New defensive coordinator?

This little nugget was buried deep within an article about the search for the Chargers new head coach.

[Ron] Rivera was highly complimentary of offensive line coach Jack Henry, defensive line coach Wayne Nunnely and defensive backs coach Brian Stewart. However, it is likely if the Chargers head coach is hired quickly, as expected, Stewart will ask to not be retained in order to become Wade Phillips' defensive coordinator in Dallas.

A quick Stewart bio:

Head Coach Marty Schottenheimer completed his staff when he appointed former Houston Texans assistant defensive backs coach Brian Stewart to coach the Chargers' secondary. Stewart joins the Chargers after spending two years (2002-03) on Houston's staff.

Stewart, 39, is a veteran of 11 seasons as a coach. Prior to his stint with the Texans, he was the defensive backs coach at Syracuse University.

Brian Stewart's Coaching Experience
2004-2006: Defensive Backs, San Diego Chargers
2002-03: Assistant Defensive Backs, Houston Texans
2001: Defensive Backs, Syracuse
1999-2000: Defensive Backs, University of Missouri
1997-98: Defensive Backs, San Jose State

  1. Defensive Graduate Assistant, University of Missouri
  2. Tight Ends/Offensive Special Teams, Northern Arizona
  3. Running Backs, Cal Poly-San Luis Obispo
  4. Wide Receivers, Cal Poly-San Luis Obispo
