Felix Jones visiting the Dallas Cowboys

The DMN blog says Felix Jones plus a couple of Indiana guys will be visiting the Cowboys.

Arkansas RB Felix Jones, and Indiana WR James Hardy and CB Tracy Porter have been penciled in to visit Valley Ranch, three more of the 30 in-house visits the Cowboys are able to host with draft prospects.

All three are tentatively slated to come in on or around April 16, according to the office of agent Eugene Parker.

I’m a fan of Felix Jones and wouldn’t mind seeing the Cowboys draft him. Although I do admit that if Jonathan Stewart dropped down to us, I’d probably be more interested in drafting him. Anyway, good to see Cowboys inviting Jones in for a visit along with the other two guys.

No sooner had Pacman Jones told us he was changing and would be a different guy, then this pops up at Deadspin. Yup, it’s a flyer for a party here in Atlanta this weekend that promises to make it rain and includes an appearance by the girls of Club Blaze and by the Pacman. Club Blaze is a strip club here in Atlanta. Yours truly was thinking about attending the party and giving you guys the lowdown on the scene. Alas, Pro Football Talk called the number on the flyer and was told the party is canceled. Seriously though, I don’t know what Pacman’s intentions were in regards to this party but this is exactly the kind of thing he needs to avoid to have any chance at a career again. Far be it from me to say that NFL players have to be monks, but guys who have been in trouble like Pacman should really avoid these types of situations. I’m telling you Pacman, Madden and game film, at home, every night, is the ticket.

Update [2008-3-26 11:45:34 by Dave Halprin (Grizz)]: In the comments, Mirky Waters provides us with this update, given by Deadspin.

(UPDATE: Apparently, Pac Man was played here. From an email to Pro Football Talk:

"This is KAY-P contacting you on behalf of Club Nite concerning an event that was suppose to feat. Pacman Jones. We are apologizing to him and his family for the misunderstanding. We were informed by a false represenatives who lied to us saying that they could book Pacman Jones. After getting in contact with the real represenatives we discovered that Pacman Jones was not aware his name was advertised for an event and we also found out that he was not even accepting offers to host events. Again we would like to apologize to Pacman Jones, his fan and family."

Good job Team Pac, you guys were clean on this one. Whew, I was worried for a moment there. END UPDATE

Here’s a general recap of Pacman’s appearance today. Nick Eatman weighs in here.
Matt Mosley covers it here. JJT isn’t convinced in a short article here.

Darren McFadden had his Pro Day today. Of course, a possible Cowboys trade for McFadden made the article.

[Chris] Mortensen also said Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones has discussed the possibility of trading up to draft McFadden, no matter what the Arkansas alum might say publicly.

I think this quote by JJT sums up

the PacMan issue the best.

He's a phenomenal talent, but I personally don't like players you can't trust. It doesn't matter if you can fine him or cut him if he screws up. What matters is the Cowboys will rely on his talent, and sooner or later, history says he will do something stupid that will have a lasting negative effect on the team. He screwed up in college and in the NFL. There's no reason, thus far, to believe he won't screw up again and leave his teammates out to dry.

Seriously

PacMan needs to divorce himself completely from the 'Make it Rain' phrase. It's astounding that, in light of everything that happened the last time he 'Made it Rain' that his name and face would be prominently featured on a flyer that promised the same for a party.

There are two Adrian Petersons, but there is only one Marion Barber.

In light of the latest revelation

I will assume that PacMan already has divorced himself from 'Make it Rain'.

Re: Felix

I love him as the complementary back. He's tailor made for this team in a role as complement to MB3.
My question, however, is this. Do you really want to spend a first round pick on a player you fully intend to be splitting carries? Because if we're looking for a full time player, nearly every pundit will swear by Jon Stewart.

I have no clue what you guys think ??????????????

Why is everyone assuming that MBIII is not going to be here after this season ???????????????? And even if he's not coming back.....What in the work makes you think Felix Jones isn't going to be a starter in the NFL ?

You would rather draft a guy that you haven't seen work out, have no idea what his status will be, is in a cast, and has pins in his feet right now ??????????????????????????

Might as well use our #28 pick on Dennis Dixon.....for pete's sake....You do not select a player that isn't even available to work out for you, with your number one pick....period...turf toe is no joke......at 235lbs.....turf toe is killer...

For the past 3 months everyone's been clamoring about getting the right complementary back to go with MBIII to form the best, most potent duo in the league......now all seem to be wavering on thatr idea...and are thinking our #1 need is to draft a so called "full time" running back, even though we don't use a single back offense......

I got news for you people...Felix Jones is as much an "every play, every day, every down, featured RB in the NFL"  as any other RB available in this draft....Just because he shared the load at Arkansas doesn't mean he couldn't have handled a bigger role.... In fact, I bet if he stayed in school.....he'd be the front runner for next years Heisman Trophy...and if he played for Oregon or Illinois....he would have been even more effective, and probably been the starter the past few seasons.

DMac is 4 lbs heavier, yet everyone's concensus #1 RB ....

wake up.....he the same size as Brian Westbrook...

Re: Jones

Firstly, I agree with you on the Barber-Jones duo. It would be formidable. However, as much as I love Barber (and it borders on obsession) one must look at the situation realistically. If Barber wants a Michael-Turner type contract... we can't offer him that . Elite teams can't afford to pay a PART-TIME RB 7 mil a year.
Which is why I think drafting Jones on the basis of having a tremendous complement to MB3 is short-sighted. Jones is doubtful to be as good an NFL RB as Stewart. That's the simple fact. He's a speed back who's really not all that fast, has never handled the load, has some fumbling issues, and can't run well between the tackles.

http://heartbreakplex.blogspot.com/

by BudLight on Mar 26, 2008 7:31 AM CDT to parent up   0 recs

your off base bud......

let's keep to the facts....Stewart also had fumbling issues...He is not as fast as Jones, and also shared quite a bit of his carries up until this past season, AND is in a cast right now, following extensive foot surgery...the bread and butter for a RB......with no possible way of knowing if this will continue to be a problem, alas Neon Sanders.......

and if your going to base Jones' 40 time at the combine as your measuring stick, wait til pro day maybe ??...I'm thinking you have barely ever seen him play, as he goes between the tackles quite often on a Arkansas team that sucked, and had no passing game...It's alot easier to run when you have a Dennis Dixon to worry about.......Stewart is strickly straight line speed...as for Jones is by far more elusive, shiftier, and overall much better football speed....I'm not saying Stewart sucks....

I realize you are just using your OWN personal opinion of each player....by touting your choice by degrading the second...

Jones is doubtful to be as good an NFL RB as Stewart. That's the simple fact.
Fact is it's your bias opinion.....there is no possible way for you to back that fact....

He's a speed back who's really not all that fast, He has run sub 4.4 40's on several occasions...40 times don't mean jack....I've seen the guy run....his 10 yard slit time was second at the combine...the true measuring stick.

has never handled the load,

That's funny....i thought we had a two back system ???

has some fumbling issues,Has less career fumbles than Jonathan Stewart.

and can't run well between the tackles
Show me some game tape on that.....cuz it's obvious your bias again if you don't think he can run behind Goroude and Big Davis....give him an inch of daylight and he's gone...

Go tell these guys they're no good, and can't handle the starting duties too.....cuz Jones is bigger or as big as everyone of these backs....

willie parker- among league leaders..
brian westbrook- among best in league
julius jones- ehhh....nowhere near Felix Jones
warrick dunn- one of best of all time..
reggie bush- gifted athlete, still much upside.
etc.
etc

I hope and pray some team takes Stewart before he gets to 22...We've reached our quota of injured players to be drafted so they can sit out their rookie year licking wounds...If the guy was completely healthy, and had no known turf toe problems...I'd be all for him...but i've had turf toe..surgery and all....and i'm still feeling it 20 years later...no thank you...i don't risk number one picks on anyone with surgery to their feet...

One step further

BRB, I'll go one step further....I'm not convinced that MBIII will be here THIS season. As I've laid out in previous posts, this is a no win situation.  Dallas doesn't want to sign him to a long-term deal at Michael Turner prices and MBIII will not want to play for the absurdly low $2.5M tender.  If I was MBIII, there would be no way in hell I would play more than the 8 games required to accrue another year and thus be eligbile for free agency after the 2008 season.

I still think there is a 50/50 chance he is moved before draft day for a 2nd round pick.

by Cowboy Louie on Mar 26, 2008 8:24 AM CDT to parent up   0 recs

He'll play for the tender

While I'm sure that MB3 would like to get a new deal now, I don't see him trying to sit out half the season.  $2.5 million is a very significant pay raise for him.  He can "feed his family" with that.  Rosenhaus or not, I think he'll play this year for us, but I am quite uncertain beyond that.  A lot depends on how much we take on in salary obligations between now and the start of the season.

haha,,,,,count on this....a lil "wake up" 101

For all you doubters of Felix Jones and his abilities..And your sceptical beliefs that he couldn't handle a role of featured back if called apon:

Felix Jones          5'-10" 210lbs. as of 3/24/08

I see him packing on at least 5-10 pounds of mustle once he matures and gets into NFL weight program....all while getting faster, stronger, bigger.

7.78 ypc- 2nd all time yards per carry leader in the history of NCAA football, which dates back over 100 years.

2007 NFL Rushing Yard Leaders (top 40)
-----------------------------

  1.  Brian Westbrook    5'-10" 203lbs.
  1.  Willie Parker      5'-10" 210lbs.
  1. Thomas Jones       5'-10" 215lbs.
  1. M. Lynch           5'-11" 215lbs.
  1. Addai              5'-11" 214lbs.
  1. C. Taylor          5'-11" 213lbs.
  1. S. Young           5'-11" 207lbs.
  1. W. Dunn            5'-09" 187lbs.
  1. M Morris           5'-11" 215lbs.
  1. J. Norwood         5'-11" 202lbs.
  1. J. Jones           5'-10" 207lbs.
  1. R. Bush            6'-00" 203lbs.
  1. R. Johnson         5'-10" 214lbs.

oh...btw...all these backs are starters and part of a commitee backfield. Hence..like a true storm, the lightening before the thunder...!!!!!!!!!!

Of the 13 RB's listed in the top 40 , 12 were also listed among the top 30 rushing attempts. I only chose the backs that are comparable in weight...most of the remaining RB's among the top 40 are the same 5'10", yet weigh 5-10 more than Jones...who will certainly fill out to about 215- 220lbs.....ummmm...The same size as LT...

I can go on and on about the nonsense that you don't need to weigh 235lbs to be considered a featured back in this league, in fact if you can name more than 3 RB's in the history of the league that carried that size and bulk and are in the Hall of Fame, I'll give you a lolipop....but I think this notion that Felix Jones won't be an every down featured RB is complete Bull Sh*t, and those who don't feel he can carry that role are totally uninformed with reality, and have no clue what their talking about. You can go back 40 years, and I bet the overall average of an NFL RB is exactly 5'10" 210 lbs. So stop passing off FUD, and claim your statements as your own opinions, rather that stipulate there is facts behind your comments.

There are maybe 2-3 RB's tops in the entire league that are considered featured backs, as every single team utilizes a commitee system....Look at all the clowns that had rushed 300-400 carries a year....they are either gone or on their way out, or won't be around long, Larry Johnson tearing it up ? Shaun Alexander ?...I don't care if MBIII doesn't sign a contract or not...He'll be over paid no matter what he does....We can easily pick up a thunder(Beany Wells) to go with our lightening(Jones) in next year draft or go free agency......This is all i'm going to say on this subject...If we aquire Felix Jones this draft.....I assure you, you'll all be grabbing his jersey at a store near you when he wins rookie of the year.... he'll be here for the next 6+ years racking up 40 yard runs, catching screens for 40 yards, and leading the league in kick returns....you wait and see....cuz obviously i'm one up on this knowledge.

And this statement wins a blue star:

Too many on this board are eager to write-off F. Jones before he's even played a down in the NFL -- probably based on other bloggers' opinions.  The guy is waiting to break out and definitely could contend for the Heisman next year. Timmy

I'm with Boyz here

Too many on this board are eager to write-off F. Jones before he's even played a down in the NFL -- probably based on other bloggers' opinions.  The guy is waiting to break out and definitely could contend for the Heisman next year.

He's either stupid for passing up a bucketload of cash in next year's draft, or he's smart and willing to take less now and play for a contender.

Either way, he and Barber would make a tremendous tandem.  And if Barber becomes trade bait this year, or leaves in FA next year, I would not be surprised to see Jones become the lead back he should've been in Arkansas.

CHOMP! CHOMP!! Catch some Pacman fever...at a club near you.

I'm not writing off F. Jones

I'd be a happy camper if we drafted him. I've said all along that my expectation was that he was the guy we'd take with one of our picks and that would be good with me. The only reason I'm talking about Stewart now is not because I've been influenced by other bloggers, but because he may actually be available now. I had him gone in the mid-teens ever since he ran so well at the combine. The guys is 235 and runs a sub-4.5 40. That's a serious athlete. Plus, he was very productive in college. Yeah, I'm worried about the injury, so that has me still debating it, but if he's available at #22 or especially #28, then he would almost definitely be the best value player still on the board in my evaluations. The kid's a top-talent and at running back, I'm going to take the best back I can find, even if he doesn't necessarily fit the "speed" back we are looking for.

Arkansas Pro Day results:

Although Jones didn't run the 40, I'm glad because I know he would have improved on his stellar 4.44 40 combine time, and would be picked up before 22...

report from http://www.draftdaddy.com ,

Gil Brandt's pro day report:

Arkansas (March 25)
With very windy conditions outside, workouts were forced indoors on field turf. Twenty-six teams were on hand, including Bears head coach Lovie Smith and coaches from the Packers, Panthers, Rams and Jets.

» RB Darren McFadden (6-1¼, 215): Had a 35½-inch vertical jump, 4.10 short shuttle, 6.86 cone drills, 13 reps in the bench press and kept his numbers from the combine for everything else. He had a good workout and did a good job of answering questions for the teams in attendance.

RB Felix Jones (5-10 1/8, 210): Had a 34½-inch vertical jump, 13 reps in the bench press, ran position drills and kept his numbers from the combine for everything else. He caught the ball well. improved 225lbs lift from 8 reps at combine to 13, caught the ball well...that's what i'm talking about, get this guy out in space on a LB...looooook out !!

» DB Matterral Richardson (5-11, 195): Ran the 40 in 4.52 and 4.49 and did position drills. He was late for the start of the event and kept his numbers from the combine for everything else.

» DL Marcus Harrison (6-2¾, 312): Had a 29-inch vertical jump, 9-foot long jump, 4.54 short shuttle, 7.55 cone drills, ran position drills and kept his numbers from the combine for everything else.

» RB Peyton Hillis (6-1, 237): Ran the 40 in 4.57 and 4.58, had a 35-inch vertical jump, 4.24 short shuttle, ran position drills and kept his numbers from the combine for everything else. He looked good but dropped several passes.
» DB Michael Grant (6-1¼, 193): Had a 36-inch vertical jump, 9-foot 10-inch long jump, ran position drills and kept his numbers from the combine for everything else.

» OL Robert Felton (6-3 5/8;, 322): Ran the 40 in 5.28 and 5.29, had a 4.88 short shuttle, 7.91 cone drills, and ran position drills. He was late for the start of the event and kept his numbers from the combine for everything else.

WR Marcus Monk (6-4¼, 215): Ran the 40 in 4.43 and 4.41, had a 36-inch vertical jump, 10-foot 2-inch long jump, ran position drills and kept his numbers from the combine for everything else.

Monk did himself very good today, Cowboys maybe should consider in round 4 if they want a big target, and if he's available. ran a 4.56 40 at combine...shows you what good those numbers mean. I think Felix Jones was foolish for not running the 40...I know he is good for 4.35 range...he's done it several times. Trust me, Monk is not faster than Jones.

Not sure about TO

But people pretending to represent stars is nothing new. A couple years ago a company I worked for paid a deposit to a guy who claimed to represent Nas, only to find out it was a scam after tickets were already sold and the venue was booked. I don't know if that's the case here, I am really hesitant to give Jones the benefit of the doubt, but it is possible.

Actually sued the club that misrepresented him. I'm not sure what the outcome of that scenario was, though.
