Stephen and Jerry Jones on same page; get a vet WR

I was reading Peter King’s MMQB today and he talked to Stephen Jones about the Cowboys pursuit of a WR this year.

Ran into Cowboys COO and director of player personnel Stephen Jones at the meetings, and he raised a good point about rookie receivers. "I would argue that, other than quarterback, receiver is the toughest position to get players to come in year one and make a real impact,'' Jones said.

Basically, he’s saying the same thing Jerry was saying over the past couple of weeks. The Cowboys want to add a WR but probably not from the draft, instead from a trade to get a veteran. King went through the research and proved what we already know; WR’s rarely make a big impact in their first year. Jerry and Co. believe this team is competing for a Super Bowl in 2008 and want a vet WR to help out.

Hey, head on over to Mocking The Draft because the SB Nation mock draft is moving faster than I anticipated. We’ll probably be picking in a day or two. Right now, with who’s left on the board, I’m looking at Aqib Talib or Felix Jones. But feel free to add your suggestions or try to sway my opinion.

Sometimes you can be too passionate about your football team. Take for instance, this article, where six people ended up stabbed at a birthday party. What were they arguing about that caused the stabbings?

According to police, witnesses said the argument was about the Dallas Cowboys and another team.

I'm not saying it's right, but...
They were probably saying that Tony Romo choked in the playoff game.  I know that always makes me insane.

DC and a vet WR

DO you think #28 for a vet?  And if so Who?

by stxshooter on Apr 7, 2008 12:52 PM CDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Grizz, you might want to consider

Antoine Cason at #22 because I think he's a better prospect than Talib.

From the sounds of Jerry and Stephen, it doesn't look like we'll take a WR at either 22 or 28 and will probably trade either pick for a vet WR.

We should be able to pick a solid RB in the 2nd if you pass on Felix at 22.

Aqib Talib is overrated

I would rather go with Cason.  He's a smart player and a team leader, in addition to be a Thorpe award winner.

and the funny thing about Cason

is that his weakness is supposed to be speed, but he ran a 4.4 at the combine which means he can pretty much run with anyone.

Hear me out...it's long

From what I read about A. Talib is attitude problem/lazy (read it at draftdog I think).  I read that the only games he missed were due to attitude problems.  If the other top CB's are gone at pick #22 I would try to trade down from #22 if possible.  I don't think a trade down from #22 will be possible though.

That leaves RB in my opinion.  If JJ is going to sign MBIII to a big contract or has that as his plan, then I don't want to take a RB at #22.  If JJ is just keeping MBIII for the year and doesn't want to pay a long term 6+ million per year to keep MBIII then take F Jones at #22 for about 2.7 million per year, it's ok with me.  The numbers are just my guesses.

If no trade down available, the top 3 CB's are gone, and JJ wants to keep MBII, no trade available for established WR like Roy W, or Boldin...then I take Brohm at #22.  My reasons are many.  Father time is our current back up qb, so we squeeze 1 last year out of him, so Brohm can have time to learn.  Brohm had different coaches his last year so his numbers dropped, and his team wasn't very good.  2.7 million per year is not a bad price for a back up QB.  He may not last more than an hour on the team because another team may trade with the Boys to get him.  It makes a trade more likely at #28 to go down to the top 1/2 of round #2 (in my opinion for the remaining qb's that other teams need). I think Brohm is a good player, and it would give him time to learn like Romo had (& there is always the M. Schaub possibility like Atlanta did).  Lastly, I do not want to wait 10 years for the Boys to find another QB if Romo were to ever get hurt.

I like CB's Cason or King at #28 (or in the top 1/2 of the second if trade down).

Later picks I like at WR Royal and Hardy.

Talib would be the worst pick

He is a cover 2 CB. Would be a bad fit in our system.  I'm coming around to Cason, but only at #28. #22 would be a reach. #22 is going to be a RB no question, Stewart or Jones.

that would be beyond moronic to draft

a QB in the 1st rd, its not like Romo is even in his 30s yet for crying out loud.

There will be plenty of QBs like Brohm in the next 5 or 6 years.

Cason

Since trading is not an option I vote for Felix Jones at #22.  He's the lightening to MB3's thunder.  Plus he's used to sharing the load.
I would go CB at #28.  Jacksonville or Tennesse may take a CB but it's doubtful both will.  So even if one of them takes Talib that still leaves us with Cason whom many feel is a better talent than Talib. And I havent heard of any character concerns with Cason, unlike Talib.  Let's say for the sake of argument that the Pacman trade finally gets done.  Do we want two guys like Talib and Jones in the same locker room feeding off of each other's bad attitudes?

I've been saying #28 for a vet WR for 2 months

It seems many are on the same page with this topic. Getting someone like Roy Williams, Boldin is far superior than anyone we could draft in the first round.

I'm all for trading either first rounder for vet

I know it may take some riverboat magic from Jerry....But I'd sure like to trade both #22 and #28 for Roy Williams and Detroit's #15 pick....

If we need to sweeten it up with a player....well..Sam Hurd-WR or Miles Austin-WR could be throw in's...or Ayodele-LB, or one of the back up lineman James Marten.

At 15....we sure have a better chance of landing DRC, McKelvin, Mendenhall, or Stewart.

Or at the very least...We are that much closer to trading into the 7-12 range...which would be DRC territory. Add an '09 2nd rounder onto the 15th pick...and we're home sweet home...

Just me playin' GM again....that's what i'd do..lol

Jamaal Charles is better than Felix

he is faster and is tougher than Jones.  Felix is one-dimensional and just takes everything outside, and with 4.47 speed I doubt he will be as successful in the NFL.

At least Charles has proven he could carry the load if MB3 went down and can run inside.

quincy you don't have a clue

Felix Jones ran plenty between the tackles and he was very good on special teams also.

Thanks for the kind words

I only watched a couple of Arkansas games, but the games I did watch I didn't see him running between tackles.

Plus here is a scouting report to back me up:

Needs to show more patience...Won't do much damage between the tackles

Aqib Talib

He's getting slammed by some posters as overrated. Well, every mock I've seen has him as a 1st round pick, if not in the top 20. I don't think he is overrated at #22. He has a bigger upside than Cason (who I like, but not at #22) and has potential to impact immediately as punt returner. I don't think Cason will be much better than he is right now. But, I think with proper coaching from Campo, Talib could be a good to great CB. Or, even if that position never pans out, he would probably make an outstanding FS. A built in back up plan. How safe can you get with a pick?

I don't like any of the RB's at #22. I think that need gets taken care of in the second round.

T-New, shutting down WR's for Dallas since 2003.

Cason is NFL ready as well

and supposedly Talib has problems flipping his hips.  Never watched the kid play so I can't say for sure, but I am just telling you what I have read.

I saw it at the combine

he was horrible in the hip flipping drill, didn't look smooth at all.

I think he's definitely a cover 2 corner or FS type, his man to man skills are not good.

you're right Tom, but...

while Talib has a bigger upside he also has a bigger potential to bust as well, while Cason is the much safer pick.

IMO, you go safe on the 1st day and go for the boom or bust types on day 2.

Another option

I know we are all hoping to trade for a vet WR.  But since this mock doesn't allow for that maybe we should go for Devin Thomas at #22?  The need for a WR doesn't go away just because we cant trade for one.  And the fall off in talent at WR seems to be much greater than at RB or CB.
We would still pick up Cason or Talib at #28.  And then get our RB in the 2nd round.

by WB3forMB3 on Apr 7, 2008 3:21 PM CDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Plus....

I think it's much more realistic that we would have to give up #22 as opposed to #28 to get a guy like Boldin or the other Roy Williams and even then I dont know if it would happen.
