Goodbye to Gumbel and Rick Romo
A moment of silence for Bryant Gumbel.
Bryant Gumbel was the NFL Network’s go-to-play-by-play man for two years. He recently decided to forego another season.
Thank God.
Gumbel is an accomplished journalist. He’s the younger brother of another accomplished journalist. But he sucked on the NFL Network and that’s putting it lightly.
Number one, he called Tony Romo " Rick Romo" after the Green Bay game. It sounded like he said a curse word during a Bears-Redskins broadcast. I really don’t know what he was talking about here. Sounds like some fuzzy math.
My problem with Bryant is that ... he’s boring. Really really boring. Like Ben Stein in "Ferris Bueller’s Day Off." I mean, the Dallas-Green Bay game was exciting and I almost dozed off listening to him. And I was in a bar.
The other thing that bugs me about Bryant Gumbel is that he’s kind of a jerk. And some of the things he’s a jerk about are diction and accuracy. He’s super anal about those things. He speaks like my high school English teacher and I hated her. So how do you explain his numerous gaffes on the NFL Network?
And for that matter get rid of Cris Collinsworth too. I still haven’t forgiven him for talking about how ecstatic he was that Dallas lost to Carolina in the playoffs in 1996. He’s had some gaffes himself here and here.
So who replaces Gumbel?
The DMN Blog suggested Greg Gumbel and others. Boo. I’m through with the Gumbel family. Boo. I hate to say it but I don’t want any former Cowboys either. I like Deion but he’s kind of annoying. Emmitt is, well, Emmitt. Don’t speak. Just sit there and look classy. Troy is a little too dry for my tastes.
I’m old school. Give me Dick Enberg and Dan Dierdorf and I’m happy

Thank God!!!
Just as long as they don't replace him with anybody from ESPN like Theisman or Tony Kornhauser. Rotating guest announcers from Rich Eisen's gang would be cool and was pretty interesting last year (except when Faulk kept coughing).
Where's Pat Summerall? Doesn't he have a son or younger brother with?

play by play team ever.

Cosell
When I was growing up, I used to love watching Monday Night Football when Howard Cosell and the gang were in the booth. Phyllis George on the sidelines, I think.

the youngsters won't know this, but
Cosell's halftime hightlights were the only hightlights any fan got to see of games that weren't televised nationally or locally in your area.
As a kid, before DirecTV, ESPN and the internet, MNF halftime hightlights and Cosell were the only way I got to see hightlights of the Cowboys games if they weren't on national TV and music to them were priceless. Cosell did a tremendous job with that segment.

I don't remember a sideline reporter
from Cosell's days. I do remember Phyllis George was on the CBS pre-game show with Brent Musberger, Jimmy The Greek, and Irv Eatman?, I think was his name. Those were the days when they'd just give you the betting line right on the air.

you're thinking of Irv Cross
and yes, George was a CBS analyst, not a MNF sideline reporter. They didn't start sideline reporting during games until the last decade or so.

Deion Sanders
Filled in for Dick Vermeil in the Second half of a game 2 years ago I believe. It was because Vermeil was sick and could barely talk the first half. I thought Sanders did a great job calling the game, it was his first time doing it, he kept it interesting, added some humor, and you are definitely not gonna doze off with Sanders in control.
by stevefs12 on Apr 16, 2008 2:53 PM CDT 0 recs
Oh yeah!
It was Vermeil, not Faulk, who was hacking it up. Deion is good.

Dierdorf blows!!!
If I had a nickel for every time he used the phrase "could be the best in the league that..." I'd be a millionaire.
I would choose Pat Sumerall and Dan Fouts.

I disagree
Dierdorf doesn't blow, he sucks

The two guys that should be in the running
to take over for Bryant Gumbel, who is thee worst play by play guy ever, is Mike patrick, formally of the ESPN Sunday night Crew or the guy who was the play by play guy filling in for Bryant Gumbel, Houstin/KC game this year, his full name escapes me at this point but I remember him doing games in the early eighties for NBC, I think his last name is Hammond. Collinsworth is pretty good as the color man, Pat Summeral is too old now, I think he's in his eighties now and not in the greatest of health, but in his prime with Madden, there was no one better.
by Deke on Apr 16, 2008 3:22 PM CDT 0 recs
Kevin Hammond is better than Patrick IMO

After Summerall & Madden, I'd put Don Criqui & Bob Trumpy, they were a great tandem.

I've Wondered Recently If God Exists
Now, I have proof that there is a higher power out there, and he loves us very much.
I'd rather listen to a baby being beaten to death with a cat that hear Gumbel butcher another Cowboys game.

The best case scenario
Marv Albert and Boomer Eisason do a radio telecast of Monday night football and they do it really well. I would love to see those guys in the booth for the NFLN. Add Collinsworth as the third guy and you're good to go.

Good idea. Except, they can leave Collinsworth out as far as I'm concerned. He is too annoying.

Despite his high irritability factor
Collinsworth is actually quite astute. He would be/is an awesome studio analyst. They should just leave him there and one other guy to talk about the game. Studio shows have way too many people trying to hear themselves talk.

As long as he's not calling a Cowboy game!
Collinsworth is worse than Joe Theeesman with his subtle digs.
