Marion Barber rumored first round tender only; Dallas Cowboys countdown to free agency

The Cowboys were expected to give Marion Barber the highest tender $2.56 million, which would merit compensation of first and third round draft picks. It seems that Jerry has gone the unexpected route, according the Star-Telegram:

Contrary to earlier reports, the Cowboys will give Barber a first-round tender at $2.017 million, which would net them a first-round pick if he goes to another team, rather than the high tender of $2.56 million, which would have returned a first- and third-round pick.

There are many possible reasons for this move and the best one can do is speculate. It could be a salary cap issue or Jerry might be setting himself up to make a play at a top draft pick. We won't know right away though and it will be interesting to read what the media makes of it. If nothing else it just adds fuel to the rumor fires already burning.

Hat tip to deke for posting the story in his diary.

The Cowboys will also be looking for another running back to work with Marion Barber and Michael Turner could be the someone the Cowboys target:

Dallas Cowboys head coach Wade Phillips is well-versed with what Turner can do, having spent three years in San Diego as defensive coordinator and going against him in practice.

With Dallas running back Julius Jones expected to hit the open market after he was replaced by Marion Barber as the starter in the playoffs, the Cowboys could have interest in Turner if they hope to reprise their largely successful two-back system.

 title=

Free agency starts tomorrow night and the Cowboys top priority remains re-signing Flozell Adams. Dallas had the choice of franchising Adams but opted instead to give that honor to Ken Hamlin. If the Cowboys fail to reach an agreement with Adams he will hit the market and will garner plenty of interest from around the league. Rob Phillips over at dc.com makes an interesting observation about the last time Adams faced free agency:

The Cowboys and Adams actually didn't complete his previous five-year, $25 million deal until after the free-agent signing period began back in 2003. Both sides worked feverishly to hammer out a deal by that Friday, some 15 hours after the Cowboys technically lost their exclusive negotiating rights.

I think the Cowboys are interested to find out what his market value will be in free agency and will make their offer based on that. Adams' signing will affect how the Cowboys approach the rest of free agency and it will be intriguing to see what happens.
Todd Archer at the Dallas Morning News once again emphasizes what might happen if Adams leaves:

And the Cowboys would be left with a hole at left tackle, although owner and general manager Jerry Jones has said Leonard Davis could move from right guard to left tackle, where he played some in Arizona. Pat McQuistan and Doug Free would be other possibilities.

Let me just say that moving Leonard Davis to LT would be the one of the worst moves Jerry the GM could possible make.

 title=

JJT makes a great point about making a giant trade to move up in the draft:

If Jerry will just take the best skill position players available with the 22nd and 28th picks in the first round, then he will get the young players he needs at wide receiver and running back to make sure the Cowboys have offensive firepower for years.

 title=
Randy Moss is will not hit the free agent market and I am not sad to say that. While it might look nice on paper, bringing Moss to Dallas would have been a horrible move for team chemistry.

Randy Moss is off the table but the possibility of the Cowboys making a play for Javon Walker is still there. Matt Mosely has some inside information that the Cowboys are showing interest in the disgruntled Denver receiver:

I just talked to someone with the Cowboys organization who said the club was interested in Broncos wide receiver Javon Walker. The Broncos would like to move Walker in a trade, but it's hard to imagine that the Cowboys would give up anything of value for a disgruntled player who is coming off an injury-plagued season.

explain to me how moving Davis to LT

would be Jones' call? Wouldn't that be Phillips and Houck's decision?

No kidding....
These media guys keep mentioning Jerry moving Davis but you would think that the coaches would have something to say about that.
You find out life's this game of inches, so is football. Because in either game - life or football - the margin for error is so small.

This misconception becoming ridiculous

The fact that everyone thinks the Cowboys are some autocratic organization that only makes decisions based on Jerry's whim.

Jerry is not going to move Davis to LT.  He is going to discuss it as a possibility with his coaches and staff, where they will agree upon the best course of action.  They would be foolish not to discuss it as a possibility, but in the end, I'd be very surprised if they concluded that moving Davis to left tackle was their best option.

Only a 1st Round Tender?

I'll be interested to see how this plays out... I don't think there would have been a whole lot of interest in Barber if it meant trading a 1st and 3rd, but I've gotta think if it only means a 1st, some team would rather go ahead and move forward with Barber than take their chances with McFadden, Mendenhall, Stewart, whoever...

This could get real interesting over the next week or so...

Dallas still maintains right of refusal

Only tendering MB3 at 1st round doesn't mean he's going anywhere. As Rob Phillips mentioned on DC.com, the Cowboys may be gauging his market value.

I would be PO'd if we lost him. He's a proven gamer, and a core player.

If it's over 5 million/per....

you can forget it....There is no way Jerry is going to pay top tier RB money to a guy who has yet eclipsed the 1,000 mark and hasn't shown he is able to be a consistant featured RB in this league and average over 20 carries a game...He hasn't done it college or the pro's...His running style will only hold him up for so long, He NEEDS a complimentary back to spell him...Do I wish we keep him ?..sure...but do I think Jerry would take a first rounder and run with it...you betcha...

I'd take DMac, Mendenhall, or Stewart over MBIII at this point..with only DMac in position to command more than 5 million/per. And cheaper, younger, and better options in Mendenhall and Stewart out there...why not give it a shot.

Jerry being foolish

"Only tendering MB3 at 1st round doesn't mean he's going anywhere."

On the contrary, I think it means there's a great chance some team with a lot of money and not much at RB will trade a low first round pick for a proven excellent RB by signing him to a poison-pill contract (like the whole contract is guaranteed if he plays 5 games in Texas during 2008).

What team might be interested in doing that?  Well, Miami has the first pick in the 2nd round, it wouldn't take much for them to move into the first round with that pick and another low one and use it to sign Barber, or possibly Chris Canty if he's also tendered at the 1st round level.  Jerry is being pretty foolish if he doesn't tender those two at the 1st and 3rd round level, for the 1/232nd of the salary cap it would take to do so.

by Jamie on Feb 28, 2008 8:35 AM CST up reply actions   0 recs

I would agree with you...but...

If Jerry feels comfortable with replacing Canty with Ratliff in the starting lineup at DE,(which you think he would seeing he just signed him to a long term deal, not Canty)....and...

If you can understand that Jerry is simple infatuated with DMac's potential and would rather trade these 2 1st rounders up to take DMac as the future of our franchise.....or one of the other two top backs which would even cost less than MBIII..

It makes a whole lotta sense...

I think your alot better off looking at it like we are trading 2 4th round picks for 2 1st round picks....what would you do ?

If i'm not mistaken, there was a discussing on here recently on a post that we NEED more of a Pass Rushing DE,( we know Spears' limitations, but I also recall and upgrade of Canty would be welcomed as well) and that most here agreed we should be looking for more playmakers at that position,

Provided Miami trades out of the first pick, and Long is available within picks 2-7.....

How bout if we moved up into the top 2-5 and grabbed DE Chris Long ?? ...ok....Then we selected Mendenhall in the mid first ???

I pose the question,

Would you rather have Barber and Canty, or Long and Mendenhall ?

True Cowboys diehard since 1975.

by BoyzRback07 on Feb 28, 2008 8:53 AM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Barber and Canty

They would cost less, combined, than Long if picked in the top 5 (for 2008, anyway).

Also, I have to say, it's not like any first round RB is a sure thing.  We have a guy who made it already in Barber.  To presume you will draft someone that can be as reliable as him is extremely naive.  Certainly some of these RBs will pan out, but it's likely that not all of them will.  Our team is too good to be taking risks like that, IMO.  We are in our "window" right now in terms of a championship.  Now is not the time for a youth movement, especially when the players in question (Barber and Canty) are already quite young.

by grapejoos on Feb 28, 2008 10:17 AM CST up reply actions   0 recs

I agree, as fans have to keep in mind that

just because Canty and Barber were 4th rd picks doesn't mean they had 4th rd talent. Its my understanding that both Barber and Canty had 2nd rd grades in the 2005 draft.

Canty dropped because of health concerns (possible blindness in one eye) and Barber dropped because he shared the backfield and was overshadowed by Maroney at Minnesota.

In Romo we Trust

by Terry on Feb 28, 2008 10:22 AM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Exactly

These guys have proven themselves to be, at the very least, above average NFL players at their positions.  They are both respected around the league.  That we got them both in the 4th round is easily the biggest draft coup in the Tuna years, probably in the entire league.  It would be such a mistake to let them go to draft some rookie RB that it makes me upset to think about.

Thankfully, I don't think Jerry is that stupid, but man I am afraid of a poison pill.

He has not earned it...and doesn't deserve it...I don't care how you slice it, he hasn't proven anything to me as a 16 game, every down, featured  starter yet....

But now...if MBIII leaves...WE HAVE NO RUNNING BACKS!

RB is the one position that can be interchangable

Michael Turner and Felix Jones looks pretty good to me..... ??????

And that is the route this team will ultimately go.....you watch....Wade knows RB's...Wade watched Turner every day for 3 years...MBIII for one year....I personally think Turner is better than MBIII....And to some extent...I bet Wade feels the same way.....

Turner has breakaway speed, and has proved it with several home run carries in his career....He holds a career rushing average of over 5.5 yards per carry.....mop up, spot duty, whatever it matters..it was done on a team that basically has no fearful passing game at all....And he is a 235lbs bowling ball...as much power as MBIII and plays with a very low center of gravity. He is never driven backwards...and always falls forward ,churning his legs at all times..power and speed..liken to Preist Holmes in his prime.

I wanted Turner last year.....I want him even more now...MBIII gone....Burner Turner in....wooo hooo...

Yeah But....

what if a team prices us out of the market?
By overpaying MBIII they can and will take him away.
Say a Team such as atlanta, who at the #3 pick would have to pay 50-60 mil for a top notch RB could easily pay Barber 30-40Mil save money and have a pro-bowl RB.

Another senario...don't know if this is legal...but could a team trade picks with....say the giants...then make MBIII an offer based on that #31 pick?

That would suck to lose MBIII over a basically 2nd rounder!

I can only imagine Turner would wait to see what kind of contract MBIII gets, to gauge his worth....

I think MBIII will get more than Turner...only cuz he was more exposed and has better overall numbers to present to teams...not saying at all that he is better...cuz that has yet to be determined....by the end of next season...we'll see who the better back is.

Ideally..I'd love to sign Turner...and STILL have 3 1st rounders...to address CB, WR, and a RB to compliment Turner, or a top OL.

I think Jerry made a good move offering MB3

the first round tender only.  Many seem to think we need a first round draft pick at RB since MB3 is not a full time starter.  Well, if you are right then why in the world would someone give up a first rounder, give MB3 a big contract and still have the need for another big-time back.  Nobody would do that.  So Jerry is saving a cool half million.  Besides look at the plethora of backs in the draft.

If Jerry's plan

See post from the Chicago fan above

MB3 is a pro bowl RB.  Other teams already have RBs that can help carry the load.  I am terrified that some team with huge cap space is going to front-load the hell out of some deal and give us another crappy first round pick.  I'm not saying it will happen, but it basically gives teams a chance to "draft" a proven, fan favorite, pro bowl RB.  I know I would rather have that than a rookie who could be a total bust if I had the cap space.

No. Tampa's making a run at Asante Samuel.

Plus, I read that they're also looking at Bernard Berrian -- together with Minnesota.

They still have Earnest Graham (who's coming off a career season), and they just re-signed Michael Bennett.  In addition, the Bucs are also in the hunt for DeShaun Foster -- along with San Francisco.

And like True said regarding Cadillac's career-threatening knee injury, Tampa Bay could use a draft pick on a RB, too.

I don't see them in the mix for the Barbarian.

Is the Poison Pill still in play?

I wouldn't be surprised at all if some team would rather take Barber than take their chances with Stewart/Mendenhall/Jones in the first round...

Some team would easily put a clause in his contract that says he cannot play more than 4 games with a star on his helmet next year, or his entire contract becomes guaranteed... And we'd have no chance to match.
