Cowboys begin serious negotiations with Colombo

Marc Colombo and Mat McBriar updates from the DFW S-T.

The Cowboys have opened formal discussions with the agent who represents starting right tackle Marc Colombo, according to a source. Colombo is one of the team's six potential unrestricted free agents. The free agency period begins Friday.

The club is also discussing a new deal for Pro Bowl punter Mat McBriar, who can become a restricted free agent.

Brian Stewart update:

It took awhile, but the Cowboys finally have received permission from San Diego to talk to secondary coach Brian Stewart.

The Cowboys officially filed the paperwork on Monday, believed to be the third request since they hired Wade Phillips. At the NFL Scouting Combine, Phillips and Chargers coach Norv Turner spoke about Stewart, and the Chargers finally relented after having hired two defensive backs coaches, including Baylor's Bill Bradley.
