Dat Nguyen announces his retirement

Dallas Cowboys LB Dat Nguyen announced his formal retirement from the NFL today. I've written many times on this blog about the amount of respect I have for Dat as a person and my admiration for what he was able to do on the field. The Cowboys couldn't have had a better player representing them over his career.

Dat's story is a familiar one. He was born to Vietnamese parents in an American refugee camp at the close of the Vietnam War. Nguyen, despite his limited size rises to the top of his chosen profession using a tireless work ethic and a continual belief in his own abilities.

OK, so that is in no way a familiar story, which is why Dat Nguyen was special.

Good luck in your post-football career and I'm sure the rest of the Cowboys fans join me in thanking you for your great service to the Dallas franchise.

Last word to Dat:

"I wasn't supposed to be here in the first place," Nguyen said. "I wasn't supposed to play in college. I wasn't supposed to play in the NFL. It's been almost icing on the cake."
