KEVIN JONES OUT IN MOTOWN?
Posted by Mike Florio on March 13, 2008, 3:32 p.m.
We recently heard a rumor that, if the Lions had signed running back Julius Jones, running back Kevin Jones would have been cut. We’ve now been told that Kevin Jones is telling teammates that he has been released.
The rumor/report is not yet confirmed. Stay tuned.
Later reported :
LIONS ANNOUNCE RELEASE OF EDWARDS, JONES
Posted by Mike Florio on March 13, 2008, 5:38 p.m.
The Detroit Lions have formally announced their decision to part ways with defensive end Kalimba Edwards and running back Kevin Jones."With the off-season program beginning next week and with our draft preparation intensifying, we decided this was the right time to make these two roster moves," coach Rod Marinelli said in a release. "While there are always a number of factors that go into this type of decision, we do believe these moves bring clarity to our roster and also eliminate some uncertainty heading into the draft that would have otherwise existed."
As to the release of Jones, however, the move potentially jeopardizes the team’s ability to land a running back in the draft, especially if it prompts a team picked below the Lions in round one to trade up in front of them to get a guy who might otherwise have been on the board when the Lions picked.
Then again, maybe the Lions wants other teams to think they’re going running back in round one. Of course, it’s hard for us to infer that the Lions are attempting to pull off a Vulcan mind trick, given that their recent history has essentially been a Klingon clusterf–k.

thats interesting because Parcells said
Jones was going to be our 1st rd pick in 2004 instead of Steven Jackson if Buffalo doesn't make that trade with us.
He's a china doll so I'd only be interested in him at the vet minimum salary.

Coming out of V Tech.....Jones was #1 RB.........
Even more talented than Steven Jackson coming out....His only issue at the time was coming off a ankle injury while in college..If this dude is healthy, he's a very gifted runner, and playing a part time, complimentary role would greatly reduce the wear and tear on him...If he can come affordable, would be an ideal back here in Dallas...better than any other back that was/is available in free agency...
I'd take 'em for sure...

What timing, Boyz! Just left that site...
... Kevin Jones is still young, but will his foot ever be the same again? Will it ever fully heal?
If he's expected to be recovered by TC, maybe sign him to a minimum deal and draft a RB with one of our two first rounders?
So many questions...
Def da silly season.

No thanks
Kevin Jones looks like he should still be playing on Friday nights...
if he'd come cheap, I mean really cheap, I'd think about it.

PFT= pure fruit technologies
Problem with the link Boyz...
We’ve gotten confirmation from another source that running back Kevin Jones has been informed by the Detroit Lions that he will be released.
It’s not known whether the move has been made official.
Jones was a first-round pick of the Lions in 2004. A serious foot injury suffered during the 2006 season marred much of the 2007 campaign for him, and we’re told that there was concern that he might not be healthy for the start of the 2007 regular season.
The only other running backs currently on the roster are Brian Calhoun, Aveion Cason, and Tatum Bell.

The kid is a china doll, would stay away from him.
Hopefully Detroit will make a run and Shawn Alexander when he's cut.
Not so good news on my pet project..
NFL Network's Mike Mayock reports that Oregon RB Jonathan Stewart may need surgery on his big toe. The procedure would keep him out four to six months.
Stewart suffered a big toe injury in November and didn't miss any games. He also ran the forty at the Combine, but performed no shuttle or cone drills. In the meantime, he had MRIs done and doctors recommended he undergo surgery. Individual teams will evaluate whether surgery is required. Expected to be a first-round pick, his stock will fall dramatically with any team who doesn't medically clear him.

Maybe he'll drop a bit right to number 22, that would be nice!!!!!!!!!

He'd drop out of the first round, I think
I know he's a top prospect, but that's a pretty serious injury. 6 months means he wouldn't be ready to start the season, and missing TC would be bad for a rookie. They may not be comparable players or injuries, but Michael Bush fell all the way to the 4th last year. We need a guy who can actually play, but if he falls out of the first round, a play for Stewart on the cheap would be wise.

Stewart might be a china doll as well
he had durability concerns at Oregon and now this, maybe we should stay away from this kid.

No to Stewart
Jones is a gifted man at the running back position but again, he is always injured. If we could get him at a reasonable price then bring him in. As for Stewart, I would not want him over any of the other first round talents. Stewart is a physical back but his 40 time is misleading. He has decent straight line speed but his acceleration off the line is terrible.
by Romo9 on Mar 13, 2008 6:38 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
You clearly haven't watched him play
Misleading!!!
Mcfadden times/splits
40 Yrd Dash: 4.33
20 Yrd Dash: 2.53
10 Yrd Dash: 1.50
Mendenhall
40 Yrd Dash: 4.41
20 Yrd Dash: 2.56
10 Yrd Dash: 1.53
Stewart
40 Yrd Dash: 4.46
20 Yrd Dash: 2.54
10 Yrd Dash: 1.46
Here are the top three backs in the draft, I think everyone will agree with that. Now, who has the fastest first ten yard split, and is second by 1/100th at the second twenty yard split, and remember its now known the kid was injured since november and may need surgery, a player who weighs 235lbs, tied in the broad jump with mcfadden at 10.08, out jumped mcfadden by three and a half inches in the vertical at 36.5 inches and being three and a half inches shorter than Mcfadden and benched 225lbs, 28 times. Stewarts ten and twenty yard splits and his ability to broad jump 10'08" and a vertical of 36.5", all measureables of burst and power. Yeah, I'll be hoping he drops to 22. There is nothing misleading about Stewart, he's built to play in the NFL, thee best overall back in this draft.
by Deke on Mar 13, 2008 7:36 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
Romo is right Deke, Stewart doesn't have
a 2nd gear. Sure, he has a great burst through the LOS, but he doesn't have the acceleration to run away from DBs.
He's fast, he's quick, but no 2nd gear.
by Terry on Mar 13, 2008 7:42 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
I dont see any defensive backs catching him
infact he's pulling away from them, Is this the second gear you say he doesn't have.

Pick up a vet RB & draft Stewart @ 22...
That would give the rookie some time to rehab and still give us an experienced backup.
The only question would be, who?

Update of Stewart
STEWART GETS SURGERY
In a draft that has plenty of tailbacks, one of them has a question mark sprouting from his shoes.
According to Adam Schefter of NFL Network, Oregon running back Jonathan Strewart had surgery on Wednesday to repair a fracture in his foot.
As a result, Stewart will be out for four months, and will miss his Pro Day workout. The goal in having the surgery now was to ensure that Stewart would be ready for the start of training camp.
Stewart had the injury in February, when he ran the 40-yard dash in 4.45 seconds at the Scouting Combine. He also churned out a 36-inch vertical jump.
The situation has drawn comparisons to Vikings running back Adrian Peterson, whose broken collarbone arguably prompted a mini-slide to No. 7 in the 2007 draft. But most running backs don’t use their collarbones to, you know, run.

I think either Detroit,Arizona or houston will select him. before twenty two.

So do I
But I'd consider taking your signature's suggestion if the package requested wasn't enormous. I Love me some Jonathan Stewart. And for those who rail on his 40 time; he doesn't need 50 yard gains to keep me happy. Our offense is potent enough that we don't need to rely on those. If he can get the 10-15 yard runs more frequently than McFadden or Mendenhall, as it appears he is capable of, I'm quite pleased with him.
by BudLight on Mar 13, 2008 8:33 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
Stewart will be there at #28
our Priority is CB.....let's not lose focus here...
If DRC or Jenkins are there at #22...I'd rather go that route....not looking to draft a guy on you tube highlights alone...damaged goods...as of today...I'd love to take him after pick #22....Take a CB...then maybe trade up if you think there is worries of him getting picked up...Once he gets past Dallas...I can see him sliding nicely to us at 28.
by BoyzRback07 on Mar 13, 2008 8:49 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
Focus!!
you have us trading everything but the kitchen sink so far, either for Hall, for Williams, for who knows who else, I cant keep track of all these off the wall trades you have going, Stewart wont make it past Houston at 18, a fractured bone is nothing, we're not talking about ligaments or tendons, and for what the kid did a the combine with the injury, his injury isn't a big deal.
It's all going to depend what happens before 22, if corners start flying off the board early , Dallas might be smart to move down, which is what I think will probably happen, pick up an early extra second and third round pick.
by Deke on Mar 13, 2008 9:05 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
if its a lis franc fracture it is a big deal Deke
thats something that the article didn't specify.

its a turf toe injury
by Deke on Mar 13, 2008 10:10 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
lol...too funny....the kitchen sink..eh'
a fractured bone is nothing, we're not talking about ligaments or tendons, and for what the kid did a the combine with the injury, his injury isn't a big deal.
Are you friggin' serious ?????????
tendons and ligaments can be repaired, in some cases at better than original strength...
I have personally experienced the SAME exact fracture as Stewart...Turf toe...it's a stress fracture, extremely painful, and nothing but a miracle will completely eliminate the problem. These don't heal right, a complete facture or break would be better...this is a weakness in the bone, and can flare up , over and over....
I'm sure they may have used screws, and possibly bone graphs to hopefully bond and adhere the the affected area (think Kevin Jones)...but there is never a sure cure, ask Deion Sanders how it shortens a career, he had several operations to repair his toe.....In fact my toe still hurts 20 years later..Of course medicine has evolved a bit since i was injured...but it's worse than you think ....I was able to walk, run, sprint no problem...it's when you cut, plant, spin, and propel yourself is when it's agonizing pain....This is why he didn't do the drills at the combine...I'm not saying he won't have a productive career, but this surely puts enough doubts in owners shelling out millions of dollars......He still may go to Houston...your right...but don't think for a minute that this isn't a "big deal" and won't affect his status...Teams won't even be able to work him out...you'll see..Why do you think Glenn Dorsey is beginning to stumble....He had a factured leg TWO years ago and teams are starting to look away from HIM...Many considered the best player in the draft.....
If the top 3 CB's, top 3 WR's, and Felix Jones are not available at #22....THEN...I would consider Stewart....even then I know he'll slide farther....

Moreso Zona, Deke... check it -
The Houston Texans signed former Tennessee Titans halfback Chris Brown on Thursday.
Brown, 26, is being brought in to work with starting halfback Ahman Green in an attempt to turn around the Texans' running attack. What appealed to Gary Kubiak and new assistant head coach Alex Gibbs was Brown's style of running. His style is to make one crisp cut and then try to break a long gain.
http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/s...
Houston might not feel as forced to draft a running back with their first rounder now that they've added Brown, plus the fact that this'll be a RB-heavy draft. Corner is a good possiblity with their 1st round selection after this signing.
Does Detroit wanna deal with another RB (Jonathan Stewart) with a foot injury -- even though it's probably not serious. You know that has to be going through their minds. They're also trying to improve their O-line and they just lost some starters on defense.
Now Arizona is where I could see Stewart landing mainly because HC-Ken Whisenhunt is attempting to transform their O into more of an inside, between-the-tackles style of running team... and Edgerrin James has too much tread on his tires and will be making too much money. That's where I could see Stewart landing, but if Rashard Mendenhall's still available... I gotta say that da Cards go with the healthy RB at the moment -- and that would give us a better chance to land Stewart.
A lot can still happen between now and the draft and it continues to get interesting.
Your dream of Stewart wearing the star could still come true. That would be cool... esp if his foot completely heals and the injury is not career-threatening.
Just my worthless commentary and analysis.

I agree silver...Arizona is the place for him...
They aren't in dire need for an immediate starter, plus i forgot about the Houston pick up.......Thay have(Edge, Arrington, etc.) they can slowly work him into the mix...would be a nice choice for them...

One league source agrees with you, Deke...
On the surface, Oregon running back Jonathan Stewart’s surgery to repair a broken bone in his foot has raised red flags. But some league insiders appreciate the fact that Stewart addressed the situation now, even though it puts his short-term financial interests at risk.
"It’s not a real big deal," said one league source. "I don’t think he gets out of round one. He’s simply too talented. It’s not really, in my opinion, any different than Heath Miller having surgery to repair a sports hernia before the draft.
"I actually think it’s responsible and somewhat honorable that he had it fixed now. He did it so he’d be ready for camp at the expense of his draft stock. A lot of players would not have done that. I think it reflects positively on the kid and I don’t think teams will hold it against him. He’s too good. The Bills drafted Willis McGahee in round one, and Stewart is every bit as good with a much less serious injury."
