Cowboys about to hire new linebackers coach
It looks like we got a new LB coach.
Wade Phillips will fill the final spot on his coaching staff by naming Reggie Herring as the Cowboys' linebackers coach, according to a source.
Herring was named defensive coordinator at Texas A&M in January by new coach Mike Sherman. He was Arkansas' interim head coach for the Cotton Bowl.
Herring, 48, has spent two years in the NFL, serving as Houston's linebackers coach in 2002-03 where he worked with Cowboys defensive coordinator Brian Stewart.
Hey, this is good news. I've actually seen some of Herring’s work, being a follower of southern college football. I think this will work out well. Nick Eatman has a nice run-down of his history, here, including the fact that when he worked with Stewart in Houston it was under Dom Capers. Could this be some kind of omen that Capers might still be coming as a consultant?
Hat tip to albyman32 for first posting the rumor that looks like fact in this diary.

My pet cat from last year just got signed by the Dolphins. Must be the Todd Bowles/Paul Psaqualoni/Jeff Ireland connection.
The Miami Dolphins signed cornerback Joey Thomas on Friday.
Thomas was a third-round draft pick in 2004 by Green Bay, where he spent his entire rookie season. He spent part of 2005 with the New Orleans Saints, and was with the Dallas Cowboys during training camp last season.

Nick Eatman goes deep against our secondary, picking it apart like a surgeon.

Interesting re: Herring from DMN Blog...
Herring broke into coaching in 1981 with Jimmy Johnson at Oklahoma State after his playing career at Florida State ended.
Nick Eatman quote
Draft one? Possibly. Doesn't have to be in the first round, but probably on the first day.
What I been saying all along...
Second and third rounds this draft will have better value and will be more realistic for us since the top CB's will be gone when we pick.

I'm really anxious...
to see how our draft will turn out without Ireland. It seems like we haven't drafted an offensive player in the first round since I've been old enough to follow football, so I'm stoked for that possibility. I'm praying for either Mendenhall/Jones and DRC.
I like this hire....
I think it's a good fit, he has familiarity with Stewart at least...And the fact he is a true LineBackers coach...Gregg Williams and Dom Capers are over qualified to be just position coaches anyhow, so I never though either would come in just to handle LB duties. And they had DB backgrounds as well, not to say they couldn't coach LB's...
Plus this guy is a college style coach that is used
to driving home technique, fundamentals, disipline, and accountability. Which some players like to bitch about, but it actually makes them better. As DeMarcus Ware would attest to, Here's a quote about his relationship with our last LB coach Paul Pasqualoni ,
"He was a great leader on defense in general," Ware said. "Coaching-wise, he critiques us so much on every little thing we did that I hope the next coach is the same way. Everybody has their own style, but when you have a guy on you and pushing you and making you work harder than he's coaching, that makes players better."
I found it interesting that he said Pasqualoni was " A great leader on defense in general " ...almost sounds like he believes Pasqualoni was more respected and looked to as the defensive coordinator in some way over Brian Stewart. I really really hope this is some sort of prelude to Dom Capers getting hired.

More Herring
Talk about a very extensive background on the LB position in general, check out this timeline of experience regarding Reggie Herring:
• Played Linebacker @ Florida State 1978-1980: 3-yr starter leading the Seminoles in tackles all three of those seasons. Third in career tackles all time at FSU.
• First break as an assistant coach under Jimmy Johnson at Oklahoma State as grad asst. in ’81. After one season, Jimmy J promoted Herring to LBs coach, where he went on to hold that position ‘til 1985.
• Left Ok St to take the same asst coach position @ Auburn in ’86 under HC Pat Dye. Helped lead the Tigers to three consecutive SEC titles from 1987-1989 as LBs coach there.
• In ’92, Texas Christian hired him as their DC and LBs coach – Herring’s first gig as a D-Coordinator.
• After two seasons, he left TCU and become LBs coach at Clemson. In ’97, he was promoted to Defensive Coordinator, and held that position until 2001.
• In ’02, Herring was hired by Houston Texans HC Dom Capers as LBs coach until 2004. During that time, Texans’ starting LB Jamie Sharper led the NFL in tackles in 2003.
• In 2004, Capers and his assistants were released, and Herring accepted the position of DC and LBs coach at North Carolina State. His first year at NCSU, the Wolfpack defense led the nation in total defense, improving from 89th overall the prior season. That Wolfpack defense had current NFL defensive starters Mario Williams/DE (Houston), Manny Lawson/LB (San Francisco), John McCargo/DT (Buffalo) on that roster.
• In 2005, Herring was hired as DC by Arkansas’ Houston Nutt, and Herring helped improve the Razorbacks D in almost every statistical category.
• In Nov ’07 when Nutt left Arkansas to take the same position at Ole Miss, Herring was named assistant HC.
• In Jan ’08, ex-Green Bay Packers HC/ex-Houston Texans asst HC accepted the same position at Texas A&M University and hired Herring as the Aggies DC.
• However, in Feb’08, he resigned as Aggies DC to accept the position of LBs coach for the Dallas Cowboys.
I love the wealth of experience this new hire brings to our Beloved Boyz. The icing on the cake would be hiring "The Dom."
Oh yeah, and one other interesting note regarding Dom Capers and Gregg Williams -- who both recently intereviewed with the King and the Son of Bum... did you know that this tandem were the highest paid NFL assistant coaches prior to this season?
actually remember him playing....
I've been a FSU fan just about as long as i've been a Cowboy fan...I remember Herring...He was a stud on that team...my favorite at that time was DB Bobby Butler.
After seeing all this guys successful stops along the way, I'm very satisfied with this hire.
btw....Herring was one of the top salaried assistants in college football. Jerry sure likes to hire the top dogs.
