Gregg Williams????

Not the "he who shall not be named" Greg Williams, but the Defensive Coach Greg williams has supposedly talked to the cowboys about a job.

http://beta.profootballtalk.com/2008...

Now I know many of discount Profootballtalk, but they are just reporting what Adam Schefter is reporting ("rumor-monger" moniker asider).

What in the heck would Williams bring since he is a 4-3 coach. I would much rather have Capers over Williams.

Just what we need.
He'll definitely light a fire on the defense. Either Roy Williams and the rest of the defensive backs and linebackers learn how to cover and tackle or they will find themselves on the bench. Just ask Lavar Arrington.   Ben A. Centreville VA

As much as I try not to like this...

I think Gregg Williams could be a big help to this team. The guys in Washington seemed to have a lot of respect for him, and I think having the wealth of 34 experience we have on the coaching staff (Grantham, Dat, Stew, and Wade, assuming Williams and Capers are an either/or thing) could certainly camflouge his inexpereince with it.

Plus, I'd have to assume he'd have some kind of a special role- that the job title of 'Assistant Head Coach- Defense' would actually fit. Maybe he'd have a say in the defensive game plan, then have Bradie's and Wade's ears regarding adjustments, situational calls, yadda yadda.

All that said, he was certainly responsible for some pretty bad defensive showings up there. Hard to pin that all on him, though- the Redskins have been a hodgepodge of crappy football operations for as long as I care to remember.

Also, anyone think Bryan Stewart is having trouble sleeping these days?

I disagree

Williams is a 4-3 coach not a 3-4 guy which we need. Capers is the man for the job.

If you assume he's given the DC job

then yeah, the resume doesn't fit the position. I made the leap that he would be given a job as a defensive assistant of some kind, and Stew/Wade would keep their  split of the DC responsibilities .

All depends on what his responsibilities would be. And if there's actually any fluff to the cruft here.

I think if Williams comes

Stewart is gone. In fact, if Williams or Capers comes Stewart gone. Jerry must not be happy with what Stewart has done his first year. Rumor is Capers has been offered the DC job if he wants it.

And the S-T article mentioned...

... that Williams coached LBs for two seasons prior to his promotion to DC with the Titans back in the late 90s.

How about this...

Capers: Asst Head Coach - Defense
Stewart:  Defensive Coordinator
Grantham:  D-Line
Williams:  LBs
Campo:  DBs
Dat:  Quality Control

With Wade & Jerry interviewing Williams, I think it's more about putting pressure on the QB, as opposed to an overhaul in defensive philosophy.

Phillips, Capers, Grantham, and Stewart are all well-versed in the 3-4 scheme.

The Ticket did a bit

in which Rhynes introduced Fake Greggo, the new coach of the Buffalo Bills. It was quite good, culminating with the classsic fart-and-fall-down they used for all their bits during that stage.
On a more serious note... Damn, we're bringing in the highly qualified coaches like there's no tomorrow. While this could be a blessing as more great minds dissect what went wrong and how to fix it, it could also make for too much authoritative figures and not enough decisions to go around.

Hmm..

Sounds like this could turn into a case of too many Chiefs and not enough Indians if you ask me.

I'm starting to think Capers isn't in the mix...

I believe I had read that an announcement was going to made last friday about the hiring of Capers....As much as I respect the concerns of Capers, about walking over Brian Stewarts ego....Get this man signed Jerry....and do it now. This man will be signed by somebody, I assure you that....Why not the Cowboys ?  Who in this league knows more about the 3-4 defense than Wade, Capers, and Bellicheat....Two Heads are always better than one....Stewart can retain his symbol Defensive Coordinator label....but I want Capers infusion in Wade's ear when calling out strategies and adjustments......

Your on a role Jerry.....convince Capers to come...heck...pay him the 2.5 million salary that he got last year in Miami...

I'm not sure what

to think about this. These guys are all quality coaches. Not a bum among them. Greg Williams has actually been a LB coach before. I'm not sure about Capers. I wonder what job Capers would be taking if Williams is going to be the LB's coach?? Just an asst. or some advisor job?? Jerry sure is going balls to the wall here, isn't he??

I'm all for Gregg Williams coming aboard as well.

Here:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gregg_W...
and Yes.....He was a Linebacker coach for some dominating defenses at the time, which is how he landed the defensive cooridinator position.....where he also did well...Capers has never been a linebacker position coach...although I'm sure he knows all about the position....In fact...

If we were somehow able to land both Capers and Williams...It would probably be the most talented coaching staff of all time.....Philips, Campo, Capers, Williams....wow...you'd think between all those minds they'd figure out a way to use Roy Williams more efficiently without bringing us heartache. and maybe provide some other coverage scheme that doesn't have our DB's playing 9 yards off the ball.

I say hire Williams as LB coach...and Capers as Associate Head Coach-Defense....and please...can somebody find Joe Avezanno to get back to where he belongs...> coaching our special teams.

Good discussion

There is a suspicion that in this era of football complexity Jerry Jones and Coach Wade may have concluded that the money invested in top coaching staffs needs to be expanded. The Cowboys have the money and need the victory to sell seat licenses for the new stadium so going all out for next year makes good sense in the coaching arena as well. Win the SB in Dallas next year and have offers as HCs for the following year for Williams and Capers both. I can see Stewart remaining as DC while a different titles goes to Williams and he oversees the training and planning but maybe not the defensive play calling.

Capers is wise not to accept a job before Washington interviews Patriot and Giants coaches and selects a HC. Once that happens he may be glad to come here if not selected.

Williams must also be leery of working for the two most meddlesome owners in succession (smile).

correct me if i'm wrong...

but arn't we in a 4-3 over 50% of the time anyway   i say get them both and let wade sort them out....and dont forget spencers in his 2nd year , he's going to be a stud...

you're onto something, hash...

imagine blending certain alignment schemes to form new ones to creatively pressure opposing offenses while making plays on "D."

it would be very interesting to see how this all pans out... although my preference is to be greedy and add BOTH The Dom and Greggo!!!

Jerry still shopping for coaches
Mac Engel, of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram, reports the Dallas Cowboys are interested in former Cincinnati Bengals linebackers coach Ricky Hunley.

I was just thinking that

if they want Hunley as the LB coach, than Williams or Capers are coming in as something more than a consultant. I think Stewart is out the more I think about it.

This coaching stuff bothers me

Sorry to sound like Galloway, but this sounds like another hair-brained Jerry scheme.  This team will never be right until he hires a real general manager.  He is the one constant in the last 12 years.  I hope I'm wrong.

well then it will never be right because

Jerry will never fire himself and hire a GM. If you're waiting for that to happen you better find another team to root for because Jones will be GM of the Cowboys for as long as he's alive and thats about a sure of a thing as the sun rising in the east every day.

That is my point

That is the sad part.  Like I said, I hope I'm wrong but he doesn't seem to learn his lesson.  He reaches for whatever shiney objects are out there like a compulsive shopper.  I will always be a fan as I have the last 42 years.  I am becoming less and less of a Jerry believer. Great marketer, mediocre general manager.  I don't want pro-bowlers or making it to, as Wade said "the Final Eight."  I want another Championship.  That is how we should measure success. If "Pro-Bowlers" is how we measure a team's success, we should become Cardinals fans where that kind of thing is significant because there's not much else.
