Oklahoma Pro Day results (Read: Smith and Kelly)
As many of my fellow manic draft followers surely were aware of, OU's day occured today. This is significant because two projected first rounders and much-discussed potential Cowboys had yet to ply their craft at the combine. Reggie Smith and malcolm Kelly did, however, participte in their school's pro day. And judging from the reported results, they may both regret that move. I couldn't find a concrete source for this information, but It's being reported on Scott Wright's draft site forums that Kelly ran a 4.77 and 4.75, Smith a 4.67 and 4.65. Scott confirmed this later on in the post.
This should drop their stocks substantially. It seems as if Kelly is either far less explosive than initially thought or is still suffering from the effects of a lingering injury, and Smith is not quite the freakish athlete he has been made out to be.
Update:NFL.com has their report up.

If those times are true then Kelly is definitely
out of the first rd, no way any team takes a WR that high that can't run, he'll be a 2nd or 3rd rounder at best.

Wow!
I'm not one to base everything on the 40, but those are some really slow times for a projected 1st-round WR.

I bet DETROIT takes him. LOL

Kelly still has to be hurting...
Having watched him for 3 years, there's no way he's damn near a 4.8 guy...
I don't buy into 40 times at all, but like always, these times will probably be blown out of proportion. If the Cowboys can get him in the second, they need to. He's not a great prospect, but he could end up being the best receiver out of this draft...

What?
The guy on field looks at least a 4.5 40 guy. If we could get him early in the second I'd say go for it, I still think he could develop into a very good WR one day.

wow...hardly inspiring....both go 2nd round.
Both are great talents though...A steal to get either Kelly or Smith in the second round.

Interesting read on Malcolm Kelly.
Here you have it over on http://www.Draftdaddy.com
Former Oklahoma wide receiver Malcolm Kelly, who has been hyped as a Top 10 pick by many in the mainstream media, has run in the 4.7's at his Pro Day. Things got so bad, his agent reportedly lost control and had to be ejected from Sooners' Pro Day!
LOL...The dude just saw millions evaporate into thin air....
DD.comment: This is another reason to frequent Draft Daddy's blog over the "pay sites" littered with "false scouts". Since 2007 we've quoted 4 or 5 actual N.F.L. scouts in this blog regarding Malcolm Kelly and not one ever mentioned him as a first round pick. Not one! In 2007, one A.F.C. scout even compared him to former Texas Tech star Jarret Hicks (size/speedwise), who went undrafted. Also, we once reported his coaches at Oklahoma, who know his speed better than anyone else, begged Kelly to stay in school, feeling he was a 4th round caliber player and he needed to improve.
Now, with this said, Kelly is a solid citizen and a good football player. So there is no reason he can't be drafted in the middle rounds (3rd to 5th) and carve out a solid N.F.L. career. But a Top 10 pick, who ever came up with that?

Over at Mocking the Draft...
MattMiller says that Kelly's agent was upset that OU changed the surface from Astroturf to Fieldturf.
I'm not very familiar with the nuances between the two -- does anyone know if that would make a big difference?

Field Turf is slow....similiar to grass...
Although I really don't take 40 speeds into final evaluation...It's football speed that matters...By watching film, Kelly and Smith are faster players than their 40's indicate...
Astro turf....You could knock off at least a .10 of a second off those reported times if they were on the fast track surface..This will drop them both...but not drastically...still go in the late first, early to mid second rounds...neither make it past Dallas at #61....you can bet on that..

Kelly and Smith are both second rounders now
I don't think Smith will drop too far, he's probably projected to the middle of round 2. Kelly, however, will be lucky to go at the end of day one. I am of the belief that 40 time is overrated, but a speed like this is stock-wrecking.
by BudLight on Apr 9, 2008 5:50 PM CDT reply actions 0 recs
Reggie Smith is faster than that 40 time
I think he must not be all the way back from the broken toe.
I'm surprised Kelly did so poorly, I watched him play many times, and while not a burner, that 40 time is crappy. I guess he will fit in as a possession receiver, that will drop him down on draft boards.

How about this for our first 3 picks?
Cason, Jones and Kelly. Boom -- CB, RB and WR right there!
by goodjobtimmyheresabluestar on Apr 9, 2008 6:30 PM CDT reply actions 0 recs
the only one of those three that I like is Cason
I think both Felix and Malcolm are not good value nor players that will produce up to expectations of a 1st rounder and a 2nd rounder respectively.

ehh ?

Are you telling me that F Jones is going. . .
To produce like a first rd player? You presume him to be as integral as a Joseph Addai or a Lawrence Maroney? Me personally, he's Julius Jones in a lighter body.
As for Malcolm - that's not even a Deverey Henderson, let alone a second round WR. Neither of these guys are of interest to me in the spaces that they are being projected.

Not my ideal draft
Despite the poor 40s, Kelly has been a good player in college with a good rep to boot. I doubt he'll last till our 2nd round pick, so I value him as a decent pick if we get him at 61. Most likely, he'll be the best WR left. The only knock is his injury status.

Agree
I think at worst case, he's Marques Colston.

Worst case?
If he's Marques Colston, I'd be beyond ecstatic. Dude's a true #1 receiver.

And one of the top young WRs in the League!
by JerrodWheeler on Apr 10, 2008 6:34 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
geez man open your eyes
Felix Jones is a first rounder all the way. Go watch some tape.
by Cowboys81 on Apr 10, 2008 12:10 AM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
lighter body ?...he's the same size as JuJo...
eh...i'm done defending him.....5,000 + total yards in the SEC in 3 seasons, all while playing in the shadows of DMac....nobody has ever produced more with less touches than this guy...period....not a first rounder ? ...ok....he'd be a top 5 pick in the '09 draft, if he stayed in school...
by BoyzRback07 on Apr 10, 2008 6:29 AM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
Nobody did more than Kijana Carter either. . .
Didn't make him a great pro. I'm not a fan of Felix in the first round. . .just my gig.
by JerrodWheeler on Apr 10, 2008 6:35 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
lol....you got a lonely following...
too bad nobody in pro football feels the same way about him..otherwise we'd get him at #61...
by BoyzRback07 on Apr 10, 2008 7:09 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
thats only because he blew out his knees
Carter was an awesome talent before he got hurt.
by Terry on Apr 10, 2008 9:19 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
I think Kelly is this year's version
of Mike Williams, really productive college WR who simply doesn't have the speed, qucikness or burst to separate from pro CBs.
I wouldn't touch this guy on the first day as he's clearly just a possession receiver.
by Terry on Apr 9, 2008 7:26 PM CDT reply actions 0 recs
couldn't agree more

Kelly doesn't lack the ability to seperate
Anyone who's watched OU football, or even followed it in a detached manner, can attest to this. I'm worried by the 40 time, no doubt, but more because I'm worrying about whether his knee injury is debilitating and recurring.

Kelly?
Cowboys | Team showing strong interest in M. Kelly
Wed, 9 Apr 2008 18:50:34 -0700
John Murphy, Yahoo! Sports, reports the Dallas Cowboys are showing strong interest in University of Oklahoma WR Malcolm Kelly.
I sure hope not. I'm not touching this kid until the 3rd round at least.
by Cowboys81 on Apr 10, 2008 12:32 AM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
Well, keep this in mind
Interest doesn't necessarily mean that they're high on him. I firmly believe that they're intrigued by what he brings to the table, so what they're currently doing is finding more about his physical well-being. Theyr'e going to bring along an army of Docs, and if they're comfortable with the state of his knee, they'll try and pick him up. If his injury is similar to Jonathan Stewart's (In the sense that he'll be ready for the season, not the worrying sense that it may be recurring) they may take a flyer on him. If they think It'll effect him for a while, they'll pass.
by BudLight on Apr 10, 2008 7:44 AM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
Yep
And if you read the link, there are about 10 teams showing "strong" interest in Kelly.

Yeah, saw those 40 times.
Yikes and Yikes.

I for one a a big MK fan
The dude will catch anything that's thrown his way. The speed issue isn't an issue to me because of this. I don't think I'd take him in the first given our other needs but I'd have to stop really think it through before passing on him.
Worst case scenario, he can hype the team before the games with some good ol' freestylin
