Capers not coming to Dallas, Cowboys set to hire another assistant
The bad news is that Dom Capers has removed his name for consideration for any type of coaching position with the Dallas Cowboys. Capers didn’t give a reason and directed inquiries to Valley Ranch.
The good news is it appears that the Cowboys have finally finished filling out their staff after the Tuna raid early in the offseason. Yesterday I posted that they might add another assistant for the secondary and today they will (according to a source). But it’s not Dennis Thurman who had been rumored to be the guy; instead, it’s Brett Maxie. Interestingly enough, he was coaching safeties in Miami until he got fired this year. The Star-T has the sources:
According to a source, the Cowboys are on the brink of making another addition to their staff: former Dolphins secondary coach Brett Maxie.
Maxie interviewed at Valley Ranch on Friday and was offered a position working with Dave Campo in the secondary, splitting cornerback and safety coaching duties.
Hat tip to Deke for posting the news in this diary.

T.O. had a fine day in the Pro Bowl yesterday after a few early drops (it wasn't like we hadn’t seen that before). But in the end he was edged out by Adrian Peterson for the MVP award and a shiny new Caddy. You can read about the Pro Bowl here or here.

I thought all the Cowboys showed well
at the pro bowl. Ware had the one fumble on the return, but other than that, they all played really well. Ellis looked good in coverage which kind of surprised me.
one can hardly blame Ware
He's not exactly used to returning kicks!! Tried to get a little too fancy.. but it added to the entertainment value of the game ;)
T.O. Pro Bowl Coverage
Here's a story from the Honolulu Star-Bulletin on T.O. being the "next most valuable for NFC."
Also, this sports notebook piece quotes Witten as saying his cross-field lateral pass catch on the kickoff return was not a planned play. I thought it was, they executed it so well.
I wouldn't be surprised
to see the bears try that next year. The pro bowl is an anomaly with all the non-special teams players covering returns, but still, I would think some teams might tend to overplay Hester anyway because he is such a threat, and cluster around him leaving the other side of the field open. Coaches might be wise to remind their players of this play and watch out for it.
superbowl skills contest
hi there,
does anyone know about something like a skills contest before the Pro bowl ? I read somewhere on the web that Tony Romo won it, but I can't find any articles about it? thanks
I know Romo won the QB accuracy challenge in 2007
but I haven't read or seen anything about this years skills competition.
Just heard
that Parcells cut Marty Booker, with a host of other players, but Booker is good for us cause he could be that veteran reciever we bring in if we are not able to pick one up in a trade (ie: Roy W. in Detroit) also heard the other day that the Bears are going to let Bernard Berrian test the market, he is another we should keep an eye on.

Jeff Ireland is the GM
and has final say on players, not bill parcells
Thanks Deke?
Hey I got a beautiful piece of swamp land to sell you in New Jersey if you wanna believe that too. I'm just repeating the report I'm hearing on the radio where they said Parcells buddy, not to mention anyone and everyone who discusses the Dolphins here, on TV, and Radio they always start w/Parcelss not Ireland

you might need that land
because Ireland was hired as the GM, not Bill, who is the VP of football operation. Ireland isn't the marque name, thats why Miami TV and radio use his name, but the fact is, Ireland has final say on players, Ed Werder stated Ireland has it in his contract...
Not quite Deke
Ireland is definitely not running the show by himself in Miami:
"The situation that we're in is that Bill does oversee everything," Ireland said. "But yet I am the GM and we have a head coach, so there is going to be a triangle of communication involved here.
"I can't say that Bill will have the final say on everything, because we communicate so well. That's why Tony's in the position that he's in and that's why Bill brought me here [to Mobile] -- because we'll communicate and make decisions together."

I see the Panthers released Wahle
Wonder what happened there? Says it's for cap space in the article, but I wonder if he's healthy.
