Cowboys vs. Eagles: Hot topics after the game
We didn’t even score a TD. That’s the part that I just can’t believe, this high-powered offense being shutout of the endzone. I truly didn’t believe that could happen this year. Such hubris.
Here are my hot topics after the game.
Tony Romo – No matter how good you are, every once in a while you’re going to fall flat on your face. Tony Romo is no different. He just didn’t have it in this game. From the very start he was erratic, missing T.O. on a wide-open bomb. It never got any better. He was getting protection at the beginning and for most of the game but he couldn’t find his targets. Credit the Philadelphia defense for playing a heck of a game but Romo had a lot of opportunities that he just missed. He did hurt his thumb in the second-half but his passing was no different then than it was earlier. He forced some throws into traffic to T.O. and they were turned into three INT’s. I’m confident that Romo will bounce back and the word is his thumb will be fine. I guess we have to give Romo the pass on this one considering the season he’s had, but we can’t afford it two weeks in a row.
Jason Garrett – I don’t know for sure, but I think the Cowboys will probably regret abandoning the running game so early and so completely in this game. It was obvious Romo was struggling and the defense was doing everything required to keep the Cowboys in the game. Jason Garrett might have learned a lesson in this game, as long as the score isn’t prohibitive, you can run the ball. Especially when your QB is having one of his worst games. Again, Garrett gets my free pass on this one for his work this season but he should definitely consider the run a little more the rest of the year.
Defense – They were outstanding. Every time it looked the Eagles could put the game away they stood up and gave the offense another chance. Chance after chance, until the last drive when they finally gave out. They sacked McNabb four times and they harassed him on others. They did a pretty good job on Brian Westbrook, at least they limited his damage. A week after some shaky play they looked like a championship-caliber defense today. There was just no help from the offense.
Injuries – Well, the early word is that it’s not as bad as we thought. The big one is the Andre Gurode injury. Without him in the middle our excellent line play could suffer. It should be noted that all four of the Eagles’ sacks came at the end when Gurode was out. Luckily, it looks like a sprained knee and he could possibly be OK. Chris Canty also had a sprained knee, but one article said he was questionable to return in that game so it must not be that bad. Pat Watkins has a regular ankle sprain and Romo’s thumb injury is said to be minor. MRI for Gurode tomorrow so let’s pray that it turns out OK.
Public perception – You’re going to see a lot of stories about how the Cowboys are not the favorites anymore in the NFC. Pundits will question whether this team really has it and what’s wrong with Romo. The Green Bay Packers will be the darlings of the NFC. We’ll drop to #4 or so in all the Power Rankings. Talk radio will have a field day at our expense. Forget it about it. None of it will matter unless we go out next week and lose again. This is still the same team that went 12-1 and had the 2nd most powerful offense in the league. One game is never reason to panic unless it’s an elimination game. This wasn’t. Now if it happens again, then I’ll listen. Until then, I still have the same faith in this team that I did before this Sunday.
A loss is a good thing? - As for this loss being considered a good thing, I'm usually not one to go in for that. I think every loss is a bad thing. But, sometimes maybe a loss does focus a team again. Only the future will decide if it's a good thing, Romo explains:
"We made too many mental mistakes. If we win the Super Bowl, the loss was a good thing. If we lose in the first round of the playoffs, it was not a good thing."

IMO, losing is never 'good'
but if you look back and see all your mistakes and fix them and become better for it, then the loss becomes something that you can accept in the long run. The key is to learn from it.

Good news about the injuries
Gurode is critical, and I'm glad "The Thumb" isn't too bad. Another less mentioned injury is Witten hurting his neck. But any guy that can run 20 yards after the catch helmet-less is studly enough to play thru a neck twinge.

What running game ???????????????????????????????
first they don't have a RB that can actually run away from anybody - you think MBIII can out run some one on a 20 or a 40 yard run - I don't think so

Thanks
Thanks Grizz for always having good recaps of the game and the cowboys in general. You are almost always right on with your summaries couldn't agree with you more. That's why I always come here first for all my cowboys updates. Keep up the great work we appreciate it.

As always, U hit every nail on the head, Grizz...
Keepin' that prayer vigil on a good report for Andre Gurode.
We'll need him for da haul...

I will be happy if
Julius Jones doesn't play for the Cowboys ever again.
I am not a JJ hater but damn he just sucks. He has had 14 games this season to prove himself but he hasn't done much. When he is in the game, the team seems to be flat.
Give Barber the ball 30 times and see what he can do for you.

Agreed
As usual, a great summary.
I heard T.O. in the postgame interview say something about "maybe it is a good thing" and I can understand that perspective, and it is probably a useful one for him to have in particular.
Of course whenever you lose (and even when you win) there are lessons to be learned, and thinking of what you can learn from a loss and how it might be beneficial in the long run helps make it more acceptable.
But not having a loss is a better thing!
And of course a loss is a only 'good' thing when you have a lot of wins, in a row. For just about any other team in the league right now, there's no way they could interpret a loss as a 'good' thing. This loss, only if combined with others, could end up costing us one home game in the playoffs. But most likely it will cost us nothing in terms of the playoff position. We won our bye this week in spite of losing, because of everything that went before. And we still have the advantage for home field. Plus we don't have the prospect of an undefeated season as an expectation, either! So we can absorb this loss relatively painlessly (injuries are another thing, of course, but hopefully it seems we have dodged some bullets there, too), and we have the luxury of looking at it from the perspective of how it will help protect against overconfidence, and highlight areas that need particular coaching and practice, and help focus the team going into the playoffs.
Miami's game today puts into perspective what a win and a loss can mean. Was there any team today more elated and fulfilled with a win? Watching the highlights, I have to think that was that the most satisfying win of the day for the players and the fans. Yet the result is a 1-13 record! But they are overjoyed! And everyone (but Raven's fans) can't help but smiling watching it. They won't go undefeated! That is cause for major celebration!
Going 12-2 won't get me too disappointed.
I just hope they do in fact learn from this loss, and starting next week, and for the rest of the season, we see the offense AND the defense BOTH play up to their potential.
by scottmaui on Dec 17, 2007 2:43 AM CST 0 recs
I think that's what TO meant
It could turn out to be better than winning because if the offense was beginning to think too much of bad little itself, better to find out before the "one and done" phase of the season. And he's right. The team can win out and still never have to visit Lambeau Field. So nothing real was lost except perhaps a little hubris on the offensive side of the ball.
The defense has been reminded three or four times this season that they have a lot of work to do. This is a first for the offense. I'm all for it, as long as they come out swinging next week.
Anyone know the votive candle details for a Center? I think it's two candles, but is it St Rita for Healing of Wounds or would it be St. Sebastian for Athletes? I get so confused...

Defense
played great - well enough to win any game but this one - but one bone to pick that I've seen all season. Third and long and they go with a four-man rush, allowing the Eagles to pick up a long first and essentially end the game. My normal, thoughtful analytical response is always "WTF Wade??".
Also did anyone else notice that Miles Austin is now being licked away from? Apparently we have the next Hester on our roster...

My Sentiments Exactly
Romo, obviously, was just horrible. Jerry Jones should never allow his flavor of the month girlfriend in Texas Stadium. The cameras switching to that bubblehead every 5 seconds drove me nuts.
Jason Garrett: worst playcalling of his young career. That rollout and pass to TO was just dreadful and unbearably obvious. There were a few negative runs, but abandoning the running game altogether was foolish.
Kudos defense. They have some pride after getting sliced to pieces by Detroit.
I too will say a prayer for Gurode & Canty.
And yes, I'm keeping my radio off sports radio today. The Monday morning quarterbacks are going to be unbearable. The Cowboys win over Green Bay will suddenly have never happened, Romo will be an unhearalded quarterback, Wade will be an average coach who can't win a big game (not like this one was), and Jason Garret will still have a lot to learn. I HATE YOU ESPN.

You were right about our rankings going down.
Rick Gosselins, the Cowboys "biggest supporter", has the Cowboys at #4 behind N.E., Green Bay, and the Colts???.

Strange observation?
This may be a strange observation. But, I don't remember seeing Romo smile during this game ... at all. I know the thumb was supposedly a problem in the second half, but I really didn't see a difference in his throws. I think he just took himself way too seriously and it broke his game.
by jcircadian on Dec 17, 2007 8:54 AM CST 0 recs
I'm going full blackout
but for BTB, until Carolina. It just isn't worth the aggravation. All I want is an update on the injuries.
Romo has taken pressure off this defense all year. They owed him anyways.
He'll be back. I agree with some others that much of the TO stuff looked forced. That worries me a bit.
I also think the Cowboys run blocking leaves something to be desired. I don't put it all on JJ.

We were due for a loss
unless you're the Pats, its tough winning that many games in a row, evetually you're going to have a let down or just a bad game. It happens, no big deal.
The loss can be looked upon as a good thing because the team can rededicate itself to being more focused. I think after clinching a division champiosnhip its human nature to have a letdown. They're still a young team don't forget.
Still, I think Romo wins the game at the end if he's healthy just like he did at Buffalo, but its hard being accurate with a bad thumb. Anyone who's ever thrown a football should know that.
The great thing is that the Cowboys are still in control of their own destiny, if they beat the Panthers and Redskins they get the number #1 seed. If they bounce back, as I'm sure they will, that shouldn't be a problem.

I am blaming
the Celebrity Bimbo Curse.
Last year when the Eagles came to Texas Stadium, Romo had a juicy date from the pages of People magazine, and his game went down the tubes.
Once again, Tony's celebrity squeeze is in the stands (wearing a pink #9, no less) and his game is in the crapper.
Please, Tony, lay off the celebrity trim until the off season.

thats just plain stupid and idiotic.. Underwood attended the Thanksgiving game last season and Romo threw for 5 TDs.

the girlfriend angle...
is just a funny angle....there's no truth to it....it's just something reporters can point to make the story juicier.......i'm more concerned about the Moore angle....it would suck if the QB we cut kept us from the top seed in the NFC...

Not as Romo's date
Carrie was there at Thanksgiving to sing the national anthem and met Tony. She did attend the Christmas day game as his date though, against the Eagles, and he did horrible and we lost.
Yesterday was de ja vu. Romo+date in attendance+Eagles = Loss for Cowboys.
No one really believes this. It is just a coincidence, but it gives us something to complain about (i.e. our QB's women) instead of his outright, horrible performance.

Carrie Underwood
Sophia Bush
Jessica Simpson
Now that's a HOT List I'd love to have... while being the Young Stud Starting QB for America's Team.
Who wouldn't want that?!?!

we shouldn't be complaining
Tony has spoiled us with all of his near flawless perfomances this season. I think all players have off days every once in and while, especially when an injury makes it worse halfway throughout the game.
We're going to live or die with Romo so complaining and bitching about about his performance, for whatever reason, won't do any good.
The Carloina game is 5 days away, I say we should just look forward to that game and just forget about the game Sunday.

I'm sorry but we aren't going to treat Romo differently from other players. When he plays poorly we are going to note it and discuss it, just like every other player. We all know how you feel about Romo and that any criticism of him doesn't sit well with you, but he's a player on the team. As such, most of us will discuss the good and the bad. You'll just have to roll with it this week.

As for the Jessica Simpson thing
I think most people are just having some fun. Who knows what the dynamic is there.
But, for everybody, I know we'll talk about Jessica as long as she's dating Romo. Let's try to keep it somewhat above board. Overt sexual references and trashing a person in a mean-spirited way is not what we're about here.
So keep it a little respectable everybody, after all, this blog is really about football.

The second part about Jessica
was more of preemptive warning about things not getting out of hand with reference to her. Just a general 'hey BTB readers, talking about Jessica is OK, just don't let this turn into something ugly'.
It had nothing to do with you specifically, Terry. Sorry for the confusion.

thats okay Grizz, I just know
I don't comment on things like that.
I'm just upset if bloggers here actually think Simpson was a distraction to Romo. You'd think real fans would realize he's actually a mature professional instead a high school kid.
I'm sure if he wasn't dating a celebrity and she attended the game there would be nothing said of it but it would be the exact same scenario.
Actually, Romo brought a date to the Pats game and he played well in that game but nobody said anything because the girl wasn't famous.
I know because they drove right past me leaving the stadium after the game.

No offense, Ark... but that's ridiculous
We only lost 10-6.
Romo has put us in a position to at least have a chance to win most every ballgame.
Yes, he had an off game, but hey, he's human.
And like Grizz said, someone proven of his calibur gets a free pass as long as they bounce back the following week... which he has done up to this point.
Oh, and regarding Matt Moore -- as much as I wanted us to keep him on our roster -- the only reason he's starting in Carolina is due to the injuries to Jake Delhomme, David Carr, and Vinny Testaverde.
Just sayin' -- no disrespect intended...

Dear Tony
Jessica will still be jonesin' for you AFTER the season. She's not going anywhere as long as you're getting fat paychecks, you're QB1 for America's team and you're getting more press than her ex Nick. Let her watch the games on TV with her pink #9 and if you just can't resist...keep it on the DL. Hey, I can only imagine what's it's like now (and I do mean imagine)...must be a buffet of babes that luv them some Tony...heck they're probably not all even women for that matter, but just visualize the pickin's if you win the big one. You pull that win off and I'll even be in the stands holding a "Marry me Tony" sign. You've been an absolute joy to watch this season and if ANYBODY deserves a free pass for a bad day at the office, it's you. Rest that thumb, send Jessica home and let's get ready for Saturday.
