Cowboy hindsight: in defense of Parcells, prudent free agency and Jessica Simpson

The 2004 Draft saw us pick up Julius Jones, Jacques Reeves and Patrick Crayton. Pretty good draft right?

Clarence E. Hill doesn’t think so.

Julius Jones, Jacob Rogers, Stephen Peterman, Bruce Thornton, Sean Ryan and Jacques Reeves are no longer with the team... So that leaves Crayton, a seventh round pick from Northwest Oklahoma State who has developed into a starter opposite Terrell Owens.

Remind me again why Bill Parcells is considered such a good drafter. His history with the Cowboys suggests otherwise.

Ouch. That’s just hurtful. I wouldn’t be so harsh, man. You find three starters in any draft and I think that’s a pretty good one.

I would say Billy P is a good drafter because he drafted damn near all of our impact players – D. Ware, Marion Barber, T-Newman. Jeff Ireland certainly had a big part in that as well. He also cut Quincy Carter (awesome decision) and kept this dude named Tony Romo (even better decision), who I heard is pretty good. My point is, it was ultimately his call and time after time Parcells made the right decision. Don't see how you could deny that.

Javon Walker. DeAngelo Hall. Nnamdi Asomugha. The Raiders have several players we were salivating over. They threw money at Hall and Walker. Asomugha was never available although there was speculation he might be.

ESPN’s John Clayton speaks about the cost of acquiring and keeping these players.

Al Davis likes to talk about the Raiders' commitment to excellence. This offseason, the world is wondering if he's committed to debt.

The pending DeAngelo Hall trade, which won't be completed until Hall agrees to an Asante Samuel-like contract, is Davis' latest venture into a wild spending spree. He gave safety Gibril Wilson a six-year, $39 million contract. Defensive tackle Tommy Kelly received a seven-year, $52.5 million deal. Offensive tackle Kwame Harris moved across the bay from the 49ers for a three-year, $14 million deal. Wide receiver Javon Walker caught a six-year, $55 million pass.

This is the cost of jumping head first in free agency. Jerry Jones was wise to NOT heed my advice and blow money just for the sake of doing it. Of course we didn't have the money under the cap in the first place. But we could've panicked. I'm glad we didn't.

Nice to see Bobby Carpenter has something to fall back on. He’s featured in Karli Whetstone’s video "Hey Cowboy" and the camera follows him as he does cool manly stuff. He’s the archetype Cowboy – bailin’ hay, big Cowboy hat, stone Cowboy stare. Who knew Captain Caveman was popular with the lady folk.

I’m trying to think of something witty to say, but seriously, I’m just glad I get to see him doing something besides running down the field to cover a kickoff return.

Troy Aikman is on the ballot for the National Football Foundation and College Hall of Fame.

Cool. So cool.

He's already in the Pro Football Hall of Fame so he just decided to round out the resume.

With the upcoming draft and free agency rounding out, now is the time to talk about something of substance: Tony Romo and Jessica Simpson.

Yup. The ditzy blond and harbinger of bad luck is back. She was recently seen with Romo at a Mavs-Lakers game. The Mavs promptly loss.

I write this post not to sensationalize the relationship. That’s already happened.

I write this post because I’ve come to this conclusion: she’s not going anywhere so we better get used to her.

Apparently, regardless of what we think, Romo is pretty fond of her. He defended her after the Philly debacle, which was the first time I’ve really seen him upset at the media. He wasn’t pleased with T.O. making jokes about her and T.O. promptly apologized and then sent them on vacation. Romo hung out with her during the bye. Now he shows up at a Mavs game with her.

And you know what? I kinda like that.

It’s pretty ballsy to throw the middle finger to the media and hyper-sensitive fans. This is my girl and I don’t give a damn what you think. It’s a package deal.

And you know what? I’ll take that deal. If she’s what makes him happy, I’m all for it. She’s from Texas. She was probably a Cowboys fan before he was. And contrary to some of the more sleazy things said about her, I think she’s attractive, she isn’t crazy (read: Amy Winehouse) and there’s no pictures of her doing crazy things on the internet (read: Britney Spears).

So now she’s part of the family. Well, lemme backtrack. She’s not part of the family but she’s like the live-in girlfriend of your favorite uncle. So I’ve gotta defend her. Just like I defend Wade Phillips, Jerry Jones, Patrick Crayton and T.O. I’m not going overboard. I’m not buying her albums. But if she wants to come to a game, I’m all for it. We can’t be scared of this so-called "curse of Jessica." Might as well break the curse ASAP. Have her front and center for the opening day game. And then when the ‘Boys win in a rout, maybe the curse will reverse itself. Then next thing you know she’ll be like a good luck charm. Like a big blond rabbit’s foot with Botox. I can see it now. Donovan McNabb drops back at Linc Field and looks up and sees Jessica’s mug on the Jumbotron. Blinded by the pink jersey, he fumbles the ball away right into the hands of D. Ware, who prances into the endzone for six.

So let it be known: TH has got your back Jessica (until my quarterback dumps you, then I’m dropping you like a hot potato). I don’t think you look slutty at all. I would say dignified. Regal even. And your movies aren’t that bad. "Employee of the Month" was funny. You were good in "Dukes of Hazzard." Well, it was good looking at you. But it takes a real actress to pull off the daisy dukes look.

Welcome to the family.

BP

isn't exactly a "stud" at drafting, but I trust the guy. I think Hill went a little too far on the bashing.

On the Jessica thing, TH you got a point my brotha. I've already started defending her and her apparent curse to non-Cowboy fans, partially because I was at that Philly game. =[

Everyone has to admit that Simpson

is extremely hot, I seriously doubt thay any of you guys would ever kick her out your bed.

TH is right, might as well get used to her at the games, doesn't look like Tony is kicking her to the curb anytime soon. Although I'm still holding out hope he does right before camp.

In Romo we Trust

Well

If he actually is human (I suspect he is)having her by his side this long will make it easier to play the game without having those nervous "gotta impress the new hot lady" bad games.

I know many of you think that's crazy talk and if you asked him he'd say the same and likely deny it too, but I've always found myself more nervous and performing poorly when I had a new GF watching me do things I normally would be very good at. If she was just there that's one thing, but having her all over the jumbo is a totally different thing. I guess my point is, he's not a god, just another man who's better at football than you and I, and believe it or not he has nerves too.

Oh and

Without BP we would not be where we are today, no ifs ands or buts about it.

by sublimezg on Mar 20, 2008 4:09 PM CDT up reply actions

I don't buy that theory

Romo plays ball in front of thousands of fans in person and millions more on TV. Like he's really going to get nervous because of one ditsy bimbo who probably has no clue as to what is going on during the game.

I just don't want to have to see her during cutaways after everything the guy does bad, or good.

I could care less if she's there, just keep her in a lux suite and don't show her. Put her in the undisclosed location.

yea

the big difference is that he doesn't know 99.9999999% of the people watching him, let alone trying to get into their pants. I can't even believe how high a pedestal people put pro athletes on, as if they really are different from you and I. Sorry to pull back the curtain on your hero's dude but they are human too (shocker!!).

by sublimezg on Mar 20, 2008 4:34 PM CDT up reply actions

LMAO

What does putting Romo on a pedestal (and I do) have to do with anything? If he gets rattled, thinking about what Jessica Simpson thinks about his play, then there is a much deeper problem.

Sure he's human (no shocker to me), but he'd better be enough of a professional not to let his personal life interfere with his game, bud!

Tom

You seem nice enough and I want to make t clear I'm not trying to argue but as soon as FOX decides to put Miss Simpson on the Jumbo every 5 minutes, his personal life instantly interferes with his professional life. I don't know if people are blind or are just hoping the players they put so much stock in are like, what... Superhuman? It's endlessly amazing to me.

Hell some people can't even piss when a stranger is watching them and I'm pretty sure we're all experts at pissing by now, right?   Never mind, I think I've wasted my time again :)

by sublimezg on Mar 20, 2008 7:55 PM CDT up reply actions

You honestly think that he played bad because

Jessica was in the house?

You are implying that he either 1)cares more about trying to impress his girlfriend than doing his job, or 2)he has a weak psyche

My opinion has nothing to do with placing Romo on a pedestal, and everything to do with the fact that he's a professional football player and not distracted by who might be watching him. Also I stand by my earlier statement that she probably had no clue what was going on in the game anyway. LOL

it certainly didn't help

I wonder if you had a new GF come to your place of work and started making those stupid faces all over a jumbo monitor with all your bosses and peers eyes focused squarely on you if you'd just go about normal business. My guess is your jobs slightly less stressful too.

So yea, I honestly believe it. I guess I just see things more clearly than some. Or maybe I'm just honest with myself.

I'm not sure

I do kind of believe that it might have had some effect on Romo, but may also be a total psychological trick brought on by Fox.  I know they showed her a lot on TV in the Philly game, whereas they hadn't for the Jest/Packers games that she attended.  So maybe it's a "Tony's struggling, they keep showing her, it must be her fault" phenomenon where in reality nothing was different (from Romo's perspective) from previous games.

For those lucky enough to attend the games, did they show her a lot on the jumbotron in the stadium?  If they did, I could see how that might affect Tony a little.  But even then it's a stretch.

It's also worth pointing out that Romo didn't seem to have big problems when courting his other ladies, or at least the evidence is inconclusive.  It's probably nothing.

Bottom line is that the longer they're together, the less it should affect him, so here's hoping they get hitched at this point.

Wait, why am I talking like this?

TH, I know you didn't say

what I thought you said. You aren't going to buy her "albums"?

What about her 8-tracks?

"On my signal...unleash Hell." Demarcus Maximus Decimus Ware

by APerfectStar on Mar 20, 2008 4:21 PM CDT reply actions

That's right!

Albums don't mean "records" (or at least, not anymore...maybe the terms were truly interchangeable once).  It's a type of release, like a novel vs. a short story.  Besides, if you don't call them albums, what would you call them these days?  CDs are almost down to the level of cassettes 10 years ago at this point.  MP3s?  Even that's kind of inaccurate as there are many different electronic formats.

It's all muddled up now.  People use the term EP for non-vinyl, even digital releases now, even though that's really more record terminology (nobody would dare call something an LP anymore).  I love arguing about this silly stuff.

Oh, and, I'll just go on record that I'm not going to buy her albums either, but I totally agree with TH on this one.  Nice post Tuna, it's all true.

For the record

Blonde Ambition was lousy. Just sayin.

Anyways, I've said all along that she shouldn't have ever become an issue at all. I personally don't find her attractive, but she's Romo's girlfriend, not mine. If people don't like that he dates her and brings her to games and what not, then they just don't like it.

There are two Adrian Petersons, but there is only one Marion Barber.

Re: Tuna Drafts

The guy got horse blinders focused on a player or two and wouldn't hear reason. This can be a bonus or a detriment; it led to trading up for Canty and taking  a host of other studs in the late rounds (very few teams did as well as we have in the 4th-7th round under his tenure). It also led to Marcus Spears and Bobby Carpenter instead of Luis Castillo and Antonio Cromartie.

Good Point

I was screaming for Castillo and Cromartie. Oh Well, I guess thats why im not in the personnell department.

in 06, wasnt Cromartie picked right after Carpenter and Marcus McNeil and Devin Hester a few picks after Fasano.

Parcells

Parcells made some good personnel moves, but the 2004 and 2006 draft were complete and total failures. Out of 16 picks, 3 are still with us (Crayton, Fasano, McQuistan). Only one (Crayton) has been a true starter and that was only due to injury.

If Mike Shannahan didnt press the panic button, we would have had Maurice Clarett instead of Marion Barber.

And what about free agent pick ups like Marcellus Wiley, and Marco Rivera.

Parcells helped, but lets not act like he completely set this thing up.
