Dallas Cowboys random articles

Here’s the breakdown on the deal Keith Davis got from the Dolphins.

Free agent defensive back Keith Davis has agreed to a two-year deal worth $3.5 million to play for the Miami Dolphins, a source said Tuesday.

And for more Keith Davis news...I turn to...Pravda? OK, I realize it’s 2008 and that the Soviet Union met its demise long ago, but growing up as a child of the 70’s/80’s, the idea that I can get news about Keith Davis signing with the Dolphins from Pravda struck me as very funny. I know that this is a different Pravda newspaper than the old communist propaganda organ, one run by former employees, but it’s still funny.

Mickey Spags laments the passing of the Julius Jones Era and wonders what went wrong.

Michael Irvin was inducted into the Texas Sports Hall of Fame. Read about it here and here.

How about a couple of random mock drafts? And by the standards of random, this first one really qualifies.

22 - Cowboys - Derrick Harvey, DE, Florida (6-5, 271) - The world's thriving NFL pundit market is certain Cowboys owner Jerry Jones is about to make a draft-day splash, but we have a feeling Dallas will stand pat in the interests of getting two really good players in the second half of the first round, as opposed to trading up for one elite big name. If the dominos fall the right way, Dallas could end up with the pass-rushing Harvey as the heir apparent to Greg Ellis at one of the outside linebacker slots.

28 - Cowboys - Devin Thomas, WR, Michigan State (6-2, 215) - Dallas obviously needs receiver help given the fact that Terrell Owens and (especially) Terry Glenn are both on the decline, and it would make the most sense for Dallas to use its second pick of the first round to address this issue. The recent riser Thomas might be gone by then, but if so, Limas Sweed and/or Mario Manningham figure to be around.

Derrick Harvey at #22 for the Cowboys? I get that we can never have enough pass-rushing OLB’s in the 3-4, but I think we’ve stocked up over the last few drafts. And the heir apparent to Greg Ellis? I guess this guy missed that whole Anthony Spencer draft-thingy that happened last year. Now Devin Thomas I kind of get, but in this draft Dallas doesn’t address either cornerback or running back in the first round. Not likely.

OK, how about a little more sensible one.

22. Dallas Cowboys (From Cleveland) Justin King CB, Penn State King's speed and athleticism provide a very workable foundation for the Cowboys to utilize at a position of need.

28. Dallas Cowboys Felix Jones RB, Arkansas Jones might not be the Arkansas running back the Cowboys hoped to get, but trading up to land McFadden is too costly, both in terms of draft picks and guaranteed dollars for the more prominent Razorback. The Cowboys won't be disappointed with the other one, though. He should make an immediate impact as a runner and pass-catcher.

Justin King may be a bit of a reach at #22, but if the top corners are off the board, it’s not out of the realm of possibility.

With Reeves and JJ gone

I simply cannot imagine leaving the first round with anything but a CB and a RB.

Period.

End of story.

The first draft projection is idiotic even if Spencer didn't get much time last year.  The fact that he proved himself worthy of the early pick while starting five(?) games makes this guy foolish.

While I agree

That those two are the greatest need, RB is deep enough in this draft where I wouldn't be shocked to see CB and WR with 22 and 28, and RB next.

That Carucci clown over at NFL.com.......

Changes his mocks as much as babies change diapers.....geeeez...Justin King at #22 ?...I don't think so...It was DRC a few days ago.....maybe someone at the water cooler told him DRC wouldn't be there by then, and he just filled it with any 'ole name to get his blog spot filled.

As soon as I saw Pravda,

this went through my head.
'A well known Cowboy was granted large sums of money that will bring him no happiness. This unexplainable decision was made by a diabolical group of aquatic mammals who plan to corrupt his fragile psyche with dreams of the redundant. This well-known Cowboy was expendable, as all popular American cultural figures are, and has a history of attracting the ire of those around him in the form of bullets. Oddly enough, he has no previous history with Indians. Our editor is investigating whether this pig did such acts to himself in lieu of a Native American to do it to him, likely because he and his swine brethren killed the majority of their people off for no explainable reason.'

Perfect!

Thanks for the laugh BudLight! That is what I was thinking when I saw Pravda, too. Excellent comment.

that is the understatement of the century Grizz

Justin King may be a bit of a reach

That would be a tremendous reach as we would be able to trade down in the second and get a CB every bit as good as this kid.

Now Devin Thomas I would be really happy with at #28, this kid is the most explosive big WR in the draft, would love to land him.

Agreed on both counts

King should be in the discussion for our third pick with guys like Chris Johnson and Red Bryant. Taking him with a first rounder would be very foolish with his current standing.
Thomas worries me a bit because he's only had one productive season in his career- in 2006, he only accumulated 90 receiving yards. His potential, however, is pretty intriguing. He's a similar prospect to what Sidney Rice was last year, and as with Rice he would have been well served by returning to school- with another season like the one he just put up, he would have been a top 5 pick next year.

I just think Thomas' ceiling is really high

what everyone saw his senior year was just scratching the surface to what kind of skills he will bring to the next level.

Players in college who only have 1 year of great production don't worry me because some kids mature and blossom later than others, just like in the pros.

If we drafted Thomas, he'd be a developmental prospect anyways and wouldn't have to start for a few years.

sorry guy but 1st rounders are precious..

Sorry guy, this is not the spot to draft a "developemental prospect"...We need immediate contributors...I'd think Bobby '06, Spencer '07, may contribute more this upcoming season, But If we draft a third #1 that can't come in and be our starting #2 receiver...I would never waste the pick...We have one developemental prospect in Stanback, not looking for another.

CB- will be instant nickle starter.
RB- will be instant change of pace back.

you're forgetting that all WRs are developmental

even the great Calvin Johnson from last season made no immediate impact for the Lions. Rarely if ever do WRs come in their rookie year and light the world on fire. They all take at least a few years to develop, even if selected in the top 10.

He would however make an immediate impact on special teams and that obviously can't be over looked.

Johnson was a contract holdout and was injured...

Malcolm Kelly would be an immediate starter in this league...probably Sweed, and Jackson too...they are established pro style route runners...

Thomas or Hardy are not.

pass...............

Caldwell,Royal,Doucet,Manningham are much better selections in round 2 or 3.

they would only be immediate starters if

the team that selects them have absolutely nobody at WR. Those guys would never crack our starting lineup this season, absolutely no way.

BTW, just because they would start for a certain team doesn't mean they would be productive. Learning curve is very great at the WR position in the NFL.

LOL>..usually that's why you chose a player....

the team that selects them have absolutely nobody at WR.

LOL...that's why they will be playing and starting in Buffalo, Tennessee, and San Francisco. possibly Carolina, Philly, Washington, among others.

Those guys would never crack our starting lineup this season, absolutely no way.

Malcolm Kelly is better than Crayton, Hurd, Austin, Stanback, and an unhealthy Glenn right now.

Kelly isn't better than Crayton

that just simply is not true. Maybe in time he'll be an all-pro, but no way is he better than Crayton right now, you should know better than make a statement like that boyz.

If we drafted Kelly, he'd be our 3rd WR at best, I wouldn't rule out even Hurd or Stanback playing ahead of him.

funny....but you wanna draft Thomas in round 1 ?

Kelly is bigger, faster, stronger, than Crayton...best hands in the draft....so yeah...I believe it would be Crayton playing the slot...Crayton is NOT a #2 receiver in this league...never will be.

If Kelly can't beat out:

Crayton
Hurd
Stanback

I wouldn't draft him either.And he's 10x's better than Thomas.

Kelly wouldn't start for us this year

absolutely no way that would happen. Also, he's not 10 times better than Thomas. I think Thomas is the best WR in the draft, much more explosive than Kelly.

I'll have to agree with you Boyz

I don't really care for much of these WRs, especially in the first round, but I'm coming around to Kelly.

I keep preaching Crayton is a good #3 only, but not a #2. He is no threat which we need.

I think Kelly could beat out Crayton also.

That article on JJ was over the top

even for Spags.  We all wish things would have turned out differently but Spags gets a little deep in analyzing JJ's emotions saying how the evil Cowboy empire crushed his spirit - WTF?  The reality is, fans of football teams want production and aren't too concerned with the players feelings.  This may sound harsh but if somebody wanted to pay me millions of dollars and didn't care about my emotions, I think I could live with that.  Give me a break.

he said it was Parcells and its true

I agree with Spags, I think Parcells ruined him in Dallas. I think the change of scenry in Seattle will be just what the doctor ordered for him.

I look for big numbers from him if he can forget about what happened in Dallas and run the way he did his rookie year.

I totally agree king

I have been a JJ fan, but the bottom line is production, and he simply failed.  All the discussion as to why he failed is just hot-air.

If it was all Parcells fault

then why did JJ have his worst season ever under Wade?  I realize it is a tough business but sooner or later you have to produce.  What if he stinks it up in Seattle?  Then he'll blame the weather?  Believe me, I wish he could have made it here as much as anyone but I'm just getting so tired of all of his excuses.

Oh look who is being mentioned now

for us in the first round. Flowers and now King. I do agree King would be a reach at 28 and would be a better 2nd round pick. Flowers may not be such a reach at 28. I could live with that pick.

For those that don't know

Pravda means "Truth".  I believe it was the official state newspaper during the Soviet era, or if not, it was close to it.  Notorious for printing untrue things, but of the more normal variety about how the USSR was doing better than the USA.  Maybe the name got sold off, or maybe it was this crazy all the time.
