Pacman deal done?

I just saw on Rototimes.com that Pacman to Dallas is a done deal, and it took a 5th round pick to do it. If anyone has any insight to this please comment. Any news on any front would be a welcome gift as I sadly sit here waiting for the NFL draft. I enjoy this sight and usually find myself here first for any news and great comments on the many topics which concern our GREAT team. I'd love to participate more in the banter and would love to post diaries updating the HATED iggles. Things like what they are doing and what their ignorant fans are saying...since I am behind enemy lines. If there is any interest in that let me know and I'll do my  best to post at least once a week. Guys keep up the good work and remember...All others hate because they wish to be what we are!

Actual comment on Rototimes.com

this is what's written....although not a clear cut locked in deal, as we must rely on that proverbial "source"...... guess we won't know til tomorrow morning......it sure looks to me:...

Pacman Jones (CB)
3/30: As expected, Pacman Jones has been traded to Cowboys for a reported 5th round pick, this according to RotoTimes sources. The report noted that a news conference is scheduled for early Monday morning.

Find me a better CB trio than Jones, Newman, and Henry....

The Dallas Cowboys Defense will lead or be in top 5 in the league in sacks, probably interceptions,...heck.....total points, and yardage as well.....To go with that offense...the draft is merely gravy now, Only looking to fill in some holes in depth, always a good feeling.

You know your a good franchise when more than likely your top 3 first day picks won't even crack the starting line up.

WOOOOO... HOOOOOOO....

hasnt it been that way for some time now neways? ..i love it

WHO IS NATE JONES?

by eMBe3 on Mar 30, 2008 6:39 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

When I say depth...I'm talking eventual starters.

not career backups....If we draft ...ummm...say RB- Felix Jones at #22 , CB- Antoine Cason at #28, and and WR Andre Caldwell at #61.....means those are great picks that will be afforded time, and seasoning before they must step in and contribute as starters......None would start day 1.

In My Opinion.....there are only a few players in this entire draft that we can select, and he takes over a starting position,

unless we draft OT Jake Long, and cut Columbo,(doubtful)

or draft OG-Brandon Albert and demote or cut Kosier,(possible but still doubtful)

draft SS-Kenny Phillips and cut Roy Williams,(wishful thinking, also doubtful)

draft a WR Kelly, Sweed, Thomas, or Jackson, and cut Terry Glenn and Miles Austin,(possible, but also doubtful) and hope that Crayton stays on board with being overlooked at #2 WR, and the fact that Stanback, "athletically" is just as good as all top WR available.(It takes more than training camp to get these boys to starting status)

draft a FB- Shmitt,Hester, with offensive abilities to start over Anderson,(this is the only position I feel is up for grabs in training camp) ......so.....there you have it...

When I say "depth"...I'm talking about eventual replacements...not backups....We'll be lucky if 5 of our 8 picks even make the squad.

Drafting for depth

To go with that offense...the draft is merely gravy now, Only looking to fill in some holes in depth, always a good feeling.

Drafting for depth is not a good strategy.  Ask Switzer about the draft that brought him depth like Bjornson. . .setting the team up puts us in a position to draft the best available. . .although, CB, RB and WR are still needs.

Trade up a few spots to get ahead of Houston and draft Jonathan Stewart, thee best all around Back in the draft.

If so

This is great news. I still draft a Jenkins or Talib if available at 22 and Cason or Smith at 28, but CB is far less of a priority now. There's nothing standing in the way of this defense being elite.

not true Bud

CB remains a very high priorty since Pacman remains suspended. Cowboys have to go into the draft as if this trade never happened because we don't know if or when his reinstatement will occur.

You make a good point

But I'm working based on the assumption that Jerry has all his bases covered. I'd like to think that he wouldn't make this trade unless he was absolutely certain that Adam would be reinstated and ready to play.

by BudLight on Mar 30, 2008 9:18 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

unless Jerry has personally spoken with Goodell

I don't think he could be absolutely certain of that happening. Thats why the draft pick should be conditional on reinstatement and a 2009 pick instead of this year.

I wouldn't rule out

That Jerry has spoken to the commisioner. In fact, It's likely.

I think it's BOTH

Jerry will hedge his bets on CB and drft heavily there,

but maybe not in the first round now...

Even if we sign Pacman and he plays well

We should STILL draft a CB high.  We lost Reeves and Jones, Henry is old, and Newman's contract is up after this season.  CBs are so expensive that signing a starting-caliber one in FA is not an option; we have to solidify the position through the draft.

by grapejoos on Mar 31, 2008 9:23 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

don't be so sure....FA '09 Asomugha
I'd surely pay Asomugha 10 mil/per than Newman 9 mil/per.......5 years younger, and better.

by JerrodWheeler on Mar 31, 2008 4:02 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Are you serious ???...ok.I'll explain it to you..

OK.....Yes....Being 3 years younger than Newman means a world of difference...but...It doesn't stop there my friend...He's also 3 inches taller.....He's also 29lbs. heavier...Meaning he is also much bigger, stronger, and more physical than Newman....Shall I go on ?...ok.....He plays straight up man defense, against top WR's, all the time...so ? ...you say....well here is a little note for you to ponder.....
http://www.wikepedia.com/Nnamdi Asomugha

Asomugha was selected as the Oakland Raiders Team Captain for the 2007 season. The 2007 season was a lonely existence for Asomugha, who paid for his eight-interception breakout season of 2006. Even established star quarterbacks such as Brett Favre and Peyton Manning, neither short on confidence or receivers, would not challenge him.

Opposing quarterbacks tested him only 31 times with a mere 10 completions the entire season. One NFL scout told Pro Football Weekly that Asomugha was thrown at "less than any defender in the last 10 years" in 2007

The day Terrence Newman gets that type of respect, Is the day you can even begin to compare who's the better cornerback....Hands down my friend....And I'm a huge Newman fan....

that's all subjective. . .
number of throws in his direction has to do with who is on the other side as well as the types of defenses that they were running. . .you're presenting him as if he's the next Prime Time.  As for height and weight, those are only effective if he doesn't mind defending the run when needed.  I'm not buying it Boyz. . .largely because I haven't seen much of Asomugha play, but if he's all that - where are the post season honors?  Another subjective honor to review, but he wasn't named All-Pro by the players, coaches and media. . .

A stretch argument at best - or I'm a homer!

by JerrodWheeler on Mar 31, 2008 9:05 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

OK

I've defended Newman to no end, and I still think he's a top 5 CB. But as far as the listing of top cornerback in the NFl last year... it was either Asomugha for simply shutting people down or Cromartie for unbelievable game-breaking skills.
Asomugha is better than newman. Marginally better, but that's quite a difference-because you can't GET much better than T-New. The Raiders' defense is not completely terrible, Asomugha wasn't having his other corners picked on any more than opposing QBs were targeting Jacques Reeves.

thanks for steppin' in Bud,couldn't say it better

A stretch argument at best - or I'm a homer!

That sez it all......Fact is...you have no argument at all that would determine Newman is better....

And, btw...It's not me saying he's the next prime time...It was a NFL scout who was quoted as saying nobody has been thrown at less than him in ten years guy......I just report facts...you base your whole argument on being a self proclaimed homer who has never even seen Asomugha play.

What part of giving up 10 passes ALL YEAR doesn't translate into being one of the best /if not thee best shut down corner in the league ????

I like Newman as much as anyone....but if you can give me a bigger, stronger, younger, and more feared CB at about the same price...I'd be all over him.....With all these damn Raider signings...I can't even imagine they can afford to pay him the 10 million he deserves, and will get in the open market.

Play on the field trumps size and weight

This was said about Asomugha compared to Newman

OK.....Yes....Being 3 years younger than Newman means a world of difference...but...It doesn't stop there my friend...He's also 3 inches taller.....He's also 29lbs. heavier...Meaning he is also much bigger, stronger, and more physical than Newman....Shall I go on ?

Newman compared to Asomugha (note that Asomugha played 2 more games than Newman)

Newman 50 Tackles, Asomugha 34
Newman 4 interceptions, Asomugha 1

If you are judging a CB on his height and weight alone then that would mean Anthony Henry and Quincy Butler are better than TNew...and everyone knows TNew is better. I know Asomugha is younger but he's not better

by calebsmith on Apr 1, 2008 9:00 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Just to play devil's advocate

I haven't seen Asomugha play much so I can't weigh in on who is better (though all signs point to Asomugha).  But in terms of tackles and INTs, if you only get thrown at 31 times, you don't have many opportunities for those.  I'm not sure how many completions Newman allowed, but a big source of tackles for a CB is completions to the guy he is covering.

by grapejoos on Apr 1, 2008 9:38 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

thank GrapeJoos for logical reply....

My point is....If I had to choose between the two next spring in free agency.....you bet your azz....all 32 teams would choose Asomugha over Newman.....

Fair enough

I'm afraid we may not be able to afford either, but I would make the same choice based on age.   In any case, the point is that it's better to get the miles out of them when they're young and relatively cheap.  Hell, Pacman was a #6 overall pick and even his contract is pretty reasonable at this point.

by grapejoos on Mar 31, 2008 4:35 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Are you suggesting that Jerruh. . .

Doesn't have all the bases covered?  I'm guessing that PacMan's reinstatement is already bagged up or Jerry wouldn't be working this angle.  Terry - you of all people should understand his influence in the league. . .

No official news yet

This is just a rumor posted on Rotowire.

Dallas News reporting no dice on the trade.

We'll post something as soon as something official is announced.

You find out life's this game of inches, so is football. Because in either game - life or football - the margin for error is so small.

Even with packman dont go looking for a backup...

Look for a starter, Henry is older and, who nows if we will be able to keep Newman, and Pacman, welll...its Pacman. He's great and I love him but I wouldnt sacrifice the future of the rest of the team to meet these outrages cornerback saleries. ( but thats another sbject ) Point is we will need another starter, so tery to draft  a starter don't settle for something less, We may need him to start sooner than we would like if something go wrong; and this is a physical game.
