Draft Week: Dallas Cowboys 2008 draft prospects

PrintLess than one week to go my friends. This is draft week; time to look at some of the players the Cowboys may go after in the first round. This is not an exact science but just guesses based on positions of need and estimates about where players may go in the draft.
Let’s start with a running back. I’m going to pass on profiling Darren McFadden because I just don’t think he’ll slide far enough for the Cowboys to seriously make a move and get him. I admit there’s still a tiny sliver of belief that it could happen and my guy Shango is trying to keep the dream alive, but I’m not sold, no matter how I work out the top of the draft I just don’t see McFadden getting past the Jets at #6.
So I’ll move on to the next big name in the running back crop, Rashard Mendenhall.
Likelihood of being a Cowboy: 4.7%
It would take a lot of luck and some questionable decisions by teams in the draft for Mendenhall to drop all the way to #22. Now, if he started to slide into the late teens, there’s a chance Jerry could try to move up and get him but with the depth of RB talent in this draft, and it’s loaded, the Cowboys would probably wait until #22 and see if Mendenhall was still there.
Why I like Mendenhall: Big, fast, seems to have the total package for a running back. Would give us an option if we can't get a long-term deal done with MB3 past this season. Fills a need for this year.
Why I don't like Mendenhall: Short track record of being "the man" at Illinois, could be thought of as a one-year wonder.
He’ll most likely go off the board in the early teens. The Bears might have an interest, Denver could be a landing spot, maybe Detroit , even the Panthers could get in on the act.
While I’d love to have Rashard Mendenhall next year, it just doesn’t seem likely to happen.

I'm throwing this out there, but don't know if
it was said.
It has been reported on NFL Network that Cowboy executives are meeting with Jet executives sunday to discuss a trade. It has not been reported what will be traded, but one can only imagine it will be the draft picks.
Saw it on a Cowboys Message Board so I have no idea if it is true. Did anyone hear this??

Dallas traded up there with McF still on the board and took Mendenhall instead? That would get the crowd goin’!

That's different.
Mike Williams sat out his LAST year of college because he was too young to enter the draft. For a WR, that’s necessary development time.

He's a junior!
He would’ve started his SR. season. Then, would he be considered a 2 year wonder? C’mon, anybody with his talent would come out as a Jr. It’s better for RBs to absorb NFL hits at a young age instead of what they take in college carries.

I know it can be corrected, but what if it's not. I can't stand fumblitis. Has to be the most frustrating trait a player can have.
I agree Tom....that's why DMac is a big IF,,,,,,,
DMac fumbled about 13-15 times last season alone......I don't think Emmitt fumbled that many times in his whole career..
In fact....ALL top 5-6 backs in this draft had at least one time fumbling issues...big question is which ones will continue to have these problems...

Mendenhall sure looks good.
Before I knew he was only a 1 year starter, I thought Mendenhall was the absolute class of the RBs. But, who cares if he was only a 1 year starter?! Less hits on him and he seems to pick his holes with good vision.
Legs like Roger Craig—they never stop running.

DMAC would be a HUGE mistake
because he is not even as good as Mendenhall. Pick the CB at 22 and trade down with 28 to get three picks in the second….RB, Safety, and WO…geez, why are we making it so complicated, fellas?

The Florio report on the Eagles making a major move at WR this week - with the Cowboys and Skins in the hunt for the same player- has me worried. Apparently the WR is Roy Williams.
I hate the draft week rumor mill, but it is hard to ignore. If the Eagles land Williams, I may do something incredibly rash!
