It's official - Old Jerry is now back in the building!

http://www.dallasnews.com/sharedcont...

Now tell me Jerry ain't running the show without giving two ***** what Wade wants.

Star-divide

Now tell me Jerry ain't running the show without giving two ***** what Wade wants.

This kid Stewart came here as Wade's hand picked disciple, but he did not blow anyone out of the water as the D coordinator last season.

Now I thought Stewart would still be here as the D cor as long as Wade was around, but this makes a whole lot more sense than Capers coming in as the LB coach. Capers is just too big of an 'NFL player'. Why would Stewart want to be the D Cor and have Wade running things while Capers is #2 as a consultant?

I hope he just takes the D cor job because I beleive he can get more out of the defense. But then again it makes you wonder about Capers having to answer to Wade who was really the 'defensive mastermind' for this team anyway. Garrett runs the O, Capers runs the D and Wade helps out around the house?

Jerry sure is creating a volatile situation out at the Ranch these days. IMO, it's looking more and more like he is doing all he can to create a situation where Wade can quit ASAP and Jerry can't get blamed for firing him.

If I am Wade right now I feel like an overnight security guard when I used to be the sherriff.

Not to say it can't work next season, but man if it starts off bad things will get seriously ugly for poor Wade in a New York minute.

Never a dull moment in Cowboys Nation, never ever ever ever is there a dull moment with this team.

there is no question Jerry is setting up

a plan for Garrett to take over in 2009 if not sooner. I'm actually a little surprised Jerry didn't fire Wade right after that Giants loss debacle and hire Garrett as HC for this upcoming season.

The end is near for Wade and anyone should obviously see the handwriting on the wall, including Wade.

It's a shame

Because Wade's a good coach who's never gotten a fair chanec. In every situation he's been seen as a bridge to a more attractive (in more ways than one, teehee) coach down the road. Jerry's got his mind made up, though. ANd I can't completely say I blame him for these moves if he does believe that Garrett is going to be a great HC someday.

If that's the case....

...I'm fearful that 2008 is going to be a lost season.  2009 and beyond we go forth with an inexperienced HC that showed his inability to make second half adjustments down the stretch.  Our window of opportunity with the talent that we have isn't going to stay open forever.

I don't think we can be overly critical of Brian Stewart as the DC.  We all know it was Wade's defense and Stewart was just sending in the signals.  Besides, it was our offense that sputtered at Texas Stadium 3 weeks ago.....otherwise we might be 4 days away from watching our Cowboys play in the Super Bowl.

plain and simple...Stewart is a nobody...

From what I took from the article...Wade is totally on board with hiring Capers...To sort of help out the young Stewart...If Stewart is uncomfortable, He should be, cuz I don't think he got the most out of the defense. Capers is a somebody...Somebody I would feel much more comfortable running the Defensive.Somebody I'm sure would devise a much better plan to disguise our weaknesses and to elevate our pressure on passing downs...It's a fact that Capers is a dynamic defensive mastermind....even more so than Wade in some regards. Who cares if Stewarts feelings are hurt...I don't care...If you all want to contend this is Jerry's doing, and that Jerry interviewed him without Wade totally on board...you really need to get your heads out of the sand...Wade wants this guy...Wade wanted Campo...Wade is hiring the coaches here....Garrett will not be the head coach anytime soon..He is not ready, and he needs at least two more years of perfecting his craft....It was quite obvious over the last month of the season he didn't have the answers...I am totally on board with signing Capers on as an Assistant Head Coach-Defense Consultant. The more masterminds the better...

What??

"A day later, sources said, Stewart told Capers he would be uncomfortable if the veteran coach joined the organization. Capers, according to sources, told Stewart he would pass on the opportunity to join the team."

Talk about an insecure person. If he can't handle the pressue then he needs to be fired on the spot. I don't  want that kind of person anywhere near my team...

Interesting

that Dom Capers was reportedly the person that Garrett went to the Ravens with as the guy that would be his defensive coordinator. Kinda  interesting that would now be on our staff.

First to six!!!

Brian sees the writing on the wall...

That's the only reason he could legitimately have for not wanting Dom Capers on staff. I can't imagine him just being "intimidated" by the guy that gave him his first shot. If anything, wouldn't he want to return the favor and get the guy a job on staff? Sorry Brian, anything to make this defense and team better as a whole needs to be done. And if you're not on board with bringing in another well-versed 3-4 coach, you gotta get over it. Dom Capers is a top-notch assistant in this league, and if Wade is on board and ready to add this guy to the staff, get it done.

Brian Stewart should have next to no say in the hiring of coaches to this staff.

Phillips and Stewart are lame duck coaches

and they know it. Jerry is just itching to promote Garrett as HC and will do it as soon as the opportunity presents itself, whether it be an awful start to the 2008 season or another disappointing playoff loss.

I think the only way Phillips has a prayer of being HC next season is to win the SB and I really think he retires if that happens.

I think that Phillips is really good
At managing people, and pointing them in a direction to succeed.  The problem that happened this season, was we had a first time Offensive Coor. AND and first time Def. Coor, albeit under Wade as the supposed Defensive Guru.  With his track record, it seems Wade is very good at creating a healthy environment and making players and coaches happy, with promotes a winning formula.  The man didn't get to 13-3 without doind SOMETHING right.  That being said, its obvious that he lacks whatever it is that needs to be done to get the team over that hump and charge hard towards the playoffs.  That is evidenced in the fact that he never has won a playoff game as a HC.

Bringing Capers in here is a GENIUS move.  Genius.  I don't care if Stewart's feelings are hurt or not.  He should be grateful for the chance to work with a great defensive mind, and be on track to learn more and more.  Plus that only ups his chances of coaching on a Super Bowl winning team.  But the minute that his feelings get hurt and he gets defensive and is threatened by the meer presence of Capers, that is when I no longer think he needs to part of the organization.  The point about football is WINNING, and sometimes you have to make sacrifices to be part of the process, especially after having such a tumultous first year as DC.

You find out life's this game of inches, so is football. Because in either game - life or football - the margin for error is so small.

Phillips was a part of our success this year

however I think our overall talent, Romo becoming better and Garrett as OC contributed more to the 13-3 record. Parcells gameplans were far too conservative, Jason allowed Romo to open up the offense much more and used T.O. much better.

oh god no....

please jerry...you were doing so well....don't start making all the decisions again...listen to reason...listen to your committees....your scouts...your coaches...don't pick puppets....don't live in a bubble....just. fight. the. urge.

I really don't think thats what he's doing

I think he's attempting to make the transition to Garrett much easier when it eventually happens. Its better to have all the coaches in place now for when Garrett takes over, then to attempt to go after them in the future.

Jerry is future planning right now and I don't think he really cares how this affects Phillips because he's only a transition coach anyway. Jerry is looking to the future with opening of his new stadium in 2009 and I can't blame him for that.

It's called succession planning

And since JJ has done it already for WP with Redball, it's certainly appropriate for the DC position. There's a lot of validity to these comments which are backdrops to the larger picture:

  • Wade Phillips did contribute positively to this team, created an atmosphere to succeed by unleashing talent, letting players play. But his strength is more as a strategist(schemes and game plans), and a motivator. I still see the lack of game-time adjustments as his biggest flaw.

I'm actually impressed he's letting the Capers courtship play out the way it is - think there will be a Camp Cupcake next summer with him on board ?

  • Jason Garret showed he was a first-year OC in several instances, but no one is doubting his ability to learn
  • Brian Stewart's D did not lose the Giant game, and if the Boys win that, all this angst is greatly diminished. However, what is his upside, other than being a WP protege ?

I'm somewhat surprised the weakest unit of the team - special teams hasn't gotten more immediate attention, but that doesn't get headlines - so now we're back to JJ. While I do believe all these changes will make for a better staff, the uncertainty it causes could go either way - coaching scared or going all out ? All I know is none of my bosses ever cared how secure I felt, so I have no problem with anyone being treated the same way. It's all about results.

Kinda ironic that you state

it's looking more and more like he is doing all he can to create a situation where Wade can quit ASAP and Jerry can't get blamed for firing him.

Hell Jerry fired the greatest coach EVER....No not talkin' bout switzer this time....on the day the sale of the team was finalized...you think jerry gives rats you know what....if he ruffles Wades feathers????

This is business, and jerry is the master, when it comes to business.

Jerry once said he'd never have a

aikman/walsh situation again where he drafted two first round qb's.  He said it was too uncomfortable for everyone.  Load of BS.  Its one thing to succession plan in case of losing someone, this is a plan to cover your bases before you fire someone.  I know its business but the best do it with a little dignity.

by BigE on Jan 31, 2008 3:23 PM CST reply actions

wow..

maybe they are just trying to put together the best team they can, i know that sounds way out there but maybe the want to win...and parcells left this team with the #4 offence so i dont see garrett as a mastermind. Jones also said a while ago that he did'nt give away the team to get garrett and he wasn't going too to keep him, so i think he knows its going to take a few years before garrett is ready (if) he stays around to get the job...
