Ocho Cinco
I was just watching The Best Damn Sports Show Period and Chad was a guest. They asked him a bunch of questions and among them were if he could co-exist with T.O. if he was traded to Dallas. His response was, "Oh, definitely. If I end up in Dallas I would just look at which finger I would put [my ring] on. It's gonna work. It's gonna work, TJ and Chad Johnson is no different from 81 and 85."
I know there's pretty much no possibility of this happening, but just hearing Chad talk about it gave me chills.

Jerry can't make it happen because
he has to work within the confines of a salary cap and you can't pay 2 WRs 8-10 mil a year, not economically feasible.
If there were no cap, however, there is no question in my mind Jerry would acquire another stud WR, no doubt about that.

Agree 100%
Can't afford Ocho Cinco and TO and Witten and Crayton, way too much $ tied up in the receivers. Plus they are expecting Stanback to step up. Also Terry Glenn has a chance to contribute if he recovers.

That list right there
is why I dont think we will draft a receiver in the first round. I think the team views a healthy Stanback as a 1st or 2nd round WR. Just think back to last preseason when Stanback caught that TD on the post route. That was one of the better catches by a Cowboys receiver all year. I think he is going to be the breakout star next year as long as he is 100% healthy.

Please Goodell!!!!!
You were smart to shorten the time between picks in the draft, now can you move this event up two or three weeks to around the early to middle of April, this on going silliness is getting out of hand....
Cincy isn't going to trade Johnson, no matter how much whining he does, it would cost them 8 million against their cap, and Dallas doesn't have any cap space as it is to take him on, so its not going to happen, just like the Moss signing or the Hall trade or any other high priced whining baby that wants out of their current situation.
Thee only possible trade that may happen for Dallas, and thats a small chance is Roy Williams in Detroit and that would only happen during the draft in the first round, I know Detroit is saying that they have no intentions in trading Williams, but if he wants out of Detroit, he's going about it the right way, keeping quiet and waiting to see what happens, If Williams conveyed to Detroit that he wants out and is leaving after this upcoming season through free agency, then its a good chance Detroit will trade him during the draft for picks. I think there's a good chance he'll be traded, the Lions have a pretty deep receiving core, and if they could get a first and third from some team for and established receiver in Williams in this deep draft, I think they'll jump at it.
I said it in December, Dallas wasn't going to sign any high priced free agents, a low to mid level player if one came available, Thomas was one, probably one more coming along the way, they were going to concentrate on their own restricted and free agents they want to keep, Ratliff, Romo, Crayton, Adams, franchised Hamlin, tendered Canty and Barber. So actually Jerry was very smart and NOT getting into bidding wars with some of these players demands. Its rediculous money some of these guys are getting. I believe Berrian was a target but after what he got, it was a very smart move by Jerry not to go after him, its time to get ready for the draft and disregard any and all of these rediculous media hyping of players coming to Dallas via trades during the silly season before the draft.
Please, can the draft get here already.....

I don't think we're getting Williams either
because like Ocho, he will also demand 8-10 mil per year and somebody in FA next season will give it to him, just like the Raiders gave Walker that huge contract.
In todays NFL market, teams simply cannot afford 2 stud receivers, unless they happen to draft one who turns out really good. Hopefully that will us with Stanback.

I wouldn't count out Philly
making a run at Williams, I think Philly who is looking for a lead receiver, calling Detroit when they're on the clock during the draft to see if they could pry Williams away from Detroit for the 19th pick and a fourth round kicker..

My favorite quote...
...from his interview:
"If I end up in Dallas, I would just look at which finger I'm gonna put it on," Johnson declared. "That's it. Ain't no ifs, ands or buts about it."
How right he is.

If we get Williams or Johnson...
TO is gone after this year. You guys are right that we can't afford both, and we wouldn't need to. TO is getting older, and needs to take a pay cut if he wants to stay with this team in 2009.

I disagree, a 35 yr old T.O. is still better
than Johnson or Williams. He has at least 3 more really good years left in him playing at a high level.

After watching him on Total Access
I can't say I like his attitude much. I mean, I know he's always been this way, and I'll always have a certain level of respect for his play-making abilities. However, he was a complete jerk during his segments on NFLTA. He kept interrupting and shrugging off Rich.
Also, he said that he would beat Rod Woodson and Prime easily.
Can't say I really want that kind of attitude.

I would love this...
I think that adding Roy Williams or Ocho Cinco would make this offense the Colts of the past 5 years. BTW, the Colts are proof you can have to great, expensive receivers on the same team.
The truth is, Dallas could absolutely afford to have Ocho Cinco/Roy Williams and TO (assuming TO's contract stays similar over the next few years). The salary cap will probably go up some more, and we'll have more players coming off the books. Also, a lot of our own guys end up signing at fair market value instead of getting overpaid.
The problem is that we sign/re-sign people like Crayton or Kosier instead of developing our own. If there's anything the Pats/Colts/Chargers model has taught us, it's that you don't pay free agency prices for mediocre players unless you absolutely have to. Pay the big bucks to star players. I understand hanging on to your LT or C, but we need to get to a point where we are cycling guys through who aren't stars. That's how you build a dynasty in the new NFL.

i agree ghetto.....out with the old and mediocre.
Over the next 12 months, I'd do everything possible to trade or release Roy Williams, Marcus Spears, Bobby Carpenter, Akin Ayodele, Anthony Henry, Terry Glenn, Miles Austin, Anthony Fasano, Mark Columbo, Kyle Kosier, and Brad Johnson...
You'd free up so much money , you'd be able to sign both Chad Johnson AND Roy Williams....LOL...at least ONE of them....
THEN resign TO & Canty, and if we can work out a reasonable contract, Hamlin, Newman, and Barber as well.

In with??
I agree that some of these guys cost more than they're worth, but you're talking about gutting our roster of both depth and starters. Williams and Henry, like it or not, are half of our defensive backfield, Spears is a (bad) starting DE, Carpenter and Ayodele are our ILB depth (though Ayodele will go for sure), Columbo and Kosier are starters, etc.
I realize these guys are probably just examples and we could cut a good half of them and survive, but we gotta replace these guys somehow, and it's really obvious that FA is no longer a viable option for that.
I wish we had a running chart of the cap penalties and such these guys would trigger if they were traded/released so we could really get some crazy scenarios going.
by grapejoos on Mar 20, 2008 8:12 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
Well...it's quite simple actually...
Spears can be replaced by Ratliff, Hatcher, Bowen, and rookie depth......
Ayodele is being replaced by Zack Thomas.....
Carpenter should be replaced with a mid rounder, Beau Bell?, Ben Moffet?...
Roy Williams will be replaced by Hamlin or draft pick, Josh Barrett?, Jamar Adams?....
Henry will be replaced with our first day pick and/or obtaining Adam Jones....
Terry Glenn will be replaced by a rookie or signed free agent, or traded vet...in doing so, Miles Austin will not make the roster.
Kosier and Columbo will be replaced by MaQuistan and Free, that is why we drafted them, right ?...
I really don't see the confusion here, this can easily be done, and I see it being done...
Net savings.....over 20 million dollars in cap space.

I watched the link
Chad and the guys didn't say a thing about T.O. or the Dallas Cowboys.
Maybe they cut the video short online???
