Julius Jones gets some love
ESPN predicts that Julius Jones will be one of the most productive free agent signings this year.
Who's going to be the most productive free agent? Seattle running back Julius Jones. He got brushed aside in Dallas because of Marion Barber. But Jones is walking into a good situation in Seattle. He'll take the place of Shaun Alexander and be paired with Maurice Morris in a backfield that will turn out to be one of the best in the league. Jones was a 1,000-yard rusher in 2006 and will return to that level. He also will be a major contributor as a receiver out of the backfield. Jones caught 35 passes in 2005, but the Cowboys forgot about his receiving skills the last two seasons, something the Seahawks won't.

Mario Manningham was on everybody’s radar as one of the top picks at receiver in the 2008 draft. Then he ran at the combine and one of his most marketable skills – his speed – seemed to be in question. Matt Mosley over at Hashmarks reports that Manningham ran like everybody thought he would at his Pro Day.
Meanwhile, Michigan receiver Mario Manningham took a leap forward after a strong performance at Pro Day on Friday. After posting a pedestrian 4.59 40-yard dash time at the combine, Manningham bounced back with a 4.38 in Ann Arbor. Another scout I just talked to clocked him at 4.42 but that's close enough not to matter that much. The fact that Manningham had run a 4.6 during one of his turns in Indianapolis really scared a lot of teams. But he was much more impressive on familiar turf.
Manningham scored almost a TD a game while at Michigan and a lot of those were long-range jobs. He’s got the ability to stretch the field, something Dallas is looking for and had an accomplished career against big-time competition. I still don’t think Dallas will take a WR in the first round, but if all the corners they want are gone they might go in that direction if they don’t trade down. I’m keeping Manningham on the radar for the time being.

Speaking of WR’s, one that a lot of us thought the Cowboys might pursue, free agent DJ Hackett, has signed with the Panthers.
Hat tip to sduncan24 for the news.

SI.com has a list of ‘risers’ and ‘sliders’ for the 2008 draft.
A couple of names that might interest the Cowboys.
Risers:
Aqib Talib, CB -- Kansas
He was another Big 12 cornerback who impressed with his speed this week. His 40 time of 4.41 was much better than his combine clockings, which ranged in the low 4.5 area. Talib twice answered questions about his speed (pro day and the combine) and is moving up draft boards.
Sliders:
Jonathan Stewart, RB -- Oregon
He underwent surgery last week to correct a turf toe injury suffered in November. He was able to play through the pain and even competed at the combine. Sources say Stewart knew the injury was a problem when he decided to enter the draft in January. He'll be sidelined the next four months and is likely to slip into the second round.

A mock draft from Pete Prisco.
22. Dallas Cowboys (from Cleveland)
DeSean Jackson, WR, California: Terrell Owens is getting up in years, and Jackson will help the return game until he gets into the lineup.28. Dallas Cowboys
Felix Jones, RB, Arkansas: The Cowboys add a speed back to go with Marion Barber. Jones put up some amazing yards-per-carry numbers at Arkansas.

I know...
... a lot of people here are down on Manningham, but I expected him to rebound with his real speed during Michigan's Pro Day.
And what Grizz said is one of the main reasons I expect him to do well as a pro ball player... and that's the fact that he played against the top level of competition, which should prepare him for the NFL.
Not to mention the Wolverines' pro-style offense surrounded by great college players like QB-Chad Henne, RB-Mike Hart, other starting WR-Adrian Arrington, and OT-Jake Long.
Common Mario, prove me right... just not on a team in the NFC.

why Prisco is a moron
he has us passing on Mendenhall and lasting the whole way to the Chargers at #27.
Yeah, we're goin' take Jackson over Mendenhall...what an idiot.

Not only that but..
he has us bypassing our biggest need (corner) altogether in the 1st. While good RB's can be found in the later rounds, that's rarely the case when it comes to corners.

Jackson better talent at WR, than Menden at RB...
I would do the same thing if those two are there.
Jackson and Jones would be a gold mine draft...
DRC and Jones would be the only better scenario.

DRC and Jackson
I'd buy season tickets for the new stadium.

I seriously doubt Jackson has first rd grade
from many teams whereas Mendenhall is a top 15 player on most boards.
Mendenhall is feature back material but Jackson is clearly a #2 receiver at best.
Don't understand your reasoning how Jackson is better.

He is a top 10 player on many team boards..
he is a proven deep threat weapon, one of the best college return men of all time, fastest WR in the draft, has proved himself to have great hands, and body control, big play ability, over a three year college career... Is Steve Smith and Marvin Harrison #2 WR's ???? .... I don't think so...
Trust me....IF Desean Jackson is there at #22...and DRC, McKelvin have already been chosen...There is no doubt Desean Jackson is one of the "RUMORED" 21 players on the Cowboys list, and would be given serious consideration.. He will automatically become one of thee best return man in the NFL.Provide Dallas with a speed receiver they desperately NEED.
should I go om ?

I disagree obviously
He's no where in the same league as Harrison or Smith, thats halarious.
He's a 2nd round talent at best and would be a super reach if taken in the top half of the first rd.
I'd draft Thomas, Kelly, Sweed, and Manningham over Jackson. He's another Ted Ginn, no better.
by Terry on Mar 17, 2008 9:26 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
lol...and Ginn was 9th overall pick ?...ur point
He had a much more productive college career than both Harrison and Smith...2 time ALL American WR and former ALL American Return man....now what ??
2nd round talent at best ???
thank god your not an nfl personel guy..you'd be on food stamps and welfare right now.
lol....funny how Manningham is now on your list.
oh...btw Terry...who did you chose for Tampa's pick on Fargo's draft ? really interested to here that pick.

lol..I'm pretty confident I'd build a quality
team much better and faster than you ever could. You're the one who would have your team in cap hell for years signing and trading for every Tom, Dick and Harry that becomes available. Maybe you should work for Danny Boy Synder, you guys think alike.

Terry.....or should I say Mayock Jr.
really I don't even know why I answer your non sense...to be quite frank..Following your comments for the past few months i've come to the conclusion you know absolutely nothing about any of these players, yet I can give you a run down and objective analysis on any player eligible for the draft........You change your mind on guys like babies change diapers...
lol..I'm pretty confident I'd build a quality (none / 0)
team much better and faster than you ever could.
cap hell my azz......I can produce a team of all pro's and actually save money...I'd love for you to go back 5 months and pull out any post of mine that would hamper our cap in any way possible.....you will not find one. I realize you like to type out of your azz, but if your going ot make foolish staements....be able to back it up..
That's the funniest thing i ever heard there..I have more knowledge and experience evaluating talent than you ever will..
Your own self proclaimed best draft analyst Mike Mayock has Talib and Jenkins in his top 5...Has DeSean Jackson rated higher than Kelly and Manningham...yet your expertise sez otherwise...all second rounders at best....I assure you all 4 of those players will be 1st rounders...go find a hobby or something....cuz your lacking big time trying to be Mayock's lil flunky.

just because these players will be first rounders
doesn't mean they should be first rounders.
Go ahead and believe your BS, thats fine, I know better...that your a draft guru in your own mind. lol

Good to hear about Manningham
This should push him back into the first round. I simply can't figure out how the discrepancy in times between two surfaces was that huge, though.
by BudLight on Mar 17, 2008 3:57 PM CDT reply actions 0 recs
To me, he looked nervous at the combine...
... not trying to make excuses, but to me it was rather obvious.
Then again, maybe it was just me that noticed it.
by kcbrett5 on Mar 17, 2008 3:59 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
he looked fat and out of shape, unprepared.......
which is the main reason he failed at combine...obviously "trained" for his pro day..combine is exact speed...pro day is stop watches which can easily vary one to another hence 4.38 to 4.42...I had reports of other scouts at his pro day that still had him in the 4.5+ range....He is no speed demon..trust.

Whatever the reason sb5
Everyone knew he couldn't be that slow like his combine time. Good to see he showed it at his Pro Day. Almost to a man scouts raved about his speed and burst and his ability to separate, that's why he has so many long catches in his Michigan career. He's got plenty of speed to stretch the field in the NFL. Don't be fooled.

I have a strange feeling
Anyone else have a feeling that we will see Julius Jones in a pivotal game next season?
by Carl Shelton (GloryDayz88) on Mar 17, 2008 6:47 PM CDT reply actions 0 recs
I think he'll have a career year next season
hopefully, he won't kill us next season when we play them and you know he'll really to run all over us.
by Terry on Mar 17, 2008 6:50 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
just curious...
as to what you see that makes you think he will have a good year?
by nonotmenever on Mar 18, 2008 9:02 AM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
because he's a very talented back who just needs
a change of scenery. He got caught up in Parcells head games and the organization's love affair with MB3 so a fresh and new beginning is all he needs.
The kid has talent, there is no question about that.
by Terry on Mar 18, 2008 9:46 AM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
Then what happened this year?
He was given every opportunity, after Parcells was gone, and couldn't do ANYTHING. He is a solid #2, that's all.
by ChrisRichey on Mar 18, 2008 1:03 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
like I said, he got caught up
in the MB3 love affair and tried to run like him but thats not his style. He'll have a clean slate in Seattle and will do well.

Good Point on JJ
I've never seen a tailback shoestring tackled by a single finger or miss such ridiculous cutback lanes, but JJ can do some good catching the ball in the flats. I always wondered if he would have been a better 3rd down misdirection/swing pass back than Barber.
by jmangell0830 on Mar 17, 2008 10:56 PM CDT reply actions 0 recs
I think Barber is a better receiver
I remember too many times Jujo dropped those dump off passes.
I hope he does well, but I'm not sure he'll be any better than he was in his second year. BP programmed him to be a robot :)

J. Stewart
I went to Oregon and follow their football program pretty closely. Jonathon Stewart is steady, but that offense succeeded only with a healthy Dennis Dixon. Most of Stewart's best runs were from shotgun draws. He's a big back for a spread offense, so if he slips he could be a nice pickup for Dallas' high scoring offense.
The more intriguing RBs to me other than Stewart are Ray Rice and Rashard Mendenhall. Mendenhall won't be around most likely, but we can get Ray Rice if we somehow get up in the top of the 2nd.
Malcolm Kelly will be a stud WR. Let's pick him up at #22 if we can. Best corner at #28 or trade down to 2nd for Rice. No Talib!
by Aaron Novinger on Mar 18, 2008 10:51 AM CDT reply actions 0 recs
Kelly will more than likely slide out of the 1st
because he hasn't worked out at the combine or his pro day. That will hurt him a lot.
I agree that Mendenhall should be the pick if available, that kid is the real deal.
I'm also on the "no Talib" bandwagon. Huge bust potential.
by Terry on Mar 18, 2008 3:44 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
Mendenhall won't be there at 22
I'd rather get Ray Rice in the second.
And for the record, Aqib Talib's bandwagon doesn't need you, it's plenty full.
