run late in the season. Since JJ's hand was forced after Big Bill sliced and diced the staff, his only choice - if he wanted to improve the team - was to hunt down the best people he could. I know Capers isn't signed yet, but assuming he will be, it will only help. Getting new eyes to review how this past season went, to evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of the current crop of players, to figure out what yet is needed to make this defense into a dominating unit, is exactly what should happen. If the only guy on the team who doesn't like it is Stewart, then so be it.
As for Wade, we'll NEVER know whether he likes it or not. The man spent the entire season denying even the most obvious developments (Huh? Romo hurt his thumb?). Wade is about one thing: his legacy as a head coach. He's already told us what a great defensive coordinator he's been throughout his career. Winning playoff games is his final frontier. He will welcome Capers with open arms because Capers can play Mr. Spock and actually guide the Enterprise through the Neutral Zone while steadily blowing up Romulans along the way.

Great points SteveC
We'd be all over the team if they failed to pick up talented free agents or draft who we thought were the best palyers on the board.
The current staff was good but not great and the difference in talent between teams is so small that coaching - head and assistant - is the key to consistent winning. The Giants played much better with far less talent in their secondary. There is something missing in the coaching of this defense and if mo' bettuh coaching can help fix that, bring them on...
Jerry do what's right
and fire Wade today. Its not fair for you to hand pick your HC asst. If your going to hold your HC accountable you must give him the opportunity to bring in his guys. If your not willing to do that get rid of him and bring someone else in (Garrett). With these types of moves,it only shows that Wade will not have a say in FA or the Draft. I think Jerry already trusts Garrett more than Wade. Let him go now. Wade deserves better and so do the Fans. There will be problems down the road. The team will stop respecting Wade as soon as trouble arises. I can see the finger pointing now. Don't let this continue Jerry I'm losing respect for you!!!! The coaching moves are good but you put a knife in your HC back. This will keep us from reaching our goal for next year (Super Bowl)and while your at it let Stewart go with him and lets move forward.
How do we even have a clue
That Wade is not on board with these proceedings?
Show my something, anywhere, that is proof that Wade is unhappy with the people coming in to coach on his staff.
In fact, I read that when Dom Capers was brought in to interview, he was seen leaving in the presence of Coach Wade!
Wade has been around this league for a very long time now, and I am sure that he knows his window for winning a Super Bowl, hell even a playoff game, is closing rapidly. He is also aware that surrounding himself with some of the brightest minds in football, when managed well, can be one of the smartest moves he'll make yet. There has yet to be any concrete proof of any dissension from Wade, and it seems the only person unhappy is Brian Stewart, and that is based purely on speculation and "anonymous sources." Besides, Capers has not even been hired yet.
Lets wait and see IF he is hired, and in what capacity and salary, to jump all over Jerry, the Dallas Cowboys fans' favorite scapegoat. And forget anything JJT says, speculates or even writes about this matter, because it is all pure opinion, and it is driven by his desire to constantly stand out, stir up controversy and sell papers.
And after further review
there is nothing in the NFL rule book about a GM making the hiring decisions for anyone on the team or coaching staff.
To take it a step further, I'd be disappointed if Jones were not planning for the future and not just next season. That's why he locked up Garrett and has pursued - and is paying for - better coaching talent. You can say that he'll be second guessed if this doesn't work, but really he's second guessed no matter what he does. Colon Cowturd was hammering Jones for letting all the coaching talent go to Miami and now he's hammering Jones for hiring the BCA (Best Coach Available). If they are going to hate on you anyway, might as well do it your way...
BSPN's Turdman Keeps Talkin' Sh__...
... out of both holes that it's amazing how many of his listeners eat up that fecal matter without even thinking twice.
He's got one of the biggest egos yet he doesn't do his homework on half the stuff he spouts out... which is like 99.9 percent opinion.
I don't need JJT
Telling me anything, I can see it with my own eyes. A previous report discussed how wade wanted to bring in a LB coach he worked with in San Deigo, another report talked of how Wade wanted a different Offensive line coach than Houck. All the coaching moves made so far have not included any of Wade's guys. Of course Wade is going to say how happy he is with the moves. He would be a fool not to. Sometimes you have to read the writing on the wall and not wait for the crap to hit the fan. Make the move now, we are to close to a Super Bowl to let chemistry be a problem. Why blow a year. If Capers comes on Board will you still say this is Wade's Defense? We already know it's not his offense.
Jerry was Stunned
Do you recall Jerry's comment at the end of the one and done game?
Do you think our defense played really well from December onward? Granted they made a couple nice stands, and special teams wreaked, but overall wasn't the defense soft on the pass?
Was our passing yards allowed per game a positive or a negative? Who should get the blame Wade or Brian Stewart?
Do you as fans want to see some improvement- player as well as coaching?
I'm still po'd about that Giants game.....
by Dorsett33 on Jan 31, 2008 5:36 PM CST reply actions
Jim Rome had this quip on the Cowboys coaches
Has any team ever had its present head coach, its future head coach, its former head coach and an owner/GM who actually thinks he's the coach on staff at the same time?
Capers is a good coach, good man, but....
I don't see how adding Capers to the staff could be anything but positive from a coaching perspective. However, the chemistry of the staff, as explained in the article, should also be a consideration, and I give Capers great credit for calling Brian Stewart to discuss it.
I feel that Wade is a great coach and is the right man to lead this team. I just hope he is being allowed to do that. Dave said, "Jerry is putting together a staff that could just as easily function without Wade Phillips in the future. If you’re a fan of the Cowboys, this is a good thing for the long-term future of the franchise." While Jerry has the best intentions, I have problems with a staff that he puts together unless the head coach, Wade, has asked for the people Jerry is recruiting. While Wade is being strongly criticized for losing to the Giants, the Green Bay staff isn't receiving the same treatment from its fans. The Giants are a good team, and they might be a thorn in our side for years. While none of us would like to believe it, we may have lost to a better team. I would like to see this staff assembled by Wade Phillips, period. His knowledge of the coaching abilities of the candidates is light years beyond that of Jerry Jones.

We may want to look at this
from yet another angle.
Regarding Stewart's 'reluctance' to add Capers to the staff, I really don't think it's becuase he doesn't want the best people around him or is afraid of the competition.
We have to remember:
A) Capers gave Stewart his first opportunity to coach in the NFL.
B) As has been pointed out, Capers is a WELL-established, WELL-respected coaching veteran. Stewart? Not so much, at least not yet and certainly not as much as Capers.
Stewart's reluctance here is borne out of respect, not insecurity. The first time Capers doesn't have his LBs lined up correctly (it will happen, he's not infallible), do you think Stewart is going to be comfortable calling him on the carpet in loud fashion? I highly doubt it. In this particular instance, I don't think it's fair or accurate to deem Stewart as weak or insecure for not wanting Capers on the staff. In short, he simply respects Capers too much to holler at him. To properly relate, I think we'd have to imagine what it would be like to be the boss of our father or mentor. It's just not a comfortable situation.
I'm a manager who manages a workforce in which 80% of the employess are older than I, so perhaps I'm more acutely aware of this dynamic than most.
IMO, this is a problem of JJ's making. To put Stewart in this position is wrong. "Lifer" bosses such as JJ often lose touch with what it was like to be the young boss trying to garner respect. They've become so accustomed to the absolute power gained from bossing those around them they think everyone else can do the same no matter the circumstances.
So far JJ's retro-fitted plan for '09 has netted us a lame-duck HC and a D coordinator who'll feel extremely awkward in '08...a reminder of why I cringe at JJ the GM.
Having said allll that...
As a fan I want the best coaches on the Cowboys' staff. That means I too want Capers on the staff, as I think he's a defensive whizz who possesses a ton of defensive knowledge.
Buuuut, if it's gonna detract from our current coordinator's ability to coordinate the defense, then I hope the Boys pass on him for reasons related to the 'bigger picture.'
I guess what I really want is for JJ to stop ignoring the elephant in the room that is his all-too-transparent plans for '09. While I do think there is something to be said for discretion, I think in this particular instance it would be better for JJ to jump in with both feet in terms of his commitment to Garrett as the head coach.
JJ may be getting the hang of the gm job..
he used to focus on the best players, now i think he's seen what solid coaching can do and that its to important, now he wants all the best coaches and players...i say get them all...but keep wade happy..because wade is like yoda and garrett is like young skywalker so i think capers is more like obe-one than spock, and campo would be han solo and houck would be cwebacka, stewart is lando calrissian, that leaves jones as jabba the hut.
but i don't think he's giving up on 2008 and i'm not to sure he wont bring wade back if they have another great year..
