Cowboys clear cap room by trade; still unlikely to make splash in free agency
So the Tuna is collecting some of his old players, in this case our very own Jason Ferguson. At least the Cowboys were able to get something for Fergy, even though it’s clear this was an effort to gain some cap space.
The Cowboys are trading Ferguson to the Dolphins for a 2009 sixth-round pick, and the teams will swap sixth-rounders this year. Dealing Ferguson clears about $2.4 million on this year's salary cap.
Moving from the back of the 6th round to the front is not too bad, it will be nice to pick almost back-to-back in rounds five and six – with compensatory picks slid in between. Or maybe it will allow the Cowboys some more firepower to jump up in an earlier round to get someone they really want. And we get a 6th-round pick next year, which is nice. But clearly this was about the cap and about the Cowboys belief in Jay Ratliff AND Tank Johnson. Now, the Cowboys could go for a 3-4 NT in the draft that would allow them some flexibility along the line – yes, I would still like to see Ratliff at DE. That seems less likely now, but we’ll have to wait until the draft to divine Dallas’ true intentions.

It doesn’t look like the Cowboys will be major players in free agency this year besides our own guys and Zach Thomas. We are pushing up against the cap with all our recent moves, including the Flozell deal. The DMN blog says:
According to my capologist (Todd Archer), the Cowboys have about $2 million to play with after the flurry of moves in the last 24 hours (Adams signing, tenders to restricted free agents, Jason Ferguson trade).
That’s not a whole lot and we still have to worry about the rookie class from the draft. Akin Ayodele could be another casualty somewhere down the line.
I still haven’t seen an exact breakdown of the Flozell deal but it appears to be a reasonable contract not out of line with some of the better LT’s in the league. Of course, the six-year aspect was somewhat surprising but that was probably a case of spreading some of the impact over the long-term that will help the Cowboys. I'm not a contract or cap specialist but Stephen Jones seems to be very adept at keeping us out of salary-cap hell, so I’m trusting him on this one. You can read about the Flozell deal here and here.

ProFootballTalk , for all their flaws, is a good place to keep up with free agent signings.
Since we probably won’t be doing much in free agency, I thought I’d throw a new mock draft from Todd McShay at you.
- Dallas Cowboys (from 10-6 Cleveland) -- Mike Jenkins, CB, South Florida
Assuming owner Jerry Jones doesn't package picks to trade up, expect Dallas to use its two picks to address needs at corner, receiver, offensive tackle and possibly running back. Jenkins' combination of size, speed and athleticism is outstanding and his recognition skills continue to improve each season. Jenkins also brings versatility to the table as a cornerback who can also play some safety and chip in on returns if necessary.
- Dallas Cowboys -- Felix Jones, RB, Arkansas
If owner Jerry Jones can't strike a deal for McFadden, he could settle for Arkansas' other first-round running back prospect. Jones is a speedster who could complement current Dallas RB Marion Barber well and provide a home run threat in the return game.
I like this draft also. I liked the one with DRC and Felix Jones from Don Banks and I like this one. If we can pick up a top-flight CB and RB in round one, I’m happy.

Javon Walker released by Denver
When healthy, Walker's been a force, posting 1,000-yard seasons in 2004 and '06. But in 2005 (his last year with the Packers) and '07, he couldn't stay healthy, and there've been rumblings that he may need microfracture surgery on his knee down the line. The 6-foot-3, 215-pounder turns 30 in October.
It totally depends on how much he wants, but I'd rather have him than Glenn.
I think it's a real possibility
that we pursue this. I don't think Glenn is coming back next year, just a feeling I got.

I hope so
If we can give him a small deal to let him prove his worth (and limit our cap exposure), I really like the upside there. Of course, other teams will have the same idea, so hopefully the Sherman connection is worth its weight in gold. Playing with TO would be great for Walker's career, even though he wants the spotlight.
I don't see TG coming back either, though I hope he can. If he's healthy, no need for Walker; don't need 2 guys with the same knee problem. At least Walker is younger.
Walker is 29
so he's not exactly a spring chicken.

were going to clear
another 5 to 7 mil with some restructuring of players contracts and player(s) releases. Were going to make at least one splash.
Mike Jenkins would be a horrible pick at 22. That's a reach there. I would much rather trade up a few spots for Mendenhall and take Cromartie at 28 if he is there. If not, trade out of the first for another second round pick. That 28th spot is not very good for what we need.

Jenkins, DRC and McKelvin
all first-round talent and excellent picks.

agree...and all are gone by 22

I hope not
please let one of them slide.

Hope we can trade up
I'd have no problem with trading any picks after the second round to secure one of those 3 guys with our first pick. Hopefully there is some team in the middle of the draft willing to slide back.
Another solid idea from the 'Joos'

Grizz, I don't like Jenkins because of his
character and work ethic concerns. Its my understanding that this kid has all the talent in the word but doesn't work the hardest and has an attitude.
After the Derek Ross fiasco, I'd only go with McKelvin or DRC in the first. Jenkins is too risky for me.
agreed Terry
If he was a second round pick, yes but not anywhere near 22. Same goes for Talib.

Don't like
Jenkins at 22 sorry. Both he and Talib will be over drafted. I know both are expected to go in the top 20. I hope they do because I don't want any part of those players in that spot.
BTW, Stewart is dropping like a rock on the Mocks like I expected. Mendenhall has surpassed him. Stewart has dropped as low as 25.

I'm starting to really like Cromartie, but at 22 that might be a little too high for him. I would take him over Jenkins and Talib in a second. Talib is just not very good from the tape I watched of him and after hearing what Mayock had to say.
I really expect Jerry to package both #1's and move up for a player like Mendenhall, or stay at 22 and pick the best available player and trade down the 28th pick. The middle of the first round is a mess because this draft class is so weak all around.

I like the King pick in the
second round. If we can trade down the 28th pick and move a little higher in the second to get him it would be great value.

Don't like these two picks
Our defense wasn't the weakness in the playoffs. It was our offense that couldn't put up more than three points in the second half, causing us to lose a game where we held the eventual world champions to 60 yards and seven points in the second half. This type of offensive stagnation is going to occur against a good defense if T.O. isn't at full speed. Our biggest need is a top-flight receiver to complement T.O. and prevent an offensive drop-off when he's hurt, which becomes more likely as he ages. I would much rather see Limas Sweed or a similar receiver with big-time potential than Felix Jones. We have Marion Barber and can pick up a high caliber running back later in the draft. I'd much rather see a top-shelf wide receiver than a running back in the first round. If we don't get one and T.O. gets hurt next year...well, we have already seen what happens.

IMO, the best receiver in the draft
is Devin Thomas from Michigan St. He's the only guy I'd consider in the 1st rd. I think guys like Sweed, Jackson and Manningham are overrated.
You gotta be kidding me
Our biggest need is a top-flight receiver to complement T.O.
The most glaring weakness on this team is pass defense. I don't even think thats up for debate.Sure it would be nice to get a top flight reciever. But its not happening in FA and not in the draft either. We need CB's badly, ones that can play....not the reeves and nate jones variety.
I'd be very surprised if we addressed the WR position before the 3rd round.
