I have no idea what to make of Terrell Owens anymore. I just finished watching his interview with Bryant Gumbel and I would estimate that I heard Bryant Gumbel's voice for 3/4 of the interview and Terrell's voice for the other 1/4. He was so soft-spoken and miserly with his answers, it was like an Invasion of the Body Snatchers incident. He was a pod person. The guy is just a strange paradox, he seems to know that he 's wrong, but something inside him keeps him from admitting it. Even when he does admit it, like he did by saying he takes the blame for the Jeff Garcia stuff, you still get the feeling it doesn't really sink in.
The most interesting exchange of the whole interview came at the end.
Gumbel: "You like Terrell Owens?" Owens smiled and nodded his head yes.
Gumbel: "Do you like T.O.?"
Owens: Terrell paused for a moment, searching for his answer, then smiled broadly and said "I gotta love him...you gotta love him...a lotta fans love him."
Gumbel: "However, comma," asking for him to expand on the answer.
Owens: "You can't have one without the other."
In some strange way I think that sums it up. Instead of saying "yes I love T.O." he said "I gotta love him". It was very Dr. Jekyl and Mr. Hyde. There's this side of him he can't contain - even if he wanted to - so he's built a world where he loves T.O. and convinced himself that the rest of us also love T.O. When the truth is we don't, but we wouldn't mind Terrell Owens at all.
