OK, suppose that the guy I wanted to draft at #22, Aqib Talib, is no longer available. If you got to Mocking The Draft, you can see how the picks have gone so far. Now, there is one pick not listed yet, the Redskins at #21, and just suppose that Talib may go to them.
Who should our pick be?
I will take your guys votes into serious consideration and well as consultation with Brandon and Tuna Helper.
I can't say what I'll do yet, but I will try to represent us wisely. Also, note that there are no trades in this mock draft, so we'll be picking at #22 and #28. Keep that in mind as you ponder who to pick here and who may be available at #28. I've put up a poll below with the players who I think we could go for. If a player you like isn't on the list, make a case for him in the comments. I'll have to cutoff the voting later tonight because we have to pick by tomorrow morning.
BTW, I'm assuming no Pacman for this draft. Unless that deal actually happens, I'm looking at the roster as it stands.

Serious consideration at #22
Is given to A. Cason, F. Jones, D. Thomas and K. Phillips.
I don't know how Cason jumped up so high on draft boards, but he, or Flowers, will likely be available at 28 if we are drafting by need.
I think Jones will also be available at 28, and I don't find him worth the investment of our first overall pick even though I would jump at him at 28. Also, I am uncertain because of our current situation with MBIII -- will he stay or go?
For me, that leaves Thomas or Phillips as the picks at 22. I give the edge to Phillips as BPA despite our need at WR and also because of his pedigree. Also, Philips may be the key to resigning both Newman AND Hamlin next year. Nothing against Thomas, but I am naturally hesitant about drafting first-round WRs, even though he is a strong contender if available at 28.

I'm all for drafting Antoine Cason....
Even though I love me some Felix Jones...I'm willing to gamble that he's there at #28...If not...we can aquire Charles, Johnson, or Forte in the second. DB is way more of a NEED to grab one of the elite...and Cason is by far the most experienced, NFL ready DB in this draft class. He can also switch to FS, if needed down the road...If Roy is cut and Hamlin is resigned, and Pacman joins us...I love his versatility...Also takes over at punt returner, in case we don't get Pacman....
note: If we drafted Phillips-S, he can play corner in the nickle and move over to Safety IF Hamlin is not resigned, or Roy Williams is let go.
I am starting to warm up to Devin Thomas-WR, the more and more I research him...BUT....CB remains top of my list...followed by RB.....

I think CB is our top need, but I also think that in the real draft the top 4 CB's, McKelvin, Talib, DRC, and Jenkins, are going to be gone by #22.
Cason is the guy I want at CB. He was as productive as any CB in the nation. The knock on him was that he wasn't as fast as the other top CB's but he ran a 4.49 at the combine which is fast enough for me. Based on production alone he should be getting more pub than he is. The problem is that he'll probably be available at #28. So should we jump the gun and draft him at #22?? Or wait for him at #28??
Personally, I'd wait and take WR Devin Thomas. I'd like to come out of this draft with a potential #1 WR and Thomas is it. Got size, speed, and playmaking ability. I don't think he'll last to #28 either. Imagine coming out of this draft with a potential #1 WR in Thomas and a potential #1 CB in Cason. I think we'd all be happy with that.
BTW, I'd really rather not take Felix Jones in the 1st. 1) There's going to be similar backs available in the 2nd and 3rd rounds, and 2) I personally think that if you draft a RB in the 1st round he should have the potential of being a #1 back at some point. I don't think Jones has that. I'd much rather take a player like RB Matt Forte in the 2nd. I think he could grow into a starter at the position.

I think Brandon Albert OG/OT Virginia would be a better choice than Otah, if you are looking for an o-line candidate.
I think we can declare Cason the official winner of the poll, even with only 4% of precincts reporting.
Did I mention I hate the Redskins? Do they have to spoil our harmless little mock draft fun by purposely selecting the guy we are about to take just to screw with us? I know the were looking over our shoulder at the Cowboys answer sheet. Cheaters!

I am basing my opinion off what I have read from other people so there is a chance I could be wrong. But I guess that is what this time of the year is for: making sweeping generalizations about a player based on minimal first hand knowledge, or in some cases no knowledge at all.

I don't get all the Talib hate
He's a phenomenal cover corner. Whatever flaws he has are slight in the grand scheme of things. He's very productive and plays every facet of the game. He reminds me of a young Anthony Henry, and that's nothing to diminish-Henry was borderline awesome early in his career. Talib can squash the run, he makes plays, and he regularly blankets receivers. He gets beaten big a few times a year, and that's something you have to live with. But It's the reality with every playmaker.
If Talib is there, Grizz, stick with your instincts! Take the man!

he's not a good cover corner
he's a cover 2 corner, he doesn't flip his hips well enough to be a good cover corner, meaning when he's covering a guy one on one he can't turn and run with him very well.
This kid got burned far too many times by average college WRs to be considered a good cover corner, he'll end up being a FS in the NFL.

This is all a moot point,
As Hogs haven dude just took him. However, I stick by my guns on this one; he's too good a player to pass up, even though he doesn't necessarily fit our scheme. He's ready to go, he's versatile, he's talented. We're placing people on way too high a pedestal if we rip on them based on one or two plays that got highlighted on youtube. He gets beaten by average players occasionally. It sucks, but Deoin couldn't cover physical wide receivers who liked to run underneath routes. I realize this is hyperbole and not as big a flaw, but my point stands; there are no flawless players.
And if he projects well as a free safety, I don't have a moment's pause about experimenting there. We're not by any means set at that position.

I know you love DRC, but you have to admit, he's probably the riskiest of the top CB's. Small school guy who shoots up draft boards after the All Star game and combines.
I think Talib might have his flaws, but nothing that good NFL coaching can't fix if he listens to it.
At worst he's our punt returner and FS if he can't handle the CB spot. I think his talent and upside are worth the risk.

I agree Romo9, DRC has the highest potential ceiling, but he has the poorest body of work to go by to predict future success.

Watching DRC
at the Senior Bowl against the big boys, I saw what everyone else sees. Sky's the limit for what he can accomplish, but it's always hard to project these guys from small schools regardless of the position.
I watched the video the DMN blog had of Todd McShay and Jeremy Green discussing the top 4 CB's. The both mentioned how unusual it was that the top 3 guys, McKelvin, DRC, and Jenkins were all small school guys. They mentioned that it's a little harder to project these guys because they all played mostly man coverage all the time in college. More so than they would in the NFL. I'm not a scout by any means but I hardly think experience/ability in man coverage could be construed as a negative.
BTW, as far as DRC is concerned, is it true that he has only one kidney?? Or is that just a rumor?? Will it affect him at all at the next level??

I'll be disapopointed if we draft him in the first, he's a high second rounder at best. If we trade down into the second...I'd still pass on him..

he's a showboatin' gambler with character flaws...looked very akward in drills at combine....I say is position is still FS in the NFL....a good one at that...but he is not a man to man cover corner....Tampa should draft him.

If the top 4 CB's are gone, I would definitely take Cason to make sure Dallas gets a quality CB.
If Dallas trades #28 for a vet WR (Williams or Boldin) the next chance to get a player will be in the second round where we probably pick up a RB.

Devin Thomas would be my pick
Although I feel DB is a bigger need for us than WR, I think Thomas is clearly the best player left on the board. He's the one player left with superstar potential, and I don't see any flaws to his profile other than the small sample size. Cason will probably be there at 28.

The way I read that, with "Standback" Stanback, Hurd and Crayton, they think they are OK and would only consider a known quantity, as in FA or trade, to be a homerun.

A guy like Thomas could come in and probably fight for the #2 WR spot right away. He's also got the potential to replace TO down the road. Some of these other WR's like Manningham IMO, will never be more than good #2 guys. I guess I just like drafting guys who have the potential to be #1 guys.

We need to grab a receiver and Thomas is the best one on the board. Cason or Flowers (Im not even considering Talib) will most likely still be there at #28.
Then we go RB in the 2nd because of the depth of talent at this position.

I think he's going
to go at the beginning of the 3rd if we don't take him. That's not much of a reach to pick him up at the end of the 2nd round at #61. Depending on how the rest of the draft plays out, several of the teams picking at the beginning of the 3rd round could all use RB's. Forte's 6 foot 1 inches, 217 lbs, runs a 4.46 forty yard dash, and was extremely productive in college, even though I'll admit that it was a smaller school. He's also a good receiver out of the backfield. Looked very good at the Senior Bowl. Just MO, but I think he's got the potential to be a starter at the next level too.

Tashard Choice too. IMO, he was the best RB at the Senior Bowl. He gets dropped a little 'cause he's not quite as fast as the other RB's like Forte or Kevin Smith. He also put up some good numbers against top notch teams like Clemson and Georgia. That being said, he'll probably still be there for our 3rd round pick.

I think either Flowers or Kenny Phillips is the pick here at DB. I've seen all those Cason youtube highlights, and I gotta tell you -- Flowers look like more of a playmaker. Cason, though, does look consistent and more of a safe pick.

I know we all want to win now...
But the future can not be ignored totally. We are old at receiver, and Thomas should be a stud in the future. Plus he helps the return game right now, which is more important than most people are willing to admit.
Besides, I think he can help now in the offense. I dont expect the kid to catch 75 balls but, his kind of size and speed can still dictate coverage. I think he fits nice as the 3rd receiver (outside though, with Pat in the slot) Say he catches 20-25 balls, and forces some honest defense. Thats a big contribution.
I dont really like the pick, but assuming we are stuck there with those players on the board, why take a corner of lesser value, just because he's a corner?

He gets lost in the future WR discussions, but I don't think the Cowboys would have used an early 4th round pick on him last year if they really didn't believe he would contribute this year or next as a WR.
Hopefully he can get on the field this season as WR/KR

I have very high hopes for Stanback....I liked what limited action I saw...He'll be completely healthy this year....watch out for this guy...wait one more year for top WR draft pick....It's either a vet or forget it...

I've got high hopes for him as well, I just feel there is gonna be some house cleaning at receiver in the next few years, and I would love to see Stanback starting across from Thomas with Crayton in the slot.

this is the year...he's had a complete year to learn the system, get healthy, and see what he has...I already have him ahead of Hurd and Austin on the depth chart...If we trade for Roy Williams, Aquain Boldin, or Chad Johnson, I'd like to see Stanback push Crayton for time at the slot.
Crayton lost alot of my respect with that pitiful experience against the Giants...

I voted for Felix Jones with the assumption that Cason would still be available at 28. Many mock drafts that I've seen don't even have him in the 1st round.
However, I would agree with many here that CB is the most important thing in the draft. We can't count on Henry being healthy all year long and we don't have anyone else should one or both starters go down.

It's a real shame...
..you can't trade. I guess that would defeat the purpose of it thought (assigning a value range to players and hearing about team needs from people who "know").
Still, I'm tempted to say, if the top 4 CB's are gone, see if you can't do a repeat deal of last year with Atlanta. Last year's Brady Quinn becomes this year's Brian Brohm or Joe Flacco.
With that, you could still probably get Cason and one of the Jones/Johnson/Charles.

I like that draft
I might rather go with Tyvonn Branch in the fourth instead of Bell and Justin King instead of Porter if he lasts long enough. I am also starting to warm up to a Pacman to Dallas trade. I like Hester alot, great leadership and a team player, but I don't know about runningback. He may be a versatile FB in the pros.

able to hold his own pass protecting, and chip blocks,and able to get a lead block, but also adds dynamic offensive skills, a tough gritty runner, and a great 3rd down FB option...hence h-back...This would allow us to carry only 1 true FB in Anderson, and Hester can back up MBIII & F Jones.
Hester is like Ron Springs...for all the old timers here...lol
Porter is better than King....period.
I only chose Beau Bell cuz the Boys are interested in him...I like him, was on my original December mock. and we will need depth at ILB, as Ayodele is as good as gone.
And if we don't grab a vet WR in a trade in round one...our 4th round pick should be Will Franklin-WR Missouri 6'2" 214lbs...4.37 40, 40" vert, good hands, deep threat. !!!

I like Porter too.
He's got excellent man cover skills. At the Senior Bowl he really impressed me. I only saw one flaw. Mayock and the position coaches would get on him for not leaning into the WR's on the deep passes. He'd have perfect coverage except for that. He'd look back for the ball and was right on the WR. The ball had to be perfectly placed to get past him. He's also got great speed and was very productive last year. He's a ball hawk too. I think he'd contribute as a nickel CB right off the bat and would challenge for Henry's job next year. I'll guarantee going up against Hardy in practice helped him immensely.
Being from Missouri I got to see quite a bit of Will Franklin. He was overshadowed by the two great TE's and rookie sensation Macklin, but he's an underrated prospect right now. If he's available in the 4th I say we jump all over him.

and yes, he was overshadowed greatly by Rucker, Coffman, and Maclin, for good reason. If we don't get a WR this year I would kill for Maclin next year.

He's a true weapon. PR's, KR's, and at WR. If he has another year like last year he'll be competing for the Heisman.
