Exit stage left.
Things are looking more and more like Flozell Adams wont be resigned.
Cowboys owner/GM Jerry Jones hasn't closed the door on anything. But it sure sounded today like the team and Flozell Adams aren't approaching a contract extension, with Flo due to hit the market on Thursday at 11 p.m.
Complicating matters is the fact that Flo fired his agent, Roosevelt Barnes, last week and replaced him with Jordan Woy.
http://cowboysblog.dallasnews.com/ar...
I wouldn't mind Flozell being resigned to a home town discount cap friendly contract, but at some point you have to move on and fill that spot with a cap friendly younger player, but with each passing day, its looking more and more like Flozell is leaving.

thats tough
idk how i really feel about this. i think we need to keep flo because i doubt doug free will be able to fill that space the way flo did.. and if we cant get production from that LT spot it'll be a looonng season in '08
i agree, but
I think we need to move on. We have to see what this young talent can do sometime, and right now we don't have a ton of cap space

I agree plus
this years draft is very deep at OT....8 or nine to be taken in the 1st two rounds
I diagree...Throw 'em to the wolves...
I'll have to admit, I didn't see Flo in our plans...If we can get him signed and still shore up our secondary somehow, so be it...
But I think it's time..It's time to start weeding out very expensive players on the wrong side of 30...Flo, Henry, Glenn, Fergie would all be gone at the end of this season......regardless!! Do it now...I say. that's over $ 22,000,000 right there on 4 over the hill, degenerating talents.
I WANT to see our young guys contribute..sure, there may be a few whiffs i imagine....but I don't think he's going to be a matador either..The key for a LT is to provide 3-5 seconds of resistance. If your 6'6" 315lbs....more times than not, your going to be able to position yourself in front of someone for 3-5 seconds...

If the Answer to Flo Isn't on the Current Roster
The Cowboys think this year's draft to be the deepest in OTs in many years.
LT is a critical position, it's not the end of the world if you don't have an all-pro there. Position coaching (read Houk, Hudson) and game-planning (don't overuse the seven step drop on pass plays) can get around it.
Peyton Manning's blindside was protected by a rookie second rounder last year, and he did fine when he was healthy.
So in a word, I agree, too.
Hey kindablue!
Welcome back, haven't heard from you in a while.

Wasn't Torrin Tucker 6'6" 315#
Mobility and long arms are more important then Height and Weight (at least in the pass game).
good point
if size was the only factor, then there would be many, many great LTs which is simply not he case.
Having dancer's feet are more imortant IMO.
true..missed my point...
I'm throwing numbers out there...pick whatever numbers you want...point being. we don't need a 7-9 million dollar LT to succeed.
Sure didn't slow the Colts or Chargers down this past season.
The key for a LT is to provide 3-5 seconds of resistance.
If you can do that at $400,000 per year....welcome aboard.
by BoyzRback07 on Feb 23, 2008 5:25 PM CST up reply actions
yeah, but if a LT can do that
on a consistent basis, he won't be making only 400,000 too long. He'll be making 7-9 mil in no time.
in no time ??...Free, MacQ are signed long term.
by BoyzRback07 on Feb 23, 2008 7:13 PM CST up reply actions
If Free plays as well as Flo, don't tell me that
his agent won't want to renogotiate his contract for more money.
ummm...who said he's gonna be as good ?
and there is no way in hell a guy would go from 400,000 to 7-9 million no matter how good he is...you got to put in the time...
by BoyzRback07 on Feb 23, 2008 9:30 PM CST up reply actions
oh...so if he doesn't play like a Pro Bowler??
we aren't going to be any good ?
might as well mail in our 9-7 record..huh Terry ?
by BoyzRback07 on Feb 23, 2008 9:46 PM CST up reply actions
thats correct, if your LT doesn't play great
your offense will not be good, thats well konwon fact. Name me an offense that does?
well....seeing there are only 4 Pro Bowlers ....
only 4 Pro Bowl LT's played in the Pro Bowl...so I can only imagine 28 other teams have bad offenses ???????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????? ???????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????
I'm no longer debated this dead horse....next.
by BoyzRback07 on Feb 24, 2008 12:22 PM CST up reply actions
you can play at pro bowl level and still not
make the pro bowl, it happens all the time.
ok...doing this just for you Terry...
It's a complete waste of time to prove my point....but here goes:
Name me the Starting LT on these teams that is considered a quality Pro Bowl LT ? :
Better question, If you can name the starting LT on any of these teams ?, without looking it up, I'll give you a blue star and a lolipop.
In parenthisis is the scoring ranking of each team.
1)Indy(3)
4)GB(4)
5)SD(5) -2nd year starter
6)Jacksonville(6) -no elite QB either
7)Arizona(7) -back up Kurt Warner
8)Pittsburgh(9)
9)Houston(12) - Matt Schuab
10)New Orleans(12)
11)NYG(14) -Eli
12)Minn(15) -QB sucks
13)Detroit(16) -journeyman QB
14)Philly(17)
15)Chicago(18) -no QB or RB or WR
ALL of these teams average 21 points or better...
Now tell me that we can't replace an aging, expensive LT, on a team that has a Pro bowl players at QB, RB, WR, TE, and two other Pro Bowl OLineman.....that is 6 Pro Bowlers on offense..If we can't score with them....Jason Garrett must be fired !!!!
you can stop the whining.. we'll do fine..relax.

Then, why are U so pumped about signing Z. Thomas
A waste of $3 mil for this current season on an undersized ILB who's past his prime and on the recovering end of several concussions.
He's not a young guy who can contribute... esp after missing so many games last year.
me ???...cuz signing Zack....
let's us cut or trade Ayodele and knock 1-2 million off our cap number..plus Thomas is better than Ayodele....hands down.
by BoyzRback07 on Feb 23, 2008 9:33 PM CST up reply actions
If he can stay healthy...
I loved watching Zach Thomas...
IN HIS PRIME.
And that's when it would've been cool to have him as a member of the Dallas Cowboys.
I guess my main concern is all the many other players that need to be re-signed plus the fact that Thomas is one-two-three helmet-to-helmets away from being wasted money.
prime ?? last year averaged 10.4 tackles/game
2006 had over 150 tackles...how far from his prime do you think he is ?

Bye Flo
New agent = player seeking a big payday
Go for it Flo, I wish him well.
true Tom, as soon as i read that..I removed him
from the Dallas Cowboy depth chart. He either plays for the minimum...or kick rocks...go play for Chicago, KC, Miami, Atlanta, or better yet....go team up with your boy Larry Allen in San Fran...lol...and collect paychecks...
The clown has received over 30 million in his career already....not enough ????
I know if I was already set for life finacially, and wanted to go out on top with a championship team, I'd play for $1,000,000 base, to assure that we can bottle up all our other free agents.
Think 7-time Pro Bowler, first ballot Hall of Famer Zack Thomas next time you go off and be a rogue LT for hire. It's all about the money..huh?
What a...dipshit
Doug Free or MacQ will be wearing your RING.....dumbazz

Boyz
Can you honestly say that in the same situation, you'd pass up, hypothetically 5 million dollars of additional money to go to Miami or San Fransisco?
It's easy to put down athletes who are set for life, but the fact is that It's very difficult to say no to that much additional dough.

I don't blame him
This is his last chance to score big in FA. He's the biggest (pun intended) LT on the open market. It's time for the Cowboys to move on, as well as Flo.
by APerfectStar on Feb 23, 2008 7:49 PM CST up reply actions
No kidding
In the NFL, you get very few chances at a big contract, and your body (and brain, sometimes) pay the price for the rest of your life for the work you've done. Flo is playing next year; the question is whether he's playing in Dallas or elsewhere. I am sure that if we offered Flo a comparable, but slightly smaller contract than some other team like the Bears, he would stay. But, if the Bears or whomever offer him a lot more, he'd be crazy to stay. I am sure Flo feels some loyalty toward Dallas, but I guarantee you that whatever loyalty he feels is greater than what the team feels toward him.
The NFL is a team game during the season, but players have to protect themselves and their futures when they have the 2-3 opportunities to do so over the course of their careers (if they're lucky). If Flo doesn't come back, I hope he gets his huge payday somewhere else. He's earned it, no matter how big the numbers are. This isn't some kind of Latrell Spreewell ("I got kids to feed") situation. Most people in any profession that have proven themselves to be one of the best want to be paid like it.
I hate to lose him BUT
#1 - Just because he had a great year this last year doesn't mean he'll do it again. Two years ago he was injured and gone.
#2 - I like Flo alot but don't love him because of those freaking false starts. As much as he shuts guys down he seems to get penalties when we absolutely cannot have them.
#3 - We need cap space and if he is looking for the big bucks then he can beat it. Sorry Flo but if you haven't seen enough loyalty from the boys and just want to see the money have fun in Baltimore protecting Carl Weatherbee or whoever they will have playing QB.
I agree King...
1)He was second in the NFL in false starts.
2)He was second in the NFL in holding calls.
that equates to 18 additional sacks he gave up.
NO...I don't agree with going for the money...I don't blame him, but I do believe if I was set for life financially, I'd rather take a severe home team discount, knowing I'm a big link towards winning a SB...
Zack Thomas is playing for 2,000,000 ,there is no doubt he would have gotten more money to play for a mediocre team........yet he took a 5,000,000 pay cut to come play for a winner....bye bye Flo......
and once again...don't ever come back here and expect to retire a Cowboy either....nuff said.
by BoyzRback07 on Feb 23, 2008 8:16 PM CST up reply actions
you have got to be kidding
you're lost if you think a team is going to give an aging veteran like Zack Thomas a seven million deal, try veteran minimum with incentives.
Next year when Thomas meets his incentive bonus, that will be more dead money on our cap next year
rephrased for the uninformed....and " lost "
Zack Thomas is/was/and always will be considered a better overall contributer to the NFL, his team, and to society in general...than Flo Adams...
He is a 7 Time Pro Bowler, A first ballot Hall of Famer, and one of the classest guys ever to play the game...He has overcome his physical short comings to rate as one of the all time greatest LB's ever too play...
Flozell Adams will be forgotten the moment he retires. As good as he was for us, we were more than good to him, and he has a net worth in the same 50 million dollar range as Thomas..yet that's not good enough for him. Fire his agent, then bolt for the dollars...THAT is how I'll ALWAYS remember Flo if he bails out.
That being said...and being only 2 years older than Flo. and arguably still a better performer.
Zack Thomas has decided the only thing in life he does not have is a Super Bowl ring. Not that he needs one to justify his career. Cuz it should be every players dream and goal once they enter the league.
ohh...about the salary,
...Zack Thomas' 2007 Salary : Base: $5,650,000
Salary Cap : $7,987,000
http://content.usatoday.com/sports/f...
2008 Salary : Base: $1,000,000
Salary Cap : $2,000,000
Pay cut taken to come play for a winner:
Base Differential = $4,650,000
Cap Differential = $5,987,000
That's what Champions do...........and "Imbasile" comes to mind if you think that a vet minimum w/bonus is all Zack would have gotten on the open market to the dozen teams that were vying for his services.

Good move
I don't think the Cowboys will suffer, they will have a misstep every now and then, but every young tackle does. If we ever want Free to develop into something we have to give him a chance. Also, this gives us a chance to go after a FA or Hall. I think Free will become a very good LT in this league.
Uh Oh....Bigg to LT?
"And that's a part of this decision. You know Flo. You know where you are. One thing we did, obviously, Leonard Davis came in here as what we believed to be heck of a left tackle. He's hard to get around out there. So it's not just young guys out there. That gives you some things to think about. I'm not saying at all that's what you do, but certainly that was a consideration when we signed him."
LT is arguably
the most important position on the team.
we will miss Flo.
I think we would have been batter off letting Zach and Hamlin walk and keepin Flo.
I hope I am wrong
yeah, tell that to Tampa, Baltimore, NYG.
Brad Johnson, Trent Dilfer, Eli Manning
all have rings, and QB ratings under 80.0...next.
