Talkin' Zach Thomas and cornerbacks
Mickey Spags most recent novel concerns Zach Thomas. It’s a pretty good article and I recommend that you read it. But in the interest of time, I’ll pull out the two most relevant parts. One concerns the good job the Dolphins defense did on the Cowboys until late in the game when the two teams met early in 2007. Mickey relates what Romo said to him after the game.
I remember Romo telling me a while afterward the Dolphins' defense was extremely difficult to play against. And he said one reason was the Thomas' ability to play the pass from his middle linebacker position; that he still had the speed and savvy to get depth under all those throws down the middle. And I'm darn sure you don't remember Pro Bowl tight end Jason Witten, he of the 96-catch season, caught only two passes in that game, matching his season low.
The other nugget of interest are the numbers for cutting someone to make room for Thomas.
Plus cutting or trading guys costs. Cut or trade Carpenter, as many of you are suggesting, would cost the Cowboys $4.5 million this year if done before June 1 or $1.5 million this year and $3 million next if later. The same with Ayodele, the guy it would seem Thomas might challenge for a starting job. The Cowboys still must account for three-fifths of his prorated $5 million signing bonus. That comes to $3 million if not on the roster before June 1 or $1 million this year and $2 million next if he vanishes afterward.

A good article over at SI.com on the CB's at the combine today.
A couple of samples:
Mike Jenkins, South Florida: Jenkins was clearly the class of the cornerback position Tuesday. He started swiftly, clocking in the mid 4.3s in the 40. Jenkins continued to impress with a great practice session, showing some of the finest footwork, hip movement and hands of the day. He also completed 18 reps on the bench, one of the better marks for his position. Scouts came away thinking Jenkins had solidified himself as the top corner in the draft.
We might have known that if the NFL Network would have bothered to show us his workout.
On the downside:
Brandon Flowers, Virginia Tech: Scouts and general managers from a number of teams ranked Flowers as their top cornerback in the draft, but that is likely to change. Flowers was unable to break the 4.5-second mark Tuesday and looked ordinary during the practice session.
Also, from the Ranch Report: DRC’s representatives say that the Cowboys are the team that have shown the "most interest" in DRC. I like.

Jerry Jones discusses the labor agreement and the possible labor unrest in the future. My mind is too caught up in this offseason, I can’t even contemplate down-the-road labor issues right now.

so what it comes down
to is that Carpenter won't be traded or cut so everyone can relax. It would be cheaper to trade or cut Ayodele which I think is almost certain now.

according to Mickey cutting Ayodele won't happen
as well. read carefully Cowboys81.

The same with Ayodele. Understand.

cutting Ayodele would be cheaper
and where in that quote does it say that Ayodele won't be cut??
He said it would cost us 1 mil this year and 2 next year for Ayodele. That's cheaper than Carpenter at 1.5 and 3 mil for after June 1st. This is setting up nicely for Carpenter to take over in 2009 because Burnett will probably not be back after next season.
Too easy Terry, read more carefully next time..lol

thats not what I read
Mickey was clearly implying neither Carp or Ayodele will get cut. Seems pretty obvious to me, cutting either one will cost Cowboys too much money.
by Terry on Feb 26, 2008 7:59 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
your assuming what he meant now
not what might happen. He didn't go over what it would save against the cap and I think Boyz had those numbers for Ayodele. Something like 1.5 or 2 mil if he was a June 1st cut.

Cutting most anyone carries a cap penalty
Not saying they'll cut Ayodele, but it seems like we have too many LBs. Something's gotta give, and saving $4 million this year and $3 million next year might be worth it despite the cap penalty.

Something will have to give
We probably won't be carrying 5 ILB's on the 53-man roster. It's possible, but I doubt it.

well, then Carp has to go because he has
Thomas' number #54. That was supposed to be a joke. ;)

someone is going like Grizz said
Adoyele would make the most sense since his cap hit would be the cheapest and we would save a few bucks.

Cutting Ayodele is still possible
Just because there's a penalty doesn't mean it won't happen. His salary is around $5m, so cutting him is still cheaper than keeping him. Still, remembering our last stop in cap hell, talking about cap penalties and squeezing guys in still makes me nervous.

Ayodele may have
some trade value
by TrueBlue24 on Feb 26, 2008 8:26 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
True, though the penalty applies
whether he's cut or traded. The question will be if we can squeeze the whole thing on this year's cap or if they wait to cut/trade him until June 1st.

I'm worried that
over the next couple of weeks the 'Legend of DRC' will grow and we won't have a chance even at #22.

I stated that in another diary, Grizz

DRC is a stud
I still think we have a real shot at him at #22 because he still is a div I-AA product. I think that alones takes him out of the top 10 automatically.
I'm worried about Houston at #18, if he gets by them, we have a real shot.
by Terry on Feb 26, 2008 7:48 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
I hope so Terry
But I'm afraid his performance today( and deon pimping him) may have put him in the top 10.
He is a stud!I'd love to get him, even if we have to move up

If I had to guess
it seems DRC might be the second or probably third ranked CB behind Jenkins and McKelvin. I don't know how often 3 CB's have been taken before the 22 pick but we should get someone good regardless.

DRC's ball skills are so good that
I could see him going both ways like Primetime at the next level.

28-yr-old Vet CB available, better than Reeves
The Jets just released corner Andre Dyson in a cost-cutting move to help them clear more space under the cap.
This could be a lower-tier FA signing that won't cost much... that is, if Dyson can agree to an affordable deal.
He had a nagging foot injury late last season, but nothing serious that a good off season of therapy and rest can't heal.
If the King doesn't make a move for DeAngelo Hall, I wouldn't mind seeing the Cowboys sign Dyson and draft a corner with one of the first two picks in the April '08 Draft.

Mickey Spagnola Halftruths
Notice how Mickey glossed over the most important aspect of cutting Ayodele?
Hey, cap space is cap space, no matter what the base salary savings might be.
Ayodele's scheduled base salary and (CAP charge):
2008 - 2.5 mil (3.5 mil)
2009 - 2.75 mil (3.75 mil)
If the Cowboys
(1) Cut Ayodele after June 1st, OR
(2) Cut him now, and take one of the two Veteran exemptions allowed per team to treat, CAP wise, as though cut after June, the results would be increased CAP space.
2008; 3.5 mil - 1 mil bonus acceleration = 2.5 mil INCREASE IN 2008 CAP space.
2009; 3.75 mil - 2 mil bonus acceleration = 1.75 mil INCREASE IN 2009 CAP space.
Yes...you have to carry "dead money" on your 2008 and 2009 CAP (1 mil 2008, 2 mil 2009). But those are very high salaries for a backup, and if you believe in the "closing window" theory, the Boys may need the CAP space now to sign someone at a more critical position (than backup LB).
Also, Mickey IMPLY'S that you can trade a player and spread his accelerated bonus over 2 years. THIS IS WRONG. The CBA is very clear on this point - all remaining bonus proration is accelerated into the year the trade occurs. Too expensive to trade Carp.

knew i could count on DeRat....
Now can we please trade Ayodele to Atlanta, along with Henry, picks #22 & #28, and a 4th .....and get our boy D Hall...#3 , #37, and #49........now !!

Hey Boyz, you'd make a great salesman!!!
by kcbrett5 on Feb 27, 2008 8:16 AM CST up reply actions 0 recs
lol....I am a salesman...
Once again...if this trade happens...I would NOT draft DMac......I would trade down from #3 Atl....to #5 KC(covet J Long)......to #9 Balt(covet M Ryan) ....and then chose DRC at #9...and amass at least 2 more 2nd round picks , and more...
That's my dream...and i'm going with it...
Imagine DRC at #9, and have at least 5 2nd rounders ?????????????????

I have a problem with Hall and so does Mick
this is from Mick's mail for this week.
I know you are not a big DeAngelo Hall fan and neither am I, but if the Cowboys were to trade one of those first-round picks for him, wouldn't it be like when the Cowboys signed Deion Sanders in the sense that nobody liked him with the Falcons but once he was in Dallas it turned out great for both sides?
Mickey: You should be required to wash your mouth out with soap, mentioning Deion and DeAngelo in the same breath. Please. You're right on one thing: I'm not even a little DeAngelo Hall fan. I think he's a coach killer and a locker room cancer. I'd rather use my first-round pick on a rookie corner than a guy with a track record like his. And tell me this, other than the first season in Dallas, did the Cowboys after that ever win more than 10 games in a season with Deion on the roster? Ever win more than one playoff game? The risk-reward for Hall is far too high.
I totally agree with Mick, much rather have DRC or McKelvin that that cancer Hall anyday. Too risky for my blood.
by Terry on Feb 27, 2008 8:35 AM CST up reply actions 0 recs
that's absurd.....Mickey don't know crap.....
A coach killer ???...Bobby Petrino is the biggest loser coach ever to play the game....He'll never ever ever land another NFL coaching job as long as he lives....count on it....ummm...current Cowboys coach Brett Maxie was his position coach for several years.....If "HE" was to tell me he is a disruptive cancer in the locker room....then maybe i'd listen..Micky is just shootin' out the side of his mouth and doesn't know the real scenario at all...like usual....How in the world could you pass up an opportunity to have DeAngelo Hall AND DRC , or McKelvin....We NEED "2" top flight DB's here in Dallas....not one rookie.
by BoyzRback07 on Feb 27, 2008 9:01 AM CST up reply actions 0 recs
we do have 2 top flight CBs
adding one more is all we need this year. When healthy, Henry is a very good corner, and quite frankly, I don't think Hall is that much better. Very CB overrated IMO.
by Terry on Feb 27, 2008 9:08 AM CST up reply actions 0 recs
c'mon.....geezz...
what kinda comment is that ?
we do have 2 top flight CBs (none / 0)
adding one more is all we need this year.
Our current roster has 2 signed CB's.... we ONLY need one CB ????
Try 4.....we need 4 CB's to fill the CB position...When healthy
,
When has this guy been healthy ??...His entire Cowboy career has been marred by injuries of some sort....He is closing in on 33-34 years old, and certainly not reliable enough to not address his replacement ...Right Now...
Henry is a very good corner, and quite frankly, I don't think Hall is that much better.
Very CB overrated IMO.
Give me a break...He's been in the league 4 years and already has 2 Pro Bowls...I'm not even gonna justify that nonsense....
by BoyzRback07 on Feb 27, 2008 9:30 AM CST up reply actions 0 recs
No one is asking
for you to "justify that nonsense". We can evaluate for ourselves.
by Dave Halprin on Feb 27, 2008 9:53 AM CST up reply actions 0 recs
I agree to a point
Henry is a very good corner, I'm not taking anything away from his game, but at his age and his history of injury and missing games every year, Dallas really needs two cover corners in this draft, one to play the slot this year and be the replaceent for Henry, I think Henry will be cut after next season, and another to battle Ball at the four/five spot this year.
With the way the NFL is going with so much spread offense, you cant just get away anymore with one top cover corner and a solid second corner, teams really need another cover corner at the third spot, the slot and a good prospect at the fourth spot, with a project at the fifth spot, Dallas has the one and two spot locked up this year and a project as the fifth spot, but the thrid and fourth spot is void.
by Deke on Feb 27, 2008 9:56 AM CST up reply actions 0 recs
I agree Deke, but given Henry's contract
we might be stuck with him for a few more years unless we can trade him. I'd just rather have Henry because at least you know what you're getting with him, I don't like Hall's character at all, I think he's a punk.
But you're absolutely right, having 3 quality CBs is a must in todays pass happy league.
by Terry on Feb 27, 2008 10:29 AM CST up reply actions 0 recs
Trading won't help...
Unless I'm mistaken, cutting a player and trading a player result in the same cap hit. So while we might get something back of marginal value in a trade, it won't help with the cap ramifications.
For the record, I think we can get away with adding one high-quality CB in the draft, but doing so twice would be nice. DRC, Jenkins, or McKelvin would all be acceptable, even if we have to trade a later pick to move up to secure them.
by grapejoos on Feb 27, 2008 10:38 AM CST up reply actions 0 recs
i am all for that grape joos
I'm think we trade up as well....DRC.....
by BoyzRback07 on Feb 27, 2008 3:43 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
and Terry....as far as trading Henry....
He was in the proposed trade to get Hall in the first place.....
Henry
Ayodele
#22
#28
#121
for
Hall
#3
#37
#49
which is an ideal trade for both teams....

I understand that
but I just don't like Hall and would rather have Henry, Newamn and a rookie next season. I know you think his attitude will be fine, but I'm not as big on taking risks as you are, his character certainly worries me.
