DeAngelo Hall agrees to terms with the Raiders; random Cowboys notes
DeAngelo Hall has agreed to a seven year, $70 million contract with the Raiders which finalizes his trade from Atlanta to Oakland.
Atlanta Falcons cornerback DeAngelo Hall says he will finalize a contract with Oakland by Thursday morning, allowing the trade sending him to the Raiders to be completed.
A source told ESPN's Chris Mortensen that the deal is for seven years and worth $70 million. The amount of guaranteed money and bonuses in the contract have not been finalized.
This is significant to the Cowboys for two reasons: it puts to rest all of the rumors that abounded about the Cowboys making a trade for Hall, and it is another piece of the bargaining chips Terence Newman will have for his contract renewal.
First let me say that I am ecstatic Hall is going away to NFL purgatory, otherwise known as Oakland. I think that he is one of the most overrated players in the league and Al Davis way overspent to get a flashy player who gets beat way too often. Of all the rumors the Cowboys have been involved with so far this offseason, this was the one I wished the most to not come true.
The recent large contracts mediocre cornerbacks have been getting the past two years can only make Jerry Jones cringe. There is no way the Cowboys will let Newman go but it will take a hefty sum to keep him. Newman is a better all around player than either of the corners getting signed and in my opinion is better than Asante Samuel, a corner who has gaudy numbers but is not always successful in the risks he takes. Newman is safe and rarely gives up the big play and although he is turning 30 he still has a good number of playing years ahead of him.

JJT has an interesting blurb in this week's Q & A:
The Cowboys will have to definitely fix their special teams because Keith Davis is the man who gave the unit attitude. Others like Kevin Burnett or Deon Anderson can take his role, but they have to make it happen. As for [Special Teams coach Bruce Read], he didn't have a great year and some players questioned his coaching. I would say it's a situation that needs to be watched closely during the season.
If the Cowboys aren't able to step up the play of the special teams this year, getting to the Super Bowl will be nearly impossible no matter how well Tony Romo plays or how much the defense improves.

Rick Gosselin says that good teams take the cheap route in free agency.

Also, make sure you guys stop over to The Fifth Down and show how much support you can give to Blogging The Boys. This is a nice way to prove how great a job Grizz does for us over here, as well as show up those Giants fans.

so because Samuel
played on the Pats and Hall didn't you are giving the edge to Samuel?
Really? Do you really want to say that?
By the way, Hall is only 24 and a beast at CB in the league, that's the going rate for those types of CBs...

DeAngelo Hall is the most overrated CB
Or at least whenever I watched him. I only got to see the nationally televised games but everytime I watched the Falcons all I saw was Hall getting burned.

I'm with you Brandon
He is totally overrated, I watch Atlanta games a lot becasue I live there, and he gets beat much too often to be an elite-level CB. A lot of NFL people will tell you he thinks he's better than he actually is.

seems like most of his reputation
came from that game against t.o. on monday night when he was with the eagles. that's the best game i've seen him play. of course, once t.o. got with the cowboys he burned him badly. which is when the spittlegate incident took place.

His meltdown against Carolina
Didn't help him. Steve Smith got in his head and took him out of his game. He got 2 personal fouls, then went and yelled at the head coach on the sideline. What a bonehead. Not to mention his close friendship with Vick.

He does remind me of Samuel...
...in that it seems to be his instinct to play overagressively. Samuel had a good coach who limited him in that, Hall obviously didn't get or didn't listen to that coaching. He has the raw talent (speed), and is still young enough to be coached. Oakland's secondary is decen and I could seem him improving there.
Still, I'm exceedingly happy the Cowboys didn't get him. From the locker room aspect, to him probably not wanting to prevent the deep pass first, to him being a general me-first thug, I am glad he's not here.

It is the Falcons
A lot of breakdowns in that secondary and the coaching has been atrocious there. But, everyone gets burned occasionally, even Newman.
They are both on par stats wise, and yet Newman is not overrated but Hall is. Interesting.

Interceptions, passes defensed and tackles
Do not show if Newman got beat as much as Hall did. Stats for a corner are misleading sometimes.

he's still a top talent
I'll steal this from another blogger on another blog, his value has dropped because of his frustration on a team that is in an absolute mess.
Just for my information, where you against TO coming here?

That is a completely different issue.
The reason I was against Hall coming here was not just because of his attitude. I truly believe that he is not worth the money that he wanted, and GOT from the league's biggest nimcompoop.
I never questioned TO's ability to play when he first came here.

oh, and
Instead of getting beat by Steve Smith twice a year, now Hall will get beat by Chris Chambers and Dwayne Bowe twice a year.

I'm glad T.O. spit in his face!
Rumors about Hall coming here did nothing but scare me. He's waaaay too much mouth and complaining for the locker room, not to mention his FAT contract. I'd take the small hope for Pacman any day.

He isn't the MOST overated CB in the league
but after getting a 70 mil. deal he is up there. He is a decent first corner but he isn't the next coming of Deion Sanders. Hall is good, not great, but certainly starter worthy. He has all the talent one could hope for and he is still only 26. Personally, I don't believe he is worth that contract and I surely don't think he is as good as Newman. Newman does the #1 job of a CB better than any other CB in the league, shuts down the opposition, his lack of picks is merely a distant second. I would take him over Samuel or Hall.

He'll be good across...
...from Asomugha. Now what would be bad for the Raiders (or fitting, depending on your outlook) is if they let Asomugha walk next year since they already have their No. 1 CB.

OVERRATED!
What happens everytime Hall has to cover an elite WR?
He is a staple on the highlight tapes of T.O., Steve Smith, and Chad Johnson, and thats just off the top of my head.
And Steve Smith just owns him. Steve Smith could go to D. Hall's house, spank his kids and hop in bed with his wife. T.O. could spit in his face. Oh... wait...
It's not even close. I dont want him and Im mad he just jacked up the price for us to keep Newman.
And what kind of man let's another man spit in his face? And then snitch about it? That's weak. What do you think would have happened if he spit in T.O.'s face? That's why Bill Romanowski spit in JJ Stokes' face instead of T.O.'s back in the day. He Knew what time it was.
Cowards who dont fight back dont deserve a star on their helmet.

Too much indeed
$10 mill a year is a hefty price to pay for Hall. Although I agree that he is not worth that much, I do think he is in the top tier of CBs in the league. He gets beat more than Newman but he also makes more big plays than Newman. I guess you have to pick your poison. I was on the other side of the fence about this player. I was in favor of the Cowboys trading for Hall but seeing the price tag the Raiders have now paid, I would definately have not wanted him at that 10 mill a year price tag.

Really glad we didn't get Hall
The most overrated player in the league by far and away. He's a good, solid CB, but not even close to being as great as he thinks he is.
Also, hate his attitude and disposition. Perfect fit for Oakland where all the jerks end up sooner or later.

JJT sums up Hall the best
Q: Since Oakland is only offering up a second-round pick, why don't we throw one of our first-round picks for DeAngelo Hall? He is still young and is a great corner.
John Popadak II, Youngstown, Ohio
TAYLOR: First, I would never call DeAngelo Hall a great corner. If he were great, then the Falcons would lock him up considering his age. He's a good player who thinks he is great. It's OK to be great and think you're great, but it scares me when a good player thinks he's great. I certainly wouldn't give him a contract that makes him one of the game's highest-paid players. With his apparent selfish attitude, that could lead to disaster.
