Indispensable Dallas Cowboys

Matt Mosley, over at Hashmarks, is pumping up some interest in this article by Jeffri Chadiha about players who are the most indispensable to their teams. These are the guys you can’t win without. When no Cowboys player made his list of only 10 guys, I thought about who is the most indispensable Cowboy. The answer was too obvious, at least for me. Doesn’t it have to be Tony Romo? Looking at the choices of players we have on our roster today, the number one guy we have to have going into 2007 is Tony Romo. Brad Johnson is the only viable alternative, and he’s here to hold the clipboard and be a veteran presence. At his age, he’s not going to lead this team anywhere over the course of a season, he’s here as insurance for a game or two. Besides, we’ve been hearing all about Jason Garrett’s offense and the fact that the Cowboys want to go deep. By all accounts, Johnson wasn’t showing much arm-strength in minicamps. Romo is the guy they need to run this offense; he has to be the most indispensable Cowboy. No?

If I take him out of the equation, then it gets more interesting. Here are some candidates who come to mind and at the end the one who is the most indispensable, well, 2nd-most indispensable.

Flozell Adams – I only bring this up because it’s the left tackle position, and we don’t have an experienced backup among the other tackles. But we do have a guard, Leonard Davis, who could play tackle even though we don’t really want that to happen. Maybe Pat McQuistan could fill in and not be a major drop-off. After all, we weren’t that happy with Flozell’s play last year, anyway.

Jason Ferguson – I thought about Fergie, because we have no experienced backup. But, I do think between Jay Ratliff, Stephen Bowen, maybe even Marcus Spears, they could do a relatively good job of filling in if needed.

Jason Witten – Is there a TE capable of putting pressure on a defense in the passing game besides Witten? Anthony Fasano hasn’t shown it yet, and the Cowboys wouldn’t be replacing an ordinary TE, but one who is among the elite in the game.

Andre Gurode – There’s not a whole lot behind the guy, and this is a crucial position. He handles the ball on every offensive play, he needs to get it into the hands of the QB flawlessly every time, and he needs to make the line calls, besides being able to make his block. Right now, the backup situation is grim.

DeMarcus Ware – This was my first inclination after getting past Tony Romo. He’s the guy who has to bring the pressure for the Cowboys to succeed. He’s so gifted physically; it’s only a matter of time before he consistently dominates. But, we do have Greg Ellis (hopefully healthy enough to contribute), we brought on Anthony Spencer, and we already had Kevin Burnett and Bobby Carpenter if needed. Life without Ware would be a major drag, but at least we have some players to potentially step up.

Terence Newman – Here’s my choice. Without Newman, what could we do at the cornerback position? He’s the best player back there and a guy who makes the rest of the secondary better just by his presence. Aaron Glenn would probably be the replacement, but he is a small corner who is getting up in years, and was average, at best, over the last part of 2006. Then you’d have a nickel cornerback from either a rookie or some vets who rarely play defense. We’re trying to patch up our secondary now, without Newman, the hole would probably be too big to patch up.

And along that same theme of the secondary, here’s Adam Schein on nine players or coaches who are under pressure to perform this year. The Cowboys made the list with the only "group of players" who are under scrutiny this year.

Dallas Defensive Backs
Forget any other unit on the field for the Cowboys last year. The defensive backs were the main reason why Dallas fizzled down the stretch. This year, there will be no excuses. A consistent pass rush is the best friend of a defensive back, and with Wade Phillips running the Cowboys, you know the opposing quarterbacks will be hurried consistently. I still believe in Anthony Henry. The physical cornerback was playing hurt last year. Roy Williams can be more disciplined. Ken Hamlin fills an enormous void at safety.

Schein didn’t even have to mention what is so clearly obvious, it’s not all the defensive backs who need to improve, it’s just the ones not named Terence Newman.

I’d like to call your attention to Slamman’s diary about the defensive line. Boy, talk about going in-depth on a subject. It’s a good read, so check it out and drop a comment. Welcome to the blog Slamman, and thanks for the reading material.

A swing and a miss, Grizz

The most indispensible player is clearly, obviously "Slash" Folk. I'm trying to be patient here, but no one seems to be catching on...

I think after Romo, I consider Ware and Newman as the two guys whose loss would doom the season to mediocrity, but I don't think I could choose one over the other, which makes some sense. Pass pressure and pass coverage are so inter-related.

you're absolutely right Grizz

No question Romo is by far and away the most indispensable player on the team, it isn't even close. If Romo goes down and Johnson takes over, we're lucky to win 4 or 5 games, and I mean lucky. My 4 year old newphew has more arm strength than Johnson.

After Tony, I have to go with both Ware and Newman as  equally indispensable. Ware is a player opposing OC's have to account for on every play and there isn't anyone who could effectively replace him.

Same with Newman. Aaron Glenn is tough for an old wily vet, but he's not in Newman's league.

I have these guys ahead of Adams and Fergy because I believe McQuistan and Ratliff could step up if need be and they're quite possibly their future replacements anyway.

I didn't include Witten because I think Fasano will be much improved from last season and TEs are more of a luxury than a necessity for an offense to be effective, especially considering the talent we have at WR.

Johnson

I would disagree with the statement that we would be lucky to win 4 or 5 games with Johnson. God help us we never have to find out, but I think with the talent on both sides of the ball and especially in the skill positions on offense, that this would still be at least a 9 win team with Johnson at the helm. Again, I hope neither of us every has to be proven right, but I am comfortable with Johnson as our back-up.

First to six!!!

no way

he doesn't have the arm strength anymore. To go .500 or better with Johnson we would need the defense to be better than the '85 Bears.

Problem with Johnson

is that teams will know what throws he can't make and that'll make playing defense a much easier task. It basically eliminates certain plays.

On the other hand, Johnson won't make a lot of mistakes, so I think he could managed the teeam to an 8 win season. But that's really not enough for a team that thinks it can compete for the NFC.

Romo and Newman, by far

Romo is definately the most indispensible. Like Terry said, it's not even close. A season with Brad Johnson would be a nightmare. Sure he won like 6 games last year as a starter, but I just don't see him as a good fit in our style offense. And it's not just the fact that going with Johnson would be the nightmare. With Romo behind center, we have the ability to be a very special offense IMO.

For me, as big as the gap is between Romo and everyone else, the gap is just as big between Newman and the #3 most indispensible. Losing Ware would suck horribly, but we have players to step in and contribute there. Sure it would be a major dropoff, but we are VERY deep in linebackers.

Losing Newman would be a disaster. I just don't see any offenses being afraid of a secondary of Glenn, Henry, Williams, and Hamlin. Sure Hamlin fills a big need at FS. And sure, I still believe that Henry is a very good DB when he's healthy. But I don't think he could consistantly cover the other team's #1 guy, which is what he would have to do if Newman went down. Newman just flat out makes the rest of them that much better.

Let's just pray that we never have to worry about either of these situations.

Most indispensible

I would agree TNew could not be replaced. Period. Which is why it would be wonderful not to have him returning punts this season.

I'm going away from conventional wisdom and putting Gurode as the 2nd most indispensable simply because we need to be strong up the middle, and I don't know who we could bring in to replace him. Certainly no one on the roster can fill his shoes for any great length of time.  It would be awful to lose Ware or Fergie, but I feel better about their backups ability to step up and at least hold down the fort.

Nothing wrong

with either of your arguments. But... a strong pass rush can overcome a lot of weakness in the secondary, witness the Eagles last season, or even Seattle at times. On the other hand, a poor pass rush can expose even a pretty good secondary, witness the Cowboys in 05 and 06.

If I leaned in either direction between Ware and T-New, I'd say Ware because pressure can make even Biscuit and Bullet look Pro-Bowl in coverage.

I agree with you

The pass rush is more important.

But, I think with the Phillips 34 and our wealth of quality LB's, it would be easier to lose Ware and trust Wade puts in a viable replacement(s)than to lose our top CB.

We really don't have anyone even close to TNew's ability as a backup. That's why I thought we'd draft a top CB this past April.

Newman Improving

Newman absolutely needs to improve from his late '06 performance.  His play dropped off just like everyone else's in those last 5 games.  Sure you can blame it on the others around him, but he played subpar for his own standards.

As far as pass coverage goes, it wasn't necessarily just our secondary that needed significant improvement in pass coverage -- rather it was our linebackers that needed to improve.  Since they've all lost a good deal of weight that should help.

No Love For TO?

I agree that Romo is without a doubt the player that Dallas cannot afford to lose under any circumstances.  Without Romo, our only chance would be for our defense to turn into the 2000 Ravens.  But beyond Romo, I'm torn between Flo and TO.  We already saw what happened without Flo in 2005.  It wasn't pretty.  But, TO really does make the offense dynamic.  He single handed changes the way defenses play the Cowboys.  The double and triple teams open up the field for Glenn, Witten and the running game.  Plus, 13 receiving TDs would be impossible to replace.

Can't argue with Romo and T-new

I think some position loses could be covered up.  I shutter to think what would happen if teams could run on us - that would make things much, much worse.  So losing Ferguson would be bad but going to 4 man line is an option.  Losing one offensive tackle is not good but some allowances can be made - unless Pettiti is the other starter.  I am not sure how much covering up of a loss of T-new can be done and its hard to cover-up for a bad QB besides run 60% of the time like we did with Quincy - especially if QB is not mobile.
