One with Dunn: Why we'd be lucky to have him

Who is Warrick Dunn? And why should we want him?

He’s a 5 ft. 9, 180 pound ball of determination. He’s a 33-year-old warrior. A staple of those early Tampa Bay, grind-it-out, play-good-D teams. He took the big money to go to ATL. There he combined with Michael Vick to create one of the best running attacks in recent memory.

What does he bring to the table? Probably his most definable trait is his leadership. Seriously. He was 18-years-old when his mother, an off-duty police officer, was ambushed and killed in an armed robbery. He immediately became the father, mother and breadwinner for his family. He came to peace with these demons and he won the Walter Payton Man of the Year Award in 2004. You think the glare of the Dallas media bothers him? You think he’ll whiff in the face of an oncoming blitz? No. Not at all.

He is also versatile and a tough runner. Julius Jones has the tendency to fall down after initial contact and lose yards where tougher runners might pick up an extra two or three. Dunn falls in the latter category. He is small but tough. He will not leave yards on the field. Also he’s a threat as a receiver out of the backfield. He’s caught more than 50 catches three times in his career. Last year, splitting time with Jerious Norwood, he still caught 37 passes. As bad as the ‘Boys have historically been at running the screen, Dunn might be the perfect candidate to run it. He’s small, he’s shifty and he can hide behind our massive offensive lineman. I’m sure the Redhead Genius would work wonders with the screen play and Dunn.

Dunn has also seen the mountain top but he’s never ascended it. Dallas may represent his last shot at a Super Bowl. He got close in Tampa Bay. He’s gone to a couple of NFC Championship Games with the Bucs and ATL. But he’s never been on a team loaded with offensive talent. In Tampa, it was the Dunn-Alstott show. That’s it. In Atlanta, it was Vick and the Vickettes. Basically him, Alge Crumpler and ... that’s it. Those were Vick’s only weapons.

I’m sure he’d relish the chance to be on a team featuring T.O., Witten, Romo and MB3. So much talent, speed and skill. A massive offensive line. He could easily become a Kevin Faulk-type do-it-all back for our offense, picking up 10 to 12 yards on checkdowns and dumpoffs and accumulating yardage while spelling our workhorse. Sometimes it takes a loaded offensive roster to bring out the specific skills of a player. Think Wes Welker in New England, a shifty slot receiver who benefits from the speed of Randy Moss. Think Ryan Grant, a journeyman back who benefitted from a plethora of talent at the receiver position in Green Bay. Think Dallas Clark, a pass-catching tight end who benefits from the speed of Reggie Wayne and Marvin Harrison. Dunn would be an added dimension that would be hard to account for with TWB (T.O., Witten and Barber) on the field.

No one is diminishing his negatives. He's old. He's got some wear and tear. He's had some injuries in the past. He's lost a step. He's small. He's not going to run over anybody or run through an entire defense like MB3.

That being said, Dunn's addition could be a very beneficial proposition to an already potent offense.

There’s a moment in Pulp Fiction when Jules and Vincent Vega are celebrating prematurely. The Wolf is working his magic and they are impressed. He gently tells them not to get too excited. There’s more work to be done. To put it gently.

You didn’t really expect the division to just concede to us? Did you? Did you think the Eagles would roll over and allow us to dominate them for the next decade? Think the Giants are satisfied with their rings? Waiting for the Deadskins to finally pull their heads out of ... the sand?

Focusing particularly on the Eagles, the answer is a resounding no. They’ve signed Asante Samuel. They made a big play for Moss. And they’re in the same market we’re in – looking for an impact receiver.

A lot of the free agent wide receivers are gone. Javon Walker is still out there and we want him. But the Eagles have more money than us and have been more aggressive than we have in free agency so far. Could they come in and scoop him? It’s a possibility. Nothing more they’d rather do than to address a need on their team and snatch a possible solution for ours.

Which brings us to Larry Fitzgerald. There are reports that he’s available. Others aren’t so sure. But the Eagles have made no secret of their desire to get him. He’s the worst type of receiver to see twice a year. He’s big and fast. He can jump. He’s got good hands. He’s a good teammate and a team player. And he’s willing to fit into to win because he’s got individual achievements.

Sounds like someone who’d be great along side of T.O. and to eventually replace him. So why aren't the ‘Boys making a play? Again, part of our slow-motion free agency plan. The 'Boys would rather call it spending wisely. The Eagles have been more aggressive. Will it come back to haunt us?

I refuse to believe we’re done in free agency or that we’ll solve all our problems through the draft. Part of our cautious free agency approach is due to necessity as explained here. That’s fine. I get that. What I don’t understand is where it goes from here.

But you know what? I didn’t know about Hamlin last year. I didn’t know about Zach Thomas this year. Jerry Jones doesn’t send me faxes on his future free agency plans. But if I were to guess, I’d say Jerry Jones isn’t through and our thin cornerback pool necessitates some type of move. It’s coming. I just wish I knew what it was. And I wish a team with more money, and it seems, a more aggressive attitude wasn’t breathing down our neck.

After kicking around this idea with Grizz, I’d like to introduce a new item on the blog called the Hat Tip Award, named for Grizz and his affable way of signaling to readers. I would love to say I’ll do this weekly. But I’m thinking of something more along the lines of once every two weeks.

The point of the award is to highlight interesting, thought-provoking or prophetic comments by users. Something funny or infuriating. Something deep or ridiculously shallow. Basically it’s just a way to give props to the comments on this site. This is a grassroots site. A movement if you will. We follow Grizz and his lead but the site works because of how interactive it is. The people who comment on this site are pretty damn smart and insightful for the most part. Just seems right to acknowledge and celebrate it.

Here’s how the process goes. I look through stories and diaries and find maybe five of the most interesting comments. I highlight those and then choose the top one. Anybody who wants to disagree or nominate comments, feel free.

I would not mind Dunn

He could fill the role of 2nd RB nicely, but the Cowboys are still going to draft a RB high in April so he may also just hinder the development of that player.

You could even compare Dunn coming into Dallas just like Zach Thomas coming in.

But I tend to think Dunn going to Tampa for a visit means he would probably sign for cheap to 'go back home'. I expect him to be a Buc this season and end his career there.

Go Cowboys!

Still wondering

Just as I left a post, I read about the interest in Warrick Dunn.  Makes no sense to me.  Getting an old RB is not a good idea.  Did anyone see how rookies with the Giants (Steve Smith, Bradshaw) brought speed and athletic ability to propel the team?

This is a deep draft for RB.  I hope that Jerry is wiser and realizes he should draft a RB and DB and find out if there is anyway he can trade for the heir apparent to TO.

Pass on Dunn, Fitz too expensive

So why aren't the ‘Boys making a play? Again, part of our slow-motion free agency plan. The 'Boys would rather call it spending wisely. The Eagles have been more aggressive. Will it come back to haunt us?

Simple, we can't afford him. Even the Eagles who have more cap space would have to cut some players to sign him. The Eagles offered Arizona, Sheppard and a 2nd round pick and they said no.

I'm passing on Dunn. Too old. We need to draft a RB to compliment MB3, not an old RB on the decline. The money would be better spent elsewhere.

Exactly

Fitz is due to make $31 million dollars over the next year, why would he want to restructure his contract? There is no way we could afford him, though I would love to have him. I really hope Arizona doesn't trade him to Philly, it would make an already tough division match-up that much more difficult.

As far as Dunn goes, I'd take him if he were willing to sign a similar structured contract to what Thomas signed, hopefully with smaller bonuses.

Dunn Would Be A Fine Pickup

I watched alot of Falcons games the last few years.  I can say that Dunn still has a few good years left.  I haven't seen him slow down much, if at all.  Last year he showed he still has game breaking ability ripping off a 90 yard TD run.

Dunn is a high character guy who would be a great leader on our offense.  8 to 10 carries a game to keep him fresh and spell MB3 seems like a great idea to me.  He may even agree to sign a very reasonable contract to end his career on a contender.

by ZachR on Mar 4, 2008 8:18 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

Maybe

but I'm hoping he signs with Tampa Bay. I'm sure he has some left, but we need a younger RB. There are a bunch of good young RB's in this class. Dunn would just stunt the growth of the next guy.

stunt growth ??...

Having Dunn on the roster would be the best thing ever imaginable for a rookies growth and development.
A rookie who has no damn clue what it's like at this level....Warrick Dunn is what a RB is supposed to be. pound for pound, one of the best ever.

I want Dunn just for that very reason...

will you guys get off his age.....

geeez...We're looking for a 3rd RB in FA....not a complimentary to MBIII..

We ARE going to draft a first day RB, I have no doubts...MBIII is as good as gone if you ask me...either before or after this season...not like I want him to be gone, but I'm almost certain there is something that's going to go down between now, and after the season for me to believe so.

In the mean time...We would be better served to add a RB that has intangibles, in the way of, receiving skills, leadership qualities, mentoring components, and heart, and desire to win a championship...

My first thoughts were to actually draft two RB's in this years draft, One in the first, then another in the later rounds..and I still wouldn't mind if we went that route...BUT,

We really should have a veteran in the backfield...in case an injury was to happen to MBIII, or if he wasn't being effective, or needs a blow....A rookie can't be asked to know blitz pick ups, or to carry the load, or know all the defensive schemes, etc. etc..

I don't want just any vet...I want a vet that is here for more than just what he thinks he can bring to the table...cuz I'm not looking for a vet to come in and expect more than maybe 10 plays a game...I want a vet that's a good cheerleader, and team player...A vet that knows he's only here for a short term, A vet that wants to be part of a championship..A vet that thinks his experience and knowledge can be helpful and doesn't mind taking a rookie under his wing, show him the ropes, critque his flaws, help him out...more of a player/ coach type....

I want a vet like Warrick Dunn................

I can't understand why fans want

another #1 WR to team up with T.O. as there is only so much money a team can invest in its receivers. We are paying T.O., Witten big money and just signed Crayton to a decent contract.

It just cracks me up when fans say, "lets sign Randy Moss, lets trade for Larry Fitzgerald", those are just ridiculous comments as there is no way any team can afford 2 superstars at one position, can't be done because of the cap.

Furthermore, we all know superstar WRs are all basically prima donas who need to have the ball thrown at them several times a game.

What the Cowboys need is a legitimate, solid, fast #2 receiver who is willing to work in the shadow of T.O. Think another Crayton, but fast and explosive.
Somebody who is willing to be a decoy or take double teams off of T.O., even if it means he won't catch a lot of passes or TDs.

Thats what this team needs at the WR position, not another #1 superstar prima dona. We already have one of those and it looks like we'll have him probably for another 3 years.

Crayton's contract

is cheap. They paid him #3 WR money. We need a #2 which we don't have on this roster.

you're right, we have 2 #1s and #3

If Glenn is healthy, he's definitely as good as most #1 receivers in the league.

I agree when Glenn is

healthy he is a #1, but I think those days are done. We have a #1 and a bunch of #3's and #4's on this team now.

Glenn and his 5.6mil makes him #2

Until he is retired, I wouldn't worry about picking up any #2 WR with 7+ mil/per contracts.

you can't judge a WR by his salary

TG is clearly a #1 receiver in this league when healthy, there is absolutely no question about that.

i agree Terry......

draft a speedster in the 2nd-4th range and let him run fly patterns the whole game...wear out the CB's...

Dunn da dunn dunn...

... is not done. (da done done donnnnne....)

I'm encouraged by the signing of Flozell, and the hire of Hudson Houck.  This offensive line should be one of the finest in the league in 08, and having a hungry young back like MB3 backed up by a hungry vet like WD would only be an upgrade from the last few years.

It's not like we can bring back Emmitt Smith - he's too busy fueling the blogosphere with his inspiring commentary.

But remember - Emmitt did it by himself.  (Can you name his backup for any of the Super Bowl years?)  MB3 has genuine ability, and having someone like Dunn at his side could only enhance his potential.

Dunn brings character to any team - more that can be said for certain RB's waiting to be top draft picks.
