Jerry Jones still thinking about landing a vet WR
Good ol’ Jerry Jones. Lucky for us, the guy can’t stop talking. While not exactly spilling the beans on our draft strategy I think he gives us more of a heads-up than almost any other owner in the league. This time, he talks to Goose Gosselin and reiterates that the Cowboys are not going to be trading up to get Darren McFadden. Nope, he says he can watch the Razorbacks play on Saturdays and there’s no reason to screw up his plan. What plan would that be? Build an offense around Tony Romo and get him as much help as possible. Now, getting McFadden would definitely help the offense, but at what cost? That seems to be what Jerry is thinking; that he can get more done by keeping the two first round picks rather than trading them (along with other picks/players) to get DMac. With the abundance of talent at RB in this year’s draft, he could pick up a Jonathan Stewart or Felix Jones in the first round or he could even wait until the second round where there are still quality backs to be had. What happens with the Pacman deal could decide when we pick a CB, those two positions (RB, CB) tend to dominate the discussion of the first round picks.
But Jerry has another acquisition in mind. Last week, he told Randy Galloway about it and this week he hints at it with Gosselin.
"There might be great value for our team with some of that collateral we have with those [first-round] picks," Jones said. "What if someone wants to give us a hell of a player that really fit and improved our offense? That's the kind of universe I can conjure up.
"We could set up here and get a premium receiver on the other side of Terrell and have a tandem."
Gosselin fills in the details on the plan, something we talked about last week. There are three names that keep popping up in this discussion.
How would Chad Johnson look on the other side of Owens? Or Anquan Boldin? Or Roy Williams? All are Pro Bowl wide receivers. Johnson is 30, Boldin 27 and Williams 26. All might be available when the Cowboys go on the clock at 28.
A first-round draft pick straight up for a Williams or a Boldin might look far more attractive to the Bengals or Lions when they're on the clock than it does today.
Even though Gosselin mixed up the teams with their receivers in that last sentence you get the point. Could one of those teams on draft day be tempted with a first round pick? It seems to be something Jerry will be exploring and pushing to get Romo more weapons.

The latest on Pacman from the Star-T.
"It's probable, if we're going to get something done, we'll do it while we're here at these meetings," Jerry Jones said. "...We've got some more talks we've got to do with the Titans, and we will do that while we're here."
Tennessee is asking for a fourth-round pick this year and a sixth-round pick next year that could become a fifth-rounder based on performance, according to a source. The Cowboys have been unwilling to part with a fourth-round choice, but they could make it enticing to the Titans by throwing in future picks based on Pacman Jones' performance.
PFT.com is posting that other teams have joined the party in terms of courting Pacman. But so far, no one has been able to accurately identify another team and this all appears to be based on a comment by Goodell that some teams have inquired about Pacman’s official status. Calling the league office for clarification is one thing; actively engaging the Titans in trade talks is another. So far, the Cowboys seem to be the only ones actively engaged in trade talks. Dallas is essentially bidding against itself and I’m glad to see Jerry has slowed his roll on this one, the Titans are getting greedy. I’ve said from the beginning that getting Pacman on the cheap is something I would support, but giving away multiple draft picks is a bad move at this point in discussions. Wait the Titans out Jerry, I’m sure they’ll blink first.

The DMN blog has our preseason schedule with approximate dates.
Week 1 (Aug. 7-11): at San Diego
Week 2 (Aug. 14-18): at Denver
Week 3 (Aug. 21-25): vs. Houston
Week 4 (Aug. 28 or 29): vs. Minnesota

Maybe he's just danglin a carrot
out to those teams who are trying to convince the rest of the NFL that their star WRs aren't on the market.

If Jerry was to trade a 1st for a veteran WR...
who would be the best fit between Chad, Bouldin, or the other Roy Williams?
Now Roy is a Texas product, is the biggest of the three as well as the youngest. He's been injured, but nothing serious, and has been shut out of games (but who hasn't?). Playing opposite of T.O., the Dallas offense would look quite powerful and should dominate defenses with smaller DBs.
I have watched Bouldin closely the past few years because I have repeatedly drafted him in my fantasy football leagues. He hits some HUGE games. Some games he'll have 2 catches for 19 yards with 2 touchdowns. Sometimes he'll miss at least a third of the season because of injuries. He's extremely strong, explosive and just a year older (27) than Williams. He can be the stud of the future and plays alot like T.O. with a passion for the game that seems to surpass that of the Detroit guy and is on par with this next guy.
Ocho Cinco may just be a quick fix to the Superbowl. Had the Cowboys had an explosive vet like Chad around to relieve the injured T.O. late this season, they may have scored that last TD against the Giants. This guy is hungry -- he wants to win. He plays with another big star receiver already, yet still manages an occassional 200 to even 300 yard game. Who on the Cowboys does that? At 30, Chad can be around in the post T.O. era if his brazen ways find happiness in Big D. His intense character may be viewed as a team cancer or a shot of passion. Just look at Corey Dillon's career on the Bengals vs. it on the Patriots. Nuff said.
So, who's the better fit?
I'll take either of these guys, but in this order:
Bouldin
Chad
Roy
by Bigrigga31 on Apr 1, 2008 10:53 AM CDT 0 recs
I agree with that order
I think Chad is the best on-the-field compliment to TO, but I have concerns about his attitude and compensation. I just love the way Boldin plays the game. But, I like all 3 of these guys and would happily cheer them on.

The most realistic choice would be
Bouldin. Cinci would take a 8+ mil dollar hit if they traded or released CJ. So that's not happening.
Detroit keeps saying they aren't trading Roy Williams, but I'll believe it when he is still there after the draft.
Bouldin is the player right now I would focus on. He is not happy Fitzgerald received a big contract and he knows they can't afford another deal like that for him. The Cardinals may look to deal him knowing he is not happy. Letting Bryant Johnson go might stop the Cardinals from trading doing it though.

Always have liked Boldin
I followed the Cardinals closely to see how Emmitt would do when he played there... Boldin is a great WR

Ditto
and all of the above. The other side of Boldin is that he has been a real leader in the locker room, a trait unheard of in a talented WR. You can only imagine his potential on a better team. This is the guy I'd love to see Jerry land and with the cap bite that Fitz took out of the Cards, I think AB is a real possibility.

Im wit yall on Boldin.
I absolutely love the guy. I know his forty time isnt the greatest but he gets open deep and he does not get caught. He's in T.O.'s class when it comes to running after the catch.
We've gotta be thinkin win now, so why not. yeah were gonna be cap strapped but if you win the whole thing who cares. There are gonna be a lot of guys who are gonna walk after this season anyway.
With that said that makes this draft all the more crucial. There is a possibilty that for 09 we'll need to replace as many as 3 starters in the secondary, maybe a receiver, maybe a back, maybe a right tackle. I think a few of these future starters are on the roster now, but we cant afford to miss in this draft.
And yeah, we need Pacman.

Sweet Music to My Ears!
Gotta love that Jerry understands successful NFL offenses are built around an elite qb and the passing game. That is where the bulk of our resources should be spent, both salary cap and draft pick resources.
I very much hope that Jerry pursues this route. I would love to get Roy Williams for a first round pick. Use the money that would have been spent to resign Barber to sign Roy Williams long-term. Draft a running back in the first round and let MB3 play out 2008 and leave via free agency. That would be an outstanding plan.
Substituting Bolding or Chad Johnson for Roy Williams would also be great.
by Cowboy Louie on Apr 1, 2008 11:31 AM CDT 0 recs
But you gotta love MBIII
I would hate for Barber to leave this Cowboys team. Drafting a RB high in the 1st or 2nd round would ensure the use of a 2-back system. If so, that would keep Barber at or around the 1,000 yard mark. Perhaps he'll continue his career in Dallas to enjoy a longer career by saving wear on his body.
If he blows up though, and has a 1,400 yard season, there's no way we can let him go.

I do love MB3
Yeah, I'm in the camp with everyone else who loves MB3. He's an exciting player who brings it on each and every play. However, I'm not in the camp that thinks he is essential to keep our offense operating at a high level. On the contrary, I think there are quite a few backs who would be sufficient to provide a solid, credible running game.
In my opinion, the amount of money MB3 will be asking for/commanding will be a bad use of limited salary cap dollars. My philosophy on running backs is draft them, use them for 4-5 years at an inexpensive rate and then let 'em walk after their first contract is up. Draft a few more and start the process over.

I heard he turned down 15 mil in guaranteed
money. If this is true then I don't think he will be resigned. I would not give him anymore than that at this point.

That's very interesting
Wow, I had not heard that before. $15M is the guaranteed amount that Michael Turner signed for in Atlanta. I figured that the Turner deal would be the contract that sort of 'set the bar' for MB3 if Dallas was indeed looking to sign him to a long-term deal. If the Cowboys did offer $15M guaranteed, then they are damn serious about signing him because that is an awful lot of $$$ for a running back.
It is going to be facinating to see how this plays out. As I've indicated before, I think it is critical for Dallas to make a hard decision on MB3 before the draft. And the draft is rapidly creeping up on us.
How awesome it is to be a Cowboys fan during the offseason. Up here in WI, there is nothing on the Packers - a small miracle! At least we have rumors, multiple first round picks, an engaged owner, active players, etc. And perhaps most important of all, this Blog.

Critical to move on him before the draft?
I don't think so. . .I think you can let him play on the restricted deal that was tendered then resign him mid-season if he proves to be what we all want him to be - Consistently abusing teams as a lead back that is spelled by Jonathon Stewart in a two back system.

I think Jerry will repeat his Romo deal for MBIII
"Perform at a high level - and as a starter - for the better part of a season and force me pay you."

I agree with that philosphy, I like Barber as much as the next guy but they take too much of a pounding and few last past 30.

on the dates of training camp yet?
by CowboyBawler4 on Apr 1, 2008 3:43 PM CDT 0 recs
As formidable as it would make our offense
And I think that by adding any of these three, we could potentially be up there with the Patriots-
I can't agree with this sentiment. This team is on the brink of salary cap hell. We've got very little money to spare, young players who will get new contracts very soon, and are expected to compete for the long haul due to said young players.
Therefore, I don't see how we can afford to trade a first round pick which will result in an underpaid player for five or six years for a premium Wideout who will simply supplement a position of strength and result in the farewell of a Newman, Barber, Canty, Colombo, etc.
by BudLight on Apr 1, 2008 4:51 PM CDT 0 recs
I agree
Unless we could somehow trade for Boldin and convince him to play out his contract, this won't work. It will be interesting to see what kind of money can be freed up during renegotiations this year. Let's not forget that Ware needs a new deal soon too, and Hamlin is franchised for this year.
I could see a situation where we traded for Roy Williams or Boldin, they play out this year, we don't bring TO back and sign them to new deals. That might be the right way to do things, but I'd like to keep TO around as long as he's productive. I doubt he'd give any kind of discount.
Overall, I agree with your take. I'm very worried about cap hell. Methinks Jerry has some plans if an uncapped year happens.

Agreed
But I'm not sure how much restructuring for '10 he can do preemptively. The crazy spending will come next offseason and the one after it, not during this one.
Now, if we could somehow persuade a team to take Roy as part of our offer and lessen the rest of our bounty (say, from a first to a second and fourth) I'd weave a welcome mat for our new star receiver.
