Cowboys vs. Giants: Know thy enemy
Over at Big Blue View, ETVal is holding down the fort for the Giants faithful and doing every heterosexual male a favor by posting daily pics of Jessica Simpson. He also asked to exchange team scouting reports for the game. These are just some surface looks at the teams. Here's his report on the Giants.

The Dallas Cowboys have defeated the New York Giants twice -- scoring a healthy 76 points in the process.
Cowboys fans had to figure they were done with the Giants. So, how is it that the New York Giants are still standing? How did they get here to what is -- stunningly -- the first playoff meeting between these two long-time rivals?
There are few, if any, secrets between these two teams. Let me break down the Giants for you from a New York fan's perspective and see if I can help you understand why Giants' boosters are as optimistic right now as they have been at any time during the Tom Coughlin/Eli Manning Era.
Offense
When you talk about the Giants' offense, that conversation has to begin and end with Eli Manning. As a Giants' fan, Eli has always been a source of frustration. Right now, however, he is coming off a brilliant 20-of-27 no-turnover game against Tampa Bay and a very good game against New England. Those may be the best back-to-back performances of his career. If that trend continues, the Giants will have a shot at an upset.
Other factors for the Giants are the improving health of Plaxico Burress, whose chronically bad ankle slowed him much of the year. He has been able to practice recently, though. In the running game, Dallas fans know about the power of Brandon Jacobs, but may not know much about the speed and big-play ability of Ahmad Bradshaw. The rookie 7th-round pick announced himself to the NFL with a 17-carry, 151-yard game against Buffalo a month ago. Sunday against Tampa Bay he provided 66 yards on 17 carries and was the guy the Giants turned to down the stretch to run out the clock. He provides a big play dimension from the backfield the Giants didn't have in their previous meetings with the Cowboys.
Defense
We all know Dallas has, for the most part, had its way with the Giants defense in two meetings. The first game was especially bad, as your Cowboys scored 45 points.
Am I foolish enough to think New York can completely shut the Cowboys down? No. I do, believe, though, that this defense has continued to improve throughout the season. You know about the league's best pass rush, but you may not know that as the season has progressed Michael Strahan has gotten better and better. Against Tampa Bay he was vintage old-time Strahan with 9 tackles, a sack and a slew of pressures.
The Giants' secondary is still vulnerable, but defensive end turned linebacker Mathias Kiwanuka isn't in the lineup any longer. That might make the middle of the field harder for Dallas to exploit in the passing game.
Special Teams
Domenic Hixon and Bradshaw have emerged as good returners, giving the Giants another threat they did not previously have.
Coaching
Tom Coughlin has resurrected his career this season. The Giants were a fractured team a year ago, but the team believes in Coughlin now and plays very hard. It's an amazing transformation.
Overview
The Cowboys will -- and should -- be the heavy favorites here. The Giants, though, are playing better football than they have at any time in the Coughlin/Manning Era so Giants' fans feel like our team has a chance. We will find out on Sunday.

Nice spin Dr.
The Bucs o-line is a big weakness. I beleive I heard they were down to 3rd string OT's. Of course, the Gints are going to pressure when they face players like that. It means nothing.
I love the description of lil Eli's performance as "brilliant", more like "he didn't screw up the game by choking. C'mon Gints fans.
I do think they have a good defense and can run the ball, the Bradshaw kid is fast and Hixon was a good find. But, if its a close game, I'd take Folk over Lawrence Tynes 100 times out of 100 chances.
I personally think the Cowboys steamroll the Gints. Next week things could get interesting.

Uhhh...
This was what I said about Eli a day ago.
Eli Manning played a brilliant game against the Bucs.
I'm a Giants fan! I must kill myself now.

I forgive you Grizz, LOL
But brilliant is a bit strong to describe Eli's performance. More like good enough to get the job done.

I would take that stat line on the road
in the playoffs any day. I don't need a ton of yards, I need accuracy, scores and no turnovers. Brilliant!

How about a Dilferesque performance?
The year the Ravens won it all.
by APerfectStar on Jan 9, 2008 7:50 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
I disagree
The Giants wouldn't have won that game without the three turnovers by the Buccaneers. Eli did play well but not brilliant
by coolaid on Jan 9, 2008 7:53 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
Right on
A brilliant performance would be 3 or 4 TD passes, no INT's, 250 to 350 yds. I wouldn't throw the word brilliant around to describe a guy that didn't make the critical mistake. Just my opinion.

Right on about the O-line
The two tackles are not 3rd string but together have played in 41 games in their careers and 0 playoff games. Strahan is hard for a seasoned tackle and a beast for inexperienced guys. With Gurode back the Cowboy O-line did well the first two games against these guys and it seems reasonable that they will again largely prevail.
I am not convinced that they can cover both Witten and Owens and now add Glenn to the team and no matter who is playing linebacker they have problems.
Even so this game is a playoff game against division rivals and just about anything can happen.

actually
We're not favored to win this game. Everywhere I've gone, people are saying that the Giants will beat us.

Cowboys
are a 7.5 point favorite. I think the significance of Dallas' late-season 'slump' is overrated, and they will play well Sunday. Should be fun.

the media vs. the betters
the media is liking to look at only the latest trends and play up the upset story to the point where it almost feels like the Cowboys winning would be the upset. But those putting money on the line are looking at more than just the last few games. The Giants are playing well, though, and it has the makings of a great game.

Wasn't Obama
Expected to win New Hampshire by double digits the night before the election even though Hillary was expected to win by double digits a week earlier?
What does this have to do with football?
Simple. The talking heads have NO FREAKIN' CLUE no matter the venue. (and I promise the politicos put more effort into their predictions) Quit listening to them.

ETVal was being modest, a trait I
resepct. This should be a great game. The Giants have a great shot at winning and so do the Cowboys.

I still say T.O. is the key
with him I really think we'll win.
by Terry on Jan 9, 2008 8:40 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
Does that mean without him
you really think we'll lose?
There are 54 active players on game day.
Just a reminder.
by FunCowboysFan on Jan 10, 2008 6:59 AM CST up reply actions 0 recs
I think its more probable
If you don't think T.O. makes an absolutely huge difference in the Cowboys offense, you really haven't been paying attention to the team this season. Anytime we handled opponents really well, T.O. has had monster games. When we have trouble getting T.O. the ball, our offense struggles big time.
We win with our offense, not our defense. Just saying.

Yes, it should
I believe the Giants are a better, more confident team. The way they challenged New England did wonders for this team's belief in how good it can be. That said, there is always the potential for implosion. Still, I think this should be the best of the three games between the teams this season. Who wins? I don't know. That's why we watch the game.

Gints are not a better team, not by a longshot
The ebb and flow of a season doesn't mean they are more confident. The dumb move was to go all out to challenge the Pats. Notice Manning played well with no pressure. But the moment he realized they had a chance to win, boom, INT.
by APerfectStar on Jan 10, 2008 1:13 AM CST up reply actions 0 recs
The Giants are certainly NOT
the "better" team, 12..that's TWELVE pro-bowlers kinda speaks for itself.
What makes you believe they are "more confident"? Because they beat a weak Bucs team? I actually expected the Giants to dominate that game. Because of Jessica Simpson? Please.

Ah shucks
you done spoiled our secret weapon - Spears is coming Eli....coming again and oh yes - you remember Ware and Ellis I am sure. Might even get reacquainted with Brady James.
I had forgotten that play (and I saw it live). Falling down was easily the best of many bad options. Thanks.

There emerges in me my darker side
secretly glad the gnats fans are so sure Eli will lead them to the promised land. All the better to see how hard they fall when Bad Eli comes to town. No Shockey - big problem as he alone has been the weapon for the passing game against the Cowboys. But Eli at his best does little to stop the Cowboys offense.
Oh and Burress getting better? Sorry about this but Burress has revealed this week that he has torn a tendon off the bone in his ankle and won't start to get better until after the season if over (Sunday).
