League source: Dolphins will hire Sparano as head coach
Reports are coming in that Tony Sparano is expected to be named the Dolphins coach as early as next week.
According to a league source, the Miami Dolphins are expected to name Cowboys offensive line/assistant head coach Tony Sparano to be their next head coach.
The Dolphins could officially announce Sparano's hiring early next week, the source said, but Sparano will not leave the Cowboys until their season is over.
No surprise if and when it happens. Everything else seemed like a formality anyway.
The Tuna also picked off one of our scouts.
Assistant director of pro scouting Brian Gaine, in his third season with the Cowboys, left the team to join the Miami Dolphins’ scouting department.
The blurb also mentions that Jerry was a little frustrated about this one. I wouldn’t be surprised if he starts blocking some of the Dolphins’ overtures in the future.
Update [2008-1-6 12:41:25 by Dave Halprin (Grizz)]: From the DMN blog:
Brian Gaine, the Cowboys assistant director of pro scouting, has not joined Jeff Ireland and Bill Parcells in Miami.
I'm told the NFL has blocked a possible move to the Dolphins even though the Cowboys are willing to let Gaine leave now. Under league rules, Gaine would not be eligible to leave for the Dolphins until his contract expires unless he takes a job with "final say authority." His contract ends in the spring.
Since Ireland has that job in Miami, Gaine remains with the Cowboys - for now - unless the league decides to change its decision.
Hat tip to Philosopher for posting the news in the comments.

Tim Cowlishaw tries to put this year’s defense into a historical perspective with Cowboys defenses of the past, especially the Super Bowl teams.
The Breerman takes a look at the Cowboys secondary and discovers, contrary to popular opinion, that they’ve been getting better as the year has progressed and have put up some respectable numbers.
They've allowed just one opponent to throw for more than 250 yards over their last 10 games after yielding 250-plus three times in their first six.
[snip]
On top of that, when the Cowboys haven't been making big plays, they've been preventing them. In three of the team's first six games, the Cowboys yielded four pass plays of 20-plus yards. They haven't allowed that many in a game since.
Not too bad. It seems like the thing that has hurt us most in the recent games is the inability to stuff the run like we were for most of the season. Once a team can run the ball on you, everything else becomes much easier.

Jerry Jones offers this quote on the health of T.O.
"I like where he is," Jerry Jones said on his Friday radio show. "Our trainers are really satisfied with the progress that he's making. He's got his boot off. The swelling, [there is] none detectable or relatively little. And when you compare that and the nature of his injury with the rehab of other players in similar situations, then we [should] be optimistic."

Thanks for the updates
It's obvious that TO is key to the Cowboys' post season success, but having Terry Glenn back has been almost completely overlooked by everyone outside the fan base. He has an ability to draw double teams and get behind defenses that no one else on the team brings.
And yeah, Jerry needs to stop donating scouts to the Tuna or the team will be back where it was five years ago...

Our scouted department is getting ravaged
I am not liking this. That is 2 scouts and a coach he has taken.
Now, which free agents will Parcells be going after from our team? Barber for one.....

MB3 is Restricted
MB3 is a Restricted Free Agent. I'm confident the Cowboys will place the highest tender on MB3. That means anyone who signs him will owe the Cowboys their first and third round picks in this years draft (if the Cowboys decide not to match their offer).
For the first overall pick in the draft and the first pick of the second day, I think I'd have to let MB3 go (even though I'm a big MB3 fan).
If the Cowboys don't get MB3 extended before the end of next season, then teams will be lined up to sign him as an Unrestricted Free Agent.

that also
means it will cost us upwards of 4 mil to keep him when we place that tag on him if I'm correct.

2.562 Mil
From:
http://profootballexperts.scout.com/...
(a)$2,562,000 for the 2008 League Year, or (b) 110% of the player’s prior year’s Paragraph 5 Salary, whichever is greater, in addition, if option (b) applies, all other terms of the player’s prior year contract are carried forward unchanged.

Ireland GM
Does anyone believe that Jeff Ireland is Miami's GM? I Don't! Bill Parcells is the GM (at least for the next few years). Did anyone see the Ireland press conference on BSPN? After Irelands hire, BP fired Cam Cameron before Ireland even had a chance to talk to him. Doesn't sound like Ireland has GM authority to me (only the title).
JJ could do the same thing. When you recognize an outstanding talent evaluator, "promote" him from scouting director to "GM". But that would require JJ to relinquish his title of Owner/GM (why isn't Owner enough of a title?).
The loss of 2 scouts concerns me (Long Term) far more than the loss of a coach. By all accounts, Sparano is an excellent coach. But the draft is critical to long term success. Talent acquisition through the draft, limits your need for free agents (read that as $$$). And this year with two 1st round picks, its critical to get it right (end up with two contributers, not two high priced bench warmers).

I think anymore
actions they take to get some of our people, there had better be some compensation coming our way.
I can't believe Jerry will sit still any longer and let anymore go without a fight.

King William Loves to Embarrass Owners
And I don't doubt he's more than a little jealous of this team's success, and upset that players and even indirectly the owner have dared to question his decisions while he was at Dallas. You dare question the King?
So now he's going after one of our best coaches (understandable), Ireland (not a big loss in the scheme of things) and now Gaine. It's obvious he wants to try and knock us down a few notches, because he hasn't been around a 13-3 team in almost two decades. The success of this team makes him look inferior in comparison, so he's doing the managerial equivalent of a child who realizes he's been beaten at a game of chess, and angrily sweeps the pieces off the board.
The guiding principle for Parcells is his ego must stroked and fed above all else. Why else would he treat a great owner like Robert Kraft with contempt; why else would he keep Jones waiting for weeks after we lost to Seattle; why else would he walk away from Tampa Bay after reaching a verbal agreement after a year negotiation with Malcolm Glazer?
One could look at this another way, and just claim Parcells is going back to hire those people he knows best. But given his career-long animosity towards owners, or anyone who presumes to question his decisions, it's pretty clear to me he's the dog lifting his leg on Jerry Jones' tree.

BP
a coward and a pathetic liar who has no loyalty to anyone. He quit on us and yet the people he quit on are following him. JJ needs to grow a backbone and say hell no...

The NFL should block this
The draft and free agency is coming up, the Tuna can't just take our scouts without a fight. I understand that Ireland was in return for Garrett, but when they start taking lower level scouts, I say BS.
