Sources: Cowboys trading Ferguson

The Dallas Morning News is reporting the Cowboys will trade Jason Ferguson to the Miami Dolphins.

Will update with the details as they come available.

Update [2008-2-29 11:47:32 by Brandon]: Todd Archer gives the details:

The Cowboys and Dolphins will swap sixth-round picks this year and the Cowboys will receive Miami's sixth-rounder in 2009. The order of the picks in the '08 draft will be revealed when the league sets the compensatory picks at the NFL owners' meetings. But the Cowboys will have the first pick in the sixth round based on Miami's 1-15 record last season.

This trade was mainly about freeing up cap space and the Cowboys essentially received two sixth round draft picks. I was hoping for something higher but I am happy with this.

Just talking to Grizz

And made the point that it will be cool to pick late in the 5th and turn around and have the first pick in the 6th.

You find out life's this game of inches, so is football. Because in either game - life or football - the margin for error is so small.

sixth round pick this year

is pretty much a fifth round pick. Not bad, we weren't going to get alot for an aging Nose tackle.

Trade up a few spots to get ahead of Houston and draft Jonathan Stewart, thee best all around Back in the draft.

I wouldn't mind keeping Fergie

Good NT's are very hard to find, but given how the Rat did, I am sure Jerry can be bought.

I would rather someone showed real interest in our strong safety - he has had too many chances - but his time may come next year when Hamlin will no doubt be resigned.

I think there is something else behind this deal

With dallas getting the swap of sixth round picks this year, You might see Dallas trade their fifth rounder to Denver for Walker. Denver really cant expect much more for Walker than s fifth rounder, can they??

we'd take on Walkers roster bonus...no thanks...

from what i read, we would have to come up with his 4 million roster bonus...no thanks...let denver cut him by next week..you'll see..

we wait till he is cut and sign him to a cap friendly deal...after an extensive physical.

I dont want the guy, period

but with how Jerry loves a player, he tends to get tunnel vision

meh

freeing up cash, i suppose..

Better use the money and use it on someone good...

by Longhorn on Feb 29, 2008 11:22 AM CST   0 recs

my thoughts exactly...

we need the cap room, so might as well get something in return.

by nonotmenever on Feb 29, 2008 11:30 AM CST to parent up   0 recs

Yeah

This was purely a cap move.  But, to the extent that you can get something for an aging NT coming off a season-ending injury, it's not terrible.  I think we all would have rather kept Fergy, all things being equal, but this frees up precious cap space we need for Flo, MB3, Canty, Ware, Newman, etc.

So what about Tank?

He maintains his role behind the Rat?

I'm good with that.

They need to get a real NT

A big, strong, space eating giant. So that Thomas will have some degree of protection to be the playmaker we are hoping he still can be. Then Ratliff can start in Spears place at End.

That's one guy that fits the profile

He's more likely a 3rd round. But since Dallas picks at the very bottom of the 3rd, we might need to move to get him. Since the draft's 1st day ends after the 2nd round this year, there's a chance Dallas could trade down with that 2nd round pick and position themselves near the top of the 3rd.

The Cowboys saved $2.4 million

Dealing Ferguson clears about $2.4 million on this year's salary cap.

Wow

Thats quite a bit of cap space. Good move.

by GloryDayz88 on Feb 29, 2008 12:53 PM CST   0 recs

I like the move for salary reasons

But can't bother thinking we could have come away with a bigger return.
And that Javon Walker trade is not happening, people. Nobody's asinine enough to pay him 8 mil+ for next year.

Deke, I used your quote to respond to Bud's post

And of course, I was referring to da King.

In other words, I wasn't referring to you as asinine.

Sorry if that didn't come across clearer.  My bust.

Supposedly, he's been cut

We're free to make our move without paying him as much as our quarterback. =D
