Dallas Cowboys lose Keith Davis, agrees to terms with the Dolphins
No surprise here, but Keith Davis has agreed to terms with the Miami Dolphins. He joins Julius Jones and Jacques Reeves as free-agents the Cowboys were willing to let go based on past productivity and the costs involved in this year’s free-agent market. This hurts us some on special teams, Davis’ strong-suit, but in Miami he is going to get a chance to compete at real playing time at safety.
The article talks about Davis and his career in the NFL, but the crazy part - something we know all about but Dolphins’ fans are probably just hearing about - is Davis’ history of attracting bullets.
Davis, a Texas native, has a strange history of getting shot. He missed the entire 2003 season after suffering a gunshot wound to his hip and elbow while waiting to pick up a friend at a topless club. Then-Cowboys coach Bill Parcells released Davis, but re-signed him a year later after he excelled during a stint with the Berlin Thunder of the now defunct NFL Europe league.
Davis was also shot in the head and thigh while driving down a Dallas highway in July 2006 as he was returning from a family vacation. The police described it as an attempted carjacking. None of the wounds were considered serious.

OH!
So that's why he's called 'Bullet'. I didn't know.

Davis thought the streets of Dallas were tough..
Wait till he gets to the streets of Miami...Overtown, Liberty City, Hialeah, NMB, Miami Gardens.........
It's a tough town...believe me...I just moved out
Look for the gun shot wounds to continue.

Parcells is So Predictable

No surprise
Davis was never going to be a starter here. I'm not sure if he will in Miami either. We have some good special teamers now with Austin, Watkins so he was expendable. Davis was Parcells boy so the writing was on the wall. I'm sure if we cut Spears he would be the next one.

Watkins will now have to step up as our #1
ST guy, and I think he'll excel in that capacity and eventually be a great backup to Hamlin.
by Terry on Mar 11, 2008 12:21 PM CDT reply actions 0 recs
Backup?
Watkins is a FS and will be the starter in 2009. He has the range and speed to be a good one. Hamlin is a true SS not a FS. The only reason he is playing FS is because we can't cut Roy yet. Once Roy gets cut next year the starting rotation in 2009 will be Watkins at FS and Hamlin at SS.

might want to wait on those predictions..........
seeing that Hamlin is NOT signed beyond this year.
And I sure wouldn't count Courtney Brown out of any discussions either at FS.

Your hopes are a little high
on a 7th round pick who couldn't cut it as a CB and the reason they moved him FS.
Even if Hamlin is not retained, Watkins will be the FS. The kid has the talent. Worst case scenerio it's Roy and Watkins or Watkins or another in 2009.
I do agree it's going to be difficult resigning Hamlin. A decision will have to be made on Hamlin or Newman, but not both.

Watkins might have talent, but
he has a long ways to go before becoming a good FS in this league.

the only way well know is if
he plays like any other position. He should get his chance at starting in 2009.

he'll get his opportunity this pre-season
we'll see how much he improves, this being his 3rd season where players who are good usually step up their game. If he doesn't show marked improvement, I seriously doubt he'll be ready to start by 2009.

nahh..your thoughts are a lil tainted....
He wasn't moved to FS from CB cuz he couldn't cut it, in fact with our new problem of having no depth there at all in CB group, he may get switched back.....that's too funny...He was a shut down corner in college. He was moved there to FS cuz his physical size and skills, long striding speed, and range covering skills, were better suited to unseat your boy Watkins, who they obviously aren't completely sold on......They simply saw Brown being a better at FS than CB....He was moved there immediately... not cuz he couldn't cut it...geeeez..
We'll sure find out this upcoming season ,who's progressed more.
Look for possibly Aqib Talib, Antoine Cason, Branden Flowers, Reggie Smith, Terrell Thomas, Chevas Jackson, ands Dwight Lowery to be making a similiar move at the next level.

Negative Boyz
Wade said over the summer Brown is better suited as a safety, not a CB. This was decided during training camp.
Brown a shut down corner at little Cal Poly. You can't be serious are you? I just fell off my chair, man, good one...lol
Brown won't be moved back to CB that's certain. Brown has speed, but it's long speed, not the quick type you need to play CB. The reason Wade thinks he would be decent FS is because of his range.
Don't count on Brown. At least Watkins was a true FS at Florida State and played against some good competition.
Alan Ball has a good chance at becoming the nickel CB. They are real high on him.

Ummm....ok ??
I say :
He was moved there to FS cuz his physical size and skills, long striding speed, and range covering skills, were better suited
They simply saw Brown being a better at FS than CB....He was moved there immediately
You say :
Brown is better suited as a safety, not a CB. This was decided during training camp.
Wade thinks he would be decent FS is because of his range.
Funny how your argument consist of exactly what I already stated...I simply said you can't count Brown out of the FS discussion...If you don't think he's talented enough. that's obviously just your unknown study of the guy, and surely an opinion based on nothing. Ask Jay Ratliff, and Craytron if 7th rounders can make it in this league.
And if your going to diss on somebody cuz of the school they went to, I can only assume your thoughts of DRC must be pretty low as well.....
by BoyzRback07 on Mar 11, 2008 7:17 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
I'm not saying he
isn't talented enough, but don't count on a small college 7th round pick from Cal Poly to beat out Watkins that's all.
And if your going to diss on somebody cuz of the school they went to, I can only assume your thoughts of DRC must be pretty low as well.....
No dissing on small colleges, I went to one. In fact the same one as Austin and he made it as a walk on. But, Brown was never considered a first round prospect like DRC the reason he was a 7th round selection. You can't even compare the talent between the two.
Don't discount Watkins is all I'm saying. He has the ability and now the experience to play the position, unlike when he was thrown in as a rookie.

You put weight into what round a guy is drafted
This is the reason I find your stance so illogical.
No dissing on small colleges, I went to one. In fact the same one as Austin and he made it as a walk on. But, Brown was never considered a first round prospect like DRC the reason he was a 7th round selection. You can't even compare the talent between the two.
Just so you know, DRC wasn't even known to most people, most scouts included until he showed up at the e/w shrine, and senior bowl games in January, and still wasn't considered a 1st rounder until after the Combine...Scott Wright had him rated 14-20 overall CB's in early December, and most others had him rated a late round(5th-7th)/UFA, if rated at all.
Some get the breaks, some don't.
Watkins was a 5th round pick for pete's sake...5th rounders are just as lucky, as 7th rounders to even make a roster in this league.
I'm a FSU fan and knew Watkins going into the draft..sure, he's got freakish measurables..but he wasn't all that special at the college level..
I can assure you Courtney Brown has the ideal skills, speed, and playmaking ability that would have shown just as well at FSU.
For one reason or another guys end up going to a lower level school and don't get noticed, nor do they get the respect they warrant with their play..It's the scouts that can decifer the skill set, and to project it to the next level are real gems of the trade. Statistically, Charles Tillman nor Rashean Mathis were any better than Brown, yet were discovered by a astute scout and brought to everyones attention. I don't care what level you play at, Courney Brown did not even give up a completed pass at all his senior season...Now that gets my attention. Who knows how this all works out..I like Watkins just as much, and both will be looked on to step it up this year, and I hope they do.

Could be but he is
going to have to make it as a FS, not a CB. His chances are slim right now at beating Watkins.
They really want Ball to be the nickel CB. Maybe he can show something in training camp.

You've been talking to the Cowboy Staff ?????
Find it's pretty strange we're in desperate need of CB's if Ball all but has wrapped up the nickle slot CB position before camp starts.
Back up FS position is up for grabs at this point.
Brown should be looked at Roy's replacement at SS.

No just reading on the website which you could
and find out what they are thinking. It's not that hard to figure out. I said he has a opportunity to compete for the nickel which Mickey said. He also said what I said in that they are high on Ball and looky here...wow! imagine that.
From Mickey's recent Q & A:
Mickey: I don't know about career, but at least for the 2008 season that is what you hope these two seventh-round draft choices would compete for in their second seasons. Remember now, Ball is a corner and Brown was moved to free safety. Ball will get a chance to compete for the third corner spot, but as for the second, I'm not so sure that is open for competition. Say what you want about Anthony Henry, but he did lead the team with six interceptions. And I don't think Terence Newman is taking a backseat to anyone any time soon. The scouting staff is high on Ball as a corner, I know that. As for Brown, he just needs some seasoning, having played at a lower level in college (Cal Poly) and mostly in man on the corner, and now switching positions. The Cowboys like the way he finds the ball, along with his speed.

When did I question Ball ?...
They will be drafting a first round CB....count on it..Of course Ball is in the mix to contribute...He's like the only signed back up on the roster.
You draft a few high round CB's....and he'll be right back there in the 4th-6th CB mix.
by BoyzRback07 on Mar 12, 2008 7:08 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
Ball and second year CB Evan Oglesby
are the two I know of and according to their roster we have Justin Phinisee,Tyler Everett, Quincy Butler as CBs. I heard Mickey talking about Oglesby also and how they like him also.
I think they would like Ball to be the starting nickel CB. He will have two years in this defense. Whether that happens or not I don't know, but there is a good chance he will be the nickel CB over anyone we draft this year.
You draft a few high round CB's....and he'll be right back there in the 4th-6th CB mix.
You mean one right? Because we may, if were lucky draft one CB in round one or two, but not more than one. The 22 pick will be a RB without question unless Jones slips a few spots and we trade down to get him. If the organization likes Ball as much as they say they won't trade up and reach for anyone.
Were not going to start a rookie CB to play the nickel, especially if it's King or Flowers. I still anticipate a veteran signing.

you're puttin' the cart before the horse
IMO, Watkins will be a great FS backup and ST ace with us and nothing more. If he ever ends up starting and playing well, thats great, but I don't see it happening.

He'll just duck for cover.
