Dallas Cowboys look impressive in win over Colts, 23-10

Well I was impressed. The Dallas Cowboys offense was dominating the field for most of the game, and the only thing that kept the score at 23-10 was a couple of missed opportunities for TD’s in the redzone by Dallas. Tony Romo was very sharp in his first preseason game of the season, and while the defense wasn’t great in the first quarter, they did hold the Colts to a FG. The Cowboys 2nd and 3rd teams looked superior to the Colts backups.

MB3 and TT both looked good. MB3 was dancing a little too much early but got his roll on later to dominate play. TT had a few good, tough runs and scored a TD. Matt Moore had a good drive where he hooked up with Tony Curtis on three good passes. I think he has something to work with for the next game, a little bit of confidence. The tight ends had a big night in this offense. Tony Curtis stats: 3/58, Anthony Fasano stats: 3/43. Wait until Jason Witten gets some real playing time

On defense, Keith Davis got the pick for a TD, compliments of a tipped pass by Alex Obomese, who continues to make plays. Joey Thomas also got an INT. Junior Glymph and Jay Ratliff combined for a sack.

On the downside, Brad Johnson wasn’t that sharp and Doug Free apparently suffered a sprained knee. I don’t know about any other injuries. Also, the kickoff coverage unit was poor.

Overall, a very good start for the Cowboys, the offense was able to sustain long, time-eating drives, although they need to cash them in for seven next time. The defense could use a little more pass rush, Manning had too much time to throw, but they did a good job of keeping the Colts to 10 points on the night, seven of them coming very late.

What are you guys thinking? What impressed you, or what didn’t impress you? And does anybody know for sure who put the roach on Romo?

Box score.

very nice overall

What I like best:

  • Offensive play calling, I sure liked it eating up the clock
  • Offensive line pass blocking, Romo had plenty of time
  • Kickers! (punter, too!)

Offensive play calling was amazing
Our vanilla preseason offense was better than anything I saw from all of last season.  Red zone struggles probably had a lot to do with the inability to run the ball which in turn probably had a lot to do with the fact that the opposing DL was at 110% health and strength.  Once they wear down, it should be easier to score.

Garrett really knows how to get the tight ends open and that helped Matt Moore a lot.  In fact, Moore looked like a product of the system out there and there's nothing that puts a bigger grin on my face than knowing the Cowboys now have offense where players are products of the system rather than the system being a product of the players.

by kk218 on Aug 9, 2007 10:06 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

Well...

You can't say they were at 110% health since McFarland just got put on IR.  They were starting a rookie at one of the DT spots, plus they are replacing 5 starters from last year's team on defense?  Still though, you can only beat what's in front of you and (must like last November's game), the Cowboys were usually able to run when they wanted to (excluding some trouble in the red zone).

I do agree with you that the idea of the Cowboys having an offense that produces players instead of relying on outside players/talent makes me smile.  I don't think we are quite there yet.  But I do think that a "system" is a factor of how good your QB is (improving) and how good your O-line is (also seem to be improving, but we'll see when Flo gets back out there).

The Cowboys are not an elite team yet, but they are on the precipice like the past year to two years, and they have the benefit of having young talent to grow with.  Here's hoping...

I wasn't really talking about the team

But rather the players themselves. They were at 110% strength and health.  The rookie they had starting was at 110% strength and health, etc.

my impressions

Cowboys defense is much faster than last season, that was something that really stood out. You could tell our pressure will be much better than last season.

the offense will be very similar to the '90's offense, take what the defense gives you and run the ball, while also taking your shots down field. Romo was outstanding as usual and will only get better.

Special teams sucked, except for our kickers and McBriar. Coverage units must get much better.

Overall, a very impressive opening preseason game.

yes

James and Ayodele and RW looked faster

very impressive for the first preseason game - only like 8 penalties

by Arkcowboys on Aug 9, 2007 11:20 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Disagree

I think our offense in the 90's was more of a consistent rushing attack which allowed us to exploit defenses with an aggressive vertical passing attack.

I think we're going to see a lot more strategy implemented.  Looks like Garrett is trying to install some zone blocking in the run game as well as an offense based primarily off the shortened passing attack.

by dallashartwell on Aug 10, 2007 6:04 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Don't Be Afraid to Be a Critic

We can list a lot of things that went well tonight, the timing in the passing game was terriffic.

I was more than happy to see Matt Moore, a guy Ron Jaworski said could've been a late first round draft pick if he played on a better Pac 10 school, play so well.  I agree, he could have a future.

I don't think the poor rushing was Barber's fault neccessarily.  It looks like Garrett is trying to install a little bit of a zone rushing attack.  Barber was breaking tackles in the backfield just to get back to the line of scrimmage.  With the size of our offensive line I really don't understand why we'd want to implement a zone style rushing attack.

Depth wise, I'm really impressed with this team.  There are going to be some great players cut from this team.

I was a little dissapointed with the pass coverage and seeing Jamel Richardson drop two very catchable passes by Moore.

by dallashartwell on Aug 9, 2007 10:37 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

what was Davis Doning

I say him numerous times - standing around looking at guys in the backfield - or trying to hit someone in the backfield - was he blocking that well ? I say the time he made it to the second level and planted that LB'er

by Arkcowboys on Aug 9, 2007 11:05 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

Didn't see the second half, but...

Marion Barber continues to impress.  I'm in the "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" camp, but I did like the point that Troy Aikman brought up about him having pretty good moves for someone who is supposed to specialize between the tackles.

I was against paying Leonard Davis (and said so rather loudly on here).  But I must say, I love the way he played tonight, especially on the first drive.  I was against the signing because, in the salary cap era, it does not seem wise to invest that much money into the guard position (Parcells thought it was the easiest position on the field to draft/plug-in for).  I'd heard he was big, but damn, he looked HUGE out there.  Plus, for someone who is supposed to have mobility problems, he seemed to gain the second level prety well (pancaking some poor Colts LB in the process).  We'll have to see how he does over the long run, of course, but I'm liking the immediate returns.

Roy Williams, similar to last year, seemed to be a step to slow in the secondary.  I'm not sure if this was just because I noticed it on certain plays (or if I'm predisposed), but he has not shown enough yet to soothe my fears about his coverage.

Finally, the person who's development our season (future) depends on:  I thought he was pretty good.  Obviously, his numbers were very good.  And while I'm not sure he was as good as his numbers tonight (plus the fact that the Colts probably didn't game plan-nor could they have with a new offensive system in place), he seems to have gotten better over the offseason.  A little bit more calm back there (I especially liked the play where everything was falling apart, he slipped and then just went down instead of trying to reverse-back-flip-between-the-legs or some such...ended up getting a deserved roughing the passer call, too).  I hope that the offense doesn't get too TO-centric (although, you could argue he was underused at times last year).  But still, he seemed to do a good job of hitting his 1st, 2nd and dump off receivers.

He's still improving and I wouldn't put him in the top tier of QB's quite yet, but he's showing the development we've all been hoping for that could get him there.  If he continues what we saw tonight, next season he could join the elite QB group.

by GhettoBear04 on Aug 9, 2007 11:10 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

Marion Barber wasn't really that impressive

Most of his yards came on like that 15 yard draw play on 3rd and 26; take that away and he's under three yards a carry for the game.

by kk218 on Aug 9, 2007 11:31 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

But then again on a lot of those runs I didn't

see a hole for him to run into and did a good job not losing yards.

It's harder...

to make sense of numbers in a preseason game.  I wasn't trying to say he proved he should be the number one back with last night's performance, just that I saw something from him that suprised me.  If they ever did switch, I'd feel a little more comfortable now.

Plus, his best run was taken away by a penalty (where he broke a Colts LB's ankles and skitted around him...freakin awesome)

by GhettoBear04 on Aug 10, 2007 7:51 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Dancing with MB3

When he came in to the league Parcells did not like the way he danced behind the line of scrimmage and tried to take the run outside. Parcells got on him until he stopped doing it. It looks like maybe some of that dancing is back? I'm not necessarily saying that's a bad thing (he didn't have much choice many times last night)but it is something to keep an eye on because it seems to be a bit of a departure from his running style under Parcells.

I missed the beginning of the game (having trouble with my local channels on DirecTv). Did Julius Jones play last night? If no, why not?

by boysandbosox on Aug 10, 2007 9:09 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

He played

but only the early series. I think he left when Tony did.

He played decently, about as well as MBIII. I think all of the RBs suffered from inconsistent run blocking. As I recall, the camp report on Free was solid pass blocking but needed improvement on run blocking. JJ's best play was a dump off pass where he gained some great yardage and made a nifty move at the end. More of Red Ball getting him into space.

by dunkman on Aug 10, 2007 9:23 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

I really like what I saw out of L. Davis

He reminds you of L. Allen with his sheer power.  And I'll tell ya, he looks to be in pretty good shape for 366lbs!  The man is a beheamoth!

MB3 impressed--again.  Dude is a playmaker at RB, plain and simple.  Why we'd wanna take that off the field 50% of the time is beyond me.

Fasano looks to be everything you want in a #2 TE.  Like that Curtis kid, too, looks like a heckuva athlete.

by Starred4Life on Aug 9, 2007 11:30 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

I agree Leonard was great as were

Doug Free and Pat McQuistan.  Free owned Freeney and didn't let him get near Romo on the first team drives.  McQ is ready to backup our tackle spots this year.

by kk218 on Aug 9, 2007 11:32 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Impressed by

Romo - looked sharp with his timing and accuracy.
Fasano - caught everything in sight for big plays
Curtis - I didn't think this guy had a prayer of making the team, but he looked 100% better than last year, 3rd TE as of now.
Backup OT's  - Free and McQ both played very well
TT - he stepped it up, he looks like a lock for 3rd RB
Joey Thomas - he's the 4th best CB on this team, although Ball did much better than I thought he would.
Matt Moore looked pretty decent.

Less than stellar

Kickoff coverage was BAD
Battle was really outplayed by TT in this game, I don't see him making the roster.
Backup center (Proctor?), not pretty.
All WR's lower than 4th on depth chart.

All in all, a very encouraging performance.

Would have liked to see JJ a bit more

I wish Julius Jones would have gotten a few more carries.  I didn't think that Barber was that impressive, personally.  I know they don't want to give too much away, but I would have liked to have seen a little more of our pass rush and red zone packages.

by Baked Potato Soup on Aug 9, 2007 11:54 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

Lots of good things but ...

zero pass rush from the front three.  I have no idea where we would be without Ware.

I have always liked Spears & Canty but they have to step it up.  Our defense would improve dramatically if we could get pressure from any of our down lineman.

I guess this is nothing new ... but thats what makes it so frustrating.

...when Romo and Carpenter were yucking it up on the sideline and all of a sudden Carpenter looks panicked realizing he is supposed to be on the field and takes off. Romo tried not to laugh but couldn't help himself.

When are we gonna see Phillips eating a hot dog on the sideline, a la Barry Switzer?

The Parcells Cowboys they ain't. There is nothing more fun to watch than a loose team having fun and winning at the same time (2004 Boston Red Sox--"The Idiots") but when you don't win...

Great way to start the year.

Well, I think we can all agree that it was great to get back to the Cowboy world and finally put Romo's bobble in the past.

I was impressed by the offensive play calling. I also did like the time consumption by them.

Although it was merely a preseason game, it looked like everyone was pumped to be out and hitting people with different jerseys on other than their own.

The defense did struggle, but we did hold the World Champions to a field goal. I'll take that any day of the week and twice on Sunday.

Field goal kicking was impressive, I did like Folk's kickoffs, but I'd hate to burn a roster spot on him, but we'll see.

Fasano did have a good series, I think it was in the first half, and it impressed the hell out of me.

All in all, it was indeed a phenomenal way to start off the year. We've got a lot to talk about until the Bronco game.

And I think T.O. put the bug on Romo, at least that's what my dad says.

also the defense looked vanilla which is good dont show to much in preseason play them straight up not worried about the pass rush i have faith in wade defense

by jvw on Aug 10, 2007 2:12 AM CDT reply actions   0 recs

There are a few clues

in the NFL Gamebook. First Julius Jones ran entirely against the Colts' first defense. MB3 ran entirely against the Colts 2nd defense. Big difference. Also Julius was stuffed on two plays - both around Rt end where Martin was probably way over matched and still averaged 3.7. MB3 averaged 4.0 and TT averaged 3.1 and battle 2.8. Julius had only 1 pass thrown to him across the middle for 13 yard gain. I suspect that the staff does not want to expose much of that in preseason but it sure looked good. MB3 caught 3 passes for about the same yardage.

Ken Hamlin concerns me. There feels like more than they are telling us.

NFLN said after the game that the 1st O-line run blocking was really outstanding. Considering McQ and Martin are subs that bodes well for this year. I am concerned that Free's sprained knee gets well. It seems as though he is only backing up at LT - is that accurate?

Third down % for the Colts was 36% and 50% for Cowboys. Fourth down was 67% for Colts and 100% for Cowboys.

When the leading rusher for the Colts is their 3rd string QB it says the Phillips 34 is stopping the run.

Joey Thomas was credited with 5 unassisted tackles to lead the team along with 1 INT and 1 PD. Obomese had 2 tackles, an assist, a forced fumble, a sack and 1 pass defensed. Two young bucks making their opportunity.

Bradie James was credited with only 2 assists and no tackles. Ayodele had 2 tackles and no assists. Neither had a pass defensed. Anthony Spencer had nothing. Ware had 2 tackles and 1 assist. They do not show a hurry for Ware but I saw one in the highlights.

Special Teams coach is a rookie and it showed. No way that is all trying new guys. Maybe showing up late for special teams practice needs some more yelling. In any case a repeat is going to bump some guys maybe we don't expect right off the team.

We played a tackle on offense (#62) I did not even know we had - Pete Lougheed.

Time of possesion was 37 minutes. Outstanding. I like Matt Moore and think he showed some things tonight. Nice first step.

It was Newman with the roach according to DC.com.

lee3022

It was Doug Free who started at LT and left the game in the 3rd period with a sprained knee. Pat McQuistan was the starter at RT. And I think Pete Lougheed is an offensive linemen, the box score must have messed up his number with another players.

Otherwise, thanks for the numbers.

I agree with most of the posts

First time for me watching football in HD. Nice.

I found it interesting that the offense was a little overmatched in practice but out-performed the defense in the game. That supports the theory that the defense held back some of their stunts and blitz packages (in addition to not seeing much more than a plain vanilla pass rush with my own eyes).

Offense was very sharp.

  • Romo. What can you say? 10/11 is amazing, and these weren't all dinks and dunks. He did miss a wide-open Witten in the red zone, but there was a bit of pocket collapse going on.
  • JJ ran well considering the line was only 60% populated with starters.
  • Line did OK, all things considered. Pass protection was good, run blocking spotty.
  • MBIII. I agree with the comment that he was trying to shake and bake too much in the beginning and settled down. His early runs were not good. Kept thinking "somewhere out there Burt D is choking on his beer"...
  • Urban is one tough guy. Too bad he probably won't make the team.
  • Fasano is miles ahead of where he was last year.

Defense

  • Looked like they pulled last year's pass rush out of the mothballs. I'm hanging on to the theory that it was intentionally vanilla, which it probably was.
  • The secondary and LBs looked faster and more active. Some missed tackles, especially later in the game, but a really good effort. Better pass coverage as well.
  • Thomas lived up to Grizz's charaterization of being around the ball.
  • Moore did OK considering my low expectations for him.

ST.

  • Folk and Gramatica kicked like twins. This'll be a hard choice down the line.
  • Kick coverage was awful. Bruce Read will definitely have his hands full. Poor tackling, poor angles, poor lane discipline. You name it, they did it.

Coaching.

  • Red Ball's maiden voyage looked solid. One delay of game problem, but the play calling looked smart and cohesive, like he knew what he wanted to do and got it done.
  • Defense. Not much going on in terms of play calling, so we won't know anything yet.
  • ST. Shoot them all and start over again.

by dunkman on Aug 10, 2007 7:06 AM CDT reply actions   0 recs

Agreed on most of this

I agree with what you're saying Dunkman.  A few responses and random thoughts:

Romo did a nice job.  He did miss Witten on that one hurried throw, but it's worth pointing out that Witten was only wide open because the safety (who was in a position to cover both Witten and TO) broke to TO once the pass was released.  But that's splitting hairs; Witten would have caught it.

JJ ran well.  It wasn't great, but I didn't see him run into the line and fall down.  MBIII was scattin' and scootin' a little too much, but there were a few plays where he broke a tackle to get free but just couldn't stay on his feet.  He's not running like a robot, that's for sure.  Thompson and Moore both looked great, but that may have something to do with facing a 3rd string defense on a team that has gone through some salary cap roster attrition.

Fasano was great, he could turn into a real asset.  I was pretty impressed that he was able to make the catch and hang on when he took a strong lick.

Henry and Thomas both made some plays in the secondary.  Thomas should be our 4th CB.

I agree that we may be holding back the blitzes, and I'd like to see more pressure.  All things considered, the 1st quarter reminded me of the Colts game last season.  Romo making all of his throws and good bend-but-don't-break defense.

Re: Hamlin, I don't think there's much reason to panic yet.  I think given his history of head injuries, they're just being cautious.

by grapejoos on Aug 10, 2007 9:40 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Right

I'll go back over my DVR this weekend, but it seemed to me that they basically rushed four guys and stayed in their lanes.

I liked secondary play without Hamlin, so it should really pick up again once he can spell cat and count fingers again.

Fasono's hands were excellent and Garrett was really taking advantage of what the cover 2 gave them. I like that in a coordinator, but of course it'll get harder when the other team is scheming to win instead of evaluating its own talent.

by dunkman on Aug 10, 2007 10:14 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Remember it's the Colts D...

Before we start mixing up the Super Bowl koolaid ...let's remember that this was the Colts D which didn't even show up last year until the playoffs and have already had some key losses. Remember Grizz's camp reports on how the D seemed to be getting the best of our O most of the time? I think our O benefited last night from practicing against a D that was much better than the Colts D. If Red Ball does well against the Broncos, I'll feel much better.

Don't call me a hater...just cautiously optimistic.

Wade era begins

For preseason, this looked mighty good to me. Garrett looked like he was having fun and his stuff was clicking. Romo was sharp. (Wish he had seen wide-open Witten when he went to a covered TO in the end zone that time.) JJ looked good with the pass over the middle for a first down. Barber was impressive after he found his groove. Tyson has improved a lot and looks solid. Fasano and Curtis both looked good. Davis looked fine and the backup tackles got it done; that's a relief. Moore looked sharp, but Johnson was kinda sad with the fumble-bumble-stumble.

Defensively, not too shabby but I am still waiting to see the monster pass rush. I know it's coming. Couple of pressures that resulted in incompletions. Henry made a good save at the goal line. Loved Killa's pick for six. D kinda fizzled when the scrubs came in.

Kickers all looked good, but, man, the coverage teams sucked. Good to see us pounce on the on-side attempt though.

Wade and company should be pleased. Good start.

Keep doing what you been doing, keep getting what you been getting.

Nothing New here

Caveat- Indy doesn't prepare for the first preseason game at all.

Positive:

I was impressed with Romo's accuracy and pocket presence.  There were 5 plays that would have been a sack with Bledsoe/Johnson et al.  I'm not too interested in yards or td's or what not in the first preseason game with all the vanilla stuff.

JJ impressed me with his attitude.  He was looking to "bring it" and it showed.  He's no Barber in the "bringing it" category, but I expect a big year from JJ.

Fasano has improved by leaps and bounds.  Perhaps "mini witten" would be a descriptive nickname.  Good hands and a knack for finding the soft spots in the zone.

Gramatica is a keeper.

Negative:

The defense didn't look sure of themselves.  Several busted assignments.  Hope that gets cleared up in the next 3 weeks.

Coverage unit got gashed on the first kick.  We must do better there.

Brad Johnson was shaky.  Plus I don't like him holding on FG/PAT's.  We saw in the playoffs that you sometimes need someone to run from that spot on occasion and I can moon-walk faster in golf spikes on shag carpet than BJ can run on turf.  Stanback or Crayton should handle this duty.

Overall:

Solid outing.  Looking forward to the development.  Romo is the man.

Moon walk in spikes

Nice.

Johnson needs a little more time and space to throw and the line wasn't up to it. He'll probably be better with the complete starting unit.

I agree on Romo. His poise is pretty amazing. I'm pretty sure I'd have pterodactyl sized butterflies going on...
