The New England Patriots act fast. Zach Thomas paid them a visit and they offered him a contract.
The Patriots offered a contract to former Dolphins linebacker Zach Thomas on Monday, reports NFL Network's Adam Schefter.
Thomas and his agent, Drew Rosenhaus, visited New England on Monday and will continue negotiations with the team. Thomas is scheduled to visit with the New Orleans Saints on Tuesday.
And he will visit with the Cowboys after the Saints. Speculation is that the Patriots offered something close to the minimum for a vet and that his agent Drew Rosenhaus is looking for a multi-year deal with guaranteed money.
It is unclear what type of deal the Patriots offered but obviously it was not one either Thomas or Rosenhaus were immediately eager to sign. It is possible the Patriots offered a deal that pays the veteran minimum of $830,000 for 2008 with bonuses tied to play-time and other incentive categories.

Rosenhaus confirmed in his text message that Thomas will continue his impromptu free-agent tour today when he visits the New Orleans Saints. The agent also is scheduled to speak with the Dallas Cowboys tomorrow...

Calvin Watkins looks at the offensive line. He writes this:
If the price for Adams is too high for the Cowboys, Pat McQuistan starts at left tackle.
I disagree; I would bet money that if Flozell isn’t here that Doug Free will start at LT. He’s already a better tackle than McQ from my observations. Of course, Jerry could still move Bigg Davis there; we can only pray that doesn’t happen. Meanwhile, Nick Eatman is still peddling the idea of Marc Colombo moving over there if Flozell leaves. Well, the article is actually more about Colombo the player, but he does bring the idea up with Colombo who says he would do it but that the Cowboys need to re-sign Flozell.

multi year contract with guaranteed money???
wow, thats complete lunacy for a 35 year old LB with a history of concussions. Any GM that offers him that needs their head examined. Rosenhaus needs to get back to reality.
Regarding our future LT in case Flo bolts, I totally agree with Grizz, McQuistan will never beat out Free. I think he'll be a great career backup at the very least, but I don't see him starting anytime soon.

What I Find Amazing
The very fact they swooped on Thomas so fast tells me that the old guy has something left in the tank. He's a ball player!!! End of story. Yes, he's a little slower than his prime years, yes he had some concussions this past year. But the guy has declared himself 100% ready to go.
There have been a bunch of people on this blog who say, "He doesn't fit in a 3-4! He's a 4-3 linebacker!" Well how come the Pats think he's okay for their 3-4 but many Cowboy fans think he's not right for ours?
Jimmy Johnson had one PRIMARY requirement of his players. Can they PLAY? Zack Thomas can play. Still. And while I wouldn't want the Cowboys to throw down a 3 year contract, I'd sure be in favor of them signing him to a 2 year deal, with a option for a third, just to stretch the signing bonus out.
This defense lacks the same ingrediants the Mavs lack: toughness and leadership. The Mavs will fix that problem today by bringing in a 35 year old who is also past his prime but can still play. The Cowboys can do the same thing with Zack. No, he isn't an every down player. But what linebacker is? Bring on his hunger for a championship, add his toughness, his attitude, his will to fight every single second he is on the field.
We remarked all season about the emotional lift MBII brought every time he replaced JuJones. Well, we need somebody like that on defense.
Zack Thomas is that somebody!

I like Free over McQ
If Flozell thinks he's getting a big long term contract at 33 from Dallas, then its time to move on and let him go and wait for the compensatory pick, I think that should be a third round pick.
I realy like Free, he has great footwork, its too bad he injured his knee in preseason, would of been nice to see him with some more game action.
I like McQuistan as the swing tackle, I know there has been some talk of moving him to guard, but I think that would be a mistake. I dont like moving players from one position to another constantly, especially a seventh round pick in McQuistan

+1...
...and McQ might be our Plan B at RT if we can't lock up Colombo after this season, as I don't expect Marten to contribute in '08, '09 or ever for that matter.
