The rumor that won't die
The Randy Moss to Dallas rumor is the rumor that just won’t die. Yesterday, I begged Brandon not to post about Moss. Now, here I am posting about Moss. I’m a huge hypocrite. But I ran across speculation in the LA Times:
There is widespread speculation about which franchises might compete for his service, among them Dallas, Green Bay, Indianapolis...
{snip}
It's generally believed the Cowboys could make salary-cap room for Moss by reworking some existing deals, and possibly postponing his big payday until 2010, which will be uncapped if team owners and the players' union fail to negotiate an extension to the collective bargaining agreement.
The notion of Terrell Owens on one side and Moss on the other would certainly strike fear in the hearts of opposing defensive coordinators.
Cowboys - Owner Jerry Jones is rich, so that’s not an issue. And Tony Romo is a Pro Bowl quarterback, so that would work, too. Don’t be surprised if Dallas puts on the full-court press. Jones already is on record saying he wants to make a splash this offseason, and the Cowboys thus far have been surprisingly quiet, beyond re-signing lineman Flozell Adams.
Please someone sign this guy quick.

Michael Turner ended up in Atlanta.
Hat tip to CowboyBawler4 for the news.
A cornerback I kind of had my eye on was Randall Gay. I wasn’t sure what kind of money he would command but I thought maybe the Cowboys would take a look. They never did and Gay just signed with the Saints.
It’s become obvious the Cowboys are going to depend on the draft for at least one CB. In the first round Leodis McKelvin, Mike Jenkins, DRC and Aqib Talib are possibilities to be drafted. Now it just depends on who will be available once the Cowboys get on the clock, unless Dallas decides to trade up. There’s also some other guys like Antoine Cason and Justin King who could be had a little later in the draft.
Seriously, what were the Texans thinking when they signed Jacques Reeves to a $20 million contract?

Every so often in the run-up to the draft I’ll be posting mock drafts that I find across the Net. It doesn’t mean I endorse the picks in the draft, I just put them up for discussion. This one from The Football Expert has a twist:
- Dallas Cowboys (from CLE) – Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie, Tennessee St.
DRC may have secured himself being drafted in the first round after a great combine, where he ran a 4.33 40 and measured easily over 6-1. He has the size and speed that teams want in their CBs. His knack has always been his level of competition, but that is no more a worry, DRC is for real and the Cowboys would be thrilled to have him. Anthony Henry is getting older and may possibly move to safety, creating an opening opposite Terence Newman. RB Felix Jones would be another option.
- Dallas Cowboys – James Hardy, WR, Indiana
Unless the Cowboys shock the world and pick up Randy Moss, the Cowboys look to be in need of a young receiver. Mario Manningham looked to be the guy, but after a poor combine, his stock has taken a hit. However, Hardy's stock has benefited with a great combo. He measured in at 6-6, and ran a solid 4.48 40. He always creates a mismatch and should be a fun target for Tony Romo.
DRC, as everyone knows, I like, but I hadn’t seen James Hardy’s name for us anywhere. He looked good at the combine and is a tall guy, but is it a reach at #28?

Interesting Moss stuff
I'd like to see how Dallas could free up enough cap room for Moss, but that's at least the first article I've seen addressing the cap issue when discussing the possibility. Tread lightly, Jerrah...we have a lot of upcoming salary obligations and draft picks to sign...not to mention no long-term deals for MB3 or Canty.
Can Roy Williams renegotiate his salary to $0? I keed, sort of.

not too complicated, there will be no salary cap
in 2010 if the players and teams can't negotiate a new collective bargaining agreement which would include a cap. Under the current agreement, there is no cap after 2009.

INCORRECT.....CBA runs through 2012 (so far)
The current CBA runs through 2012.
2012 is an Uncapped year, 2008 – 2011 are Capped years.
There is an OPTION for either the NFLPA or the NFL management council to void 2011 and 2012. Making 2010 the "Final League Year" and thus Uncapped. This option expires November 8, 2008.
There is a second OPTION to void 2012. Making 2011 an Uncapped year. This option expires November 8, 2009.
As of today, neither of these options have been exercised. The newspaper is WRONG.
I posted on this issue yesterday.

Maybe here
Jones did not give the Cowboys' opinion of the deal. Several owners, however, such as Denver's Pat Bowlen and New England's Robert Kraft, have expressed dissatisfaction.
Twenty-four of 32 votes would be needed to keep the collective bargaining agreement in place.
http://www.dallasnews.com/sharedcont...
If the owners opt out, the current structure will stay in place through 2010; 2011 would be an uncapped season. NFLPA president Gene Upshaw has said once there is an uncapped year, a salary cap would never return
2011 could very well be an uncapped year.

IMO, drafting any WR in the 1st rd is a reach
I honestly think that aren't any WRs in this draft worth drafting in the 1st rd. I think Devin Thmas is the best WR available and he should be a high 2nd rd pick.
There will be much better players on the board in the 1st rd when we're drafting so I pray we don't reach for one of these overrated WRs like Sweed, Manningham, Doucet and Jackson.

Sweed, Kelly are locks for the first (top 24)..Desean Jackson as well should be...Hardy possible, as well as Thomas.

Oh....1 season makes a career 4 WR now...
You should know Terry that WR is certainly not a position to make immediate impacts on a teams offense...aside from CB, it's probably one of the hardest to master.Ginn...has all the talent in the world...raw, and over drafted, but in no means a bust..give him another year, before passing judgement.....Meachem, well...he was over rated, i agree...Chad Jackson, well...UF receivers never do well..lol..although in his defense, tough to get pt behind Moss,Welker,Stallworth,Gafney,Washington...I'd take a look at him....Mike Williams, yeah..i thought he was going into the draft, especially a year away from playing..but ,hey...that's Detroit for ya.....Troy Williamson...they knew he had no hands going into the draft...can't blame him...Mark Clayton, I do like, and would be better and have the stats....IF they had a QB.
Malcolm Kelly is better than every WR you mentioned...and he's going to prove it opposite Lee Evans in Buffalo...count on it.

1st round WR's almost always disappoint.

Agree....Other than QB, WR might be the...
....most difficult position to grade.
I think there will be several options at the end of the second round, without much of a drop-off.
When you look at RB and CB, after the first 4-5 are gone, there is a huge talent gap. Not so much at WR.
End of the 2nd round...Caldwell could be there, it's looking like Manningham and Doucet might be there....And a guy I think would be a perfect (speed) guy to replace Terry Glenn is Donnie Avery (very underrated IMO).
You also have guys that have been moving up the boards like Eddie Royal and Dexter Jackson. Both these guys are going to be killers in the return game, as well as "slot machines". Maybe a little early to consider in the 2nd, but I wouldn't be disappointed if our scouts thought they were best of the rest because they both have special talents.
I also think that we have our BIG red zone threat in TO and to some extent Crayton. I know that TO is not getting any younger, but I would rather have a small quick guy that can help us in the return game and in the slot. For those teams looking for the big red zone WR, Hardy should go after Kelly and Sweed are off the board.
Even into the second day, there are some talented WR's like Purify from Nebraska or that Art's boy from Arkansas that provide much better value than taking Hardy in Round 1 (if you are after size).

NFL Network's Adam Schefter reports the Patriots are close to re-signing free agent Randy Moss.
Schefter says the Patriots have a "standing multi-year offer to make Moss one of the highest paid receivers in the NFL." Moss is perhaps realizing the market for him isn't as strong as believed, although we wouldn't count out another team like the Rams, Redskins, or Eagles making a last minute run at him.

Receivers
While no first round draft pick is a sure thing, that doesn't mean that the Cowboys shouldn't try to obtain T.O.'s replacement in the first round. T.O. has sent three quarterbacks to the Pro Bowl. When he left, they all went into steep decline, proving that he, not the qb, was the impact player on the offense. T.O. has been injured both years he has been here. Last season the fact that he wasn't 100% for the playoff game ended the season. See three points in the second half. If T.O. is healthy all season, an impact wide receiver opposite him will be icing on the cake. If he is injured, maybe the offense won't disappear if we get a receiver that can step in for T.O. There aren't many that can come close. Just because it's not a sure thing doesn't mean that we shouldn't try. If T.O. is injured next year, everyone on this board will wish we had.
John Jacques Taylor agrees:
http://www.dallasnews.com/sharedcont...
If Jerry will just take the best skill position players available with the 22nd and 28th picks in the first round, then he will get the young players he needs at wide receiver and running back to make sure the Cowboys have offensive firepower for years.
He does not have to reach. Nor does he have to gamble.
All he has to do is wait.
Understand, Jerry can't stand waiting. He loves the chase. He loves wheeling and dealing. He is a gambler by nature.
But now is not the time.
By all accounts, this is the best running back draft in years. Darren McFadden is clearly the best, but not by much. Rashard Mendenhall is gathering steam, and by the time April rolls around, the consensus on the best running back may have changed.
The Cowboys will also be able to find a receiver in the first round, whether it's someone like Malcolm Kelly or Limas Sweed.
You draft skill in the first round. There's enough of it to go around this year that Jerry doesn't have to be creative to find it.
by RB on Mar 3, 2008 7:01 AM CST 0 recs
what makes you think T.O.'s replacement
is in this draft? Its a really weak draft for WRs (no clear cut #1 WRs), so maybe his replacement is still playing in college, maybe he's still playing for another team or just maybe he's on our roster.
In any event, reaching for a WR just because T.O. is getting older is really foolish IMO.

I have been a huge supporter of Hardy
I think he would be a good pick up at #28. He should be a future #1 and could start at the #2 spot in 09'. He is a playmaker and is a huge target (6'7"). Don't let the 40 time fool you, at Indiana he had pretty good speed and quickness. I also like Kelly and Sweed and think they all are better than the last two years drafts' wide recievers (except maybe Calvin Johnson).

I think I made it sound like
his 40 time was unimppresive to me. But a 4.48 40 is great for a 6'6" reciever. I also think that he wouldn't have gained too much staying another year. If we were to wait on a wideout till' next year that would be okay, if we could land a more top-flight WR. Next year I would be ecstatic if we could land Jeremy Maclin from MU. Last year he set the NCAA freshman record for most all-purpose yards in a single season. Maclin was named as a Concensus First Team All-American by the Associated Press as an All-Purpose player. He finished 07' with 80 receptions and 16 touchdowns. Of course, chances are he doesn't come out next year as a Soph. and even if he does he could be too high a pick.

I think Matt Jones is a tweener
not quite a receiver and not big enough to be a tightend. He surely came on the scene in the the NFL in a flash but has really fizzled out, I tihnk I read he was in the doghouse with Jack Del Rio. Jones / Hardy
When you watch the guy on the field, there's no effort.
We all read about Jones laid back lifestyle coming out of Arkansas and his laid back approach has transferred to the field. I think Matt Jones could be an incredible talent (still), but he doesn't appear to be motivated. That is part of the reason that Del Rio is so disgusted with him. Even Mike Tice (who had a good relationship with Randy Moss) hasn't been able to motivate Jones. Maybe a 1-year deal would help?
What I like about Hardy is the 36 TD's in the last three years. What an incredible Red Zone target Hardy would be with his large frame and excellent hands. I'm probably wouldn't be an advocate of taking him at #28, but if we could trade down (pick up and extra #3) and still get Hardy in the 40 range, I would be elated.
