Anonymous scout takes a shot at Tony Romo
ESPN is running a series on each NFL team. Over at the Cowboys review, Matt Mosley gives some love to Jay Ratliff as the best-kept secret on the team and to Terence Newman as the worst-kept secret on the team. But when they turn things over to an anonymous NFL scout for the cloak-and-dagger section, things get interesting.
The scout’s anonymous assessment of Tony Romo:
Tony Romo is the weakness. I’m not sure he’s the answer. He played well when he replaced Drew Bledsoe because teams didn’t know how to defend against him and because he was making simple throws. But during the last four to five weeks of the season, he couldn’t make the plays his team needed him to make. He looked like Rex Grossman, throwing off his back foot. They do have some weapons for him, and they’ve got a good defense, so his mistakes won’t be magnified until the playoffs.
Ouch! Rex Grossman? OK, I got mixed reviews for this assessment. I think he has a basic point right, when teams started game-planning for Romo his play came down to good from superior. But this assessment also makes it sound like Romo was the Keystone Kops out there. Yes, that’s a shot at Rex. Tony Romo might have been inconsistent down the stretch, but he wasn’t the weakness on the team and he won't be this year, either. The offensive line and the defense were fighting for that crown last year.
The floor is now open for Terry - or anyone else for that matter - to call the scout an idiot or moron.

this guy is actually a scout??
you gotta be kidding me?? There is no way he's a scout and actually watched Romo play last season, just no way.
This guy is beyond being a moron or idiot, good thing he remained anonymous.

I like to see him say that to Romo's face

Why...
Romo's maybe 6'2" and 200lbs soaking wet!!!
But I HOPE this scout's sentiments echo other scouts' views...LET THEM think we got a Grossman back there and not take him seriously. LET THEM crowd the line of scrimmage...PLEASE!!! I BEG THEM!!!!

Actually Romo's weight is listed at 230 I believe
by Burt D on Aug 31, 2007 11:34 AM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
it is, although
he's probably the thinnest looking 6-2, 230 lbs dude I ever saw. Then again, Joe Montana was a skinny runt, so size at the position really means nothing.

I have a theory on Newman's injury
I bet he really doesn't have an injury at all. I am thinking thats exactly what they want people to believe so they start throwing Newman's way so he'll get more ints. Its a conspiracy!

Carpenter and Spears
I only listened to the game on radio last night so didn't "see" anything.
I had hoped that Carpenter would really produce last night. Did he? I can't remember the announcer hardly even mentioning his name?
It appeared that Spears didn't have a very good game either. Did he?
These were two players I had hoped would really come into their own with the time they have been playing now. If these two high draft choices don't contribute to the level of the draft choice price we paid for them, it will hurt.

Carp looked gassed
he played almost every down including special teams.
Spears sucks we need to trade him and let Ratliff take over the starting role.

I
agree Burt, Trade him or move him to another position. I only listened to the game, but it seemed Hatcher had another solid performance. Don't be surprised it Hatcher gets the nod over Spears very quickly.

So what exactly
Do you think a team would give us for an underperforming former first round pick?
Not enough to justify trading him. Come on guys, this isn't Madden.

How about...
...trade Marcus for Britney.

Carpenter
I expected to get more out of Carpenter last year and thought he would be able to displace a starter. Even now, it doesn't appear as if he is anywhere near that.
Even though they moved him around a lot, I think if he was really good, he would have made a position his own by now. I would rather have Shandle or Fowler back and have taken a corner instead of Carpenter.
But as my uncle used to say...you can tell a lot using "behind" sight.

I am just plain tired
Of all the speculating, guessing, and dumb predictions that are flowing from every mouth that has a microphone shoved in front of it.
I just want the season to start. Until then, I will visit only select websites: BTB, DMN, and those websites with webcam girls.

Scout???????
Another one of those so called "experts", they just make me laugh with their assesments of players. There's a reason he remained anonymous.
by kermit on Aug 31, 2007 11:14 AM CDT reply actions 0 recs
to be fair
the scouts almost always remain anon. let's say a dallas scout think a cb always bites on a double move, if a dallas scout is quoted as saying that the org would go nuts.
this doesnt make it right, but its not like the go on the record regulary and this is a rarity.

I agree with the scout
Remember when Tony needed to hit Witten perfectly in stride while rolling to his left to get the win over the Giants late last year?
Oh wait, he DID make that GORGEOUS throw that had a HUGE impact on us getting into the playoffs.
He must be a Texans' scout...

Last Season
Tony Romo was the second coming for ESPN. They had this great PR story for mid season and picked it up and ran with it. They had a Sportscenter special on this guy and how he was the Cowboys' savior of a season that was imploding with Drew Bledsoe.
This year, the guy is unproven and a commodity. And I think they do things like this with calculated precision, knowing it will rile the masses of Cowboys nation. I mean, although we all hated what was said, we still went and looked at the website, right? Mission accomplished.
On a different note though, after last night is there absolutely any question on whether Romo is our guy for the season? He is so much more poised and polished than any other. How long has it been since we have said that?

and he'll just keep getting better
which is the beauty of it all.

ESPN just prints this stuff because they want
people to read their garbage.

It's easier to make up controversial stories
than to do actual, decent analysis. Thank goodness there are ESPN alternatives like this site.

Sounds like one of our old scouts
You know, the guys that said Shante carver would be an all pro. The ones that rated Larimore and Goodrich so high. In other words, totally incompetent.

I'm thinking
the "secret source" isn't an NFL scout. He's a freaking 12-year-old Boy Scout, a budding mouth-breather from Philly, with McNabb jersies and posters adorning the room he shares with three sister. He spends his game days throwing foam beer bottles to practice for the proud day when gets to attend a game in person and assault referees and other teams' players, as well as the not-too-occasional booing of his own team.
by dunkman on Aug 31, 2007 12:03 PM CDT reply actions 0 recs
wait, I know
he's the same scout who had Ryan Leaf, Rick Mirer, Todd Marinovich, Akiki Smith, Andre Ware and Tim Couch rated as future all-pros. Gotta be the same guy.

This anonymous expert
must've Googled "Romo cliche" and read from the printout.
Started great ... teams figured him out ... bombed at the end of the season ... blahblahblah. I'm surprised he didn't throw in the muffed hold.
I don't see greatness in Romo yet, but he looks to be good enough to get us where we want to go.

look harder Oskie
you'll see it.

When's Your Birthday, Terry?
I'm going to get you one of those Fathead wall stickers of Romo.
Just promise you wont tell me what you did with it.

It's safe to say
that he has shown flashes of greatness. What Romo needs to do is be able to put that together with mor consistency. I think he can, especially if the line is truly improved and the defense is even marginally better.

Doesn't matter to me
what anyone says about Romo. In the next 16 games (or 19) we will find out a good deal more. Until the end of the season there is not much available to replace him so words won't have any effect.

Rose Colored Glasses
What is not to like about Tony Romo? The kid has charisma!
Unfortunately, the flash of greatness we saw, was just that...a flash.
His mechanics are all wrong and he makes poor decisions. He is good at improvising when things break down, but staying in the pocket and passing is not his strength. In fact..teams game plan to keep him in the pocket.
For some reason..I have taken the rose colored glasses I used to wear when watching Romo and realized that we passed on Brady Quinn. I can't critize the move too much, because I jumped for joy when we made the trade during the draft. I like potentially having the #1 overall in the 2008 draft.
I truly hope I am wrong and Romo's outstanding leadership and quick release becomes tuned with experience to make better decisions and increase his accuracy from within the pocket. He could be the next Brett Favre...or he could be our Danny White...good enough to constantly break your heart.
One thing is for sure...the 2007-2008 Cowboys have more talent and promise than we've seen in a decade.
Thanks Bill.

you are wrong
you're either blind or know nothing about playing football when you say his mechanics and decision making are poor. Actually, his mechanics and decision making have improved tremendously.
Romo will take the step on becoming an elite qb this season and Quinn will turn out to be mediocre at best.
If teams game plan to keep him in the pocket this season, that will be awesome as 4000 yds and 30 TDs would definitely be within his reach if thats the case.
He'll simply slice opposing secondaries to shreads.

Mechanics and Decsion Making
Players with great decison making and mechanics do not fumble the ball as much as Romo.
I guess I am blind and wrong. I've never met the quarterback coach that teaches the side arm pass, but I am sure they are out there. I do not claim to be a mechanics guru..but are you trying to say Romo's side arm throw is good mechanics?
Again..I hope I am wrong..we'll see.
