Chris Mortensen was on SportsCenter tonight saying that he now believes Wade Phillips is the frontrunner in the search for a new head coach. Now, Mort didn't cite anything specific that makes him think that, but he seems to be joining some other journalists who have been hinting that it might be Phillips.
Earlier today, I posted Len Pasquarelli's article, and Todd Archer's post, both reminding us that Phillips is still in the mix. Now we have Mort calling him the frontrunner, and John Clayton is jumping in, too.
For more than a week, Jones has juggled two main choices -- Phillips and 49ers offensive coordinator Norv Turner. Turner seemed the most likely to get the job. But the more Jones studies the situations, the more it appears he's leaning toward Phillips, whose expertise is a 3-4 defense and who is happy with letting Jason Garrett be the offensive play-caller.
I'm going to try and not get my hopes up, because I don't want to be severely disappointed when Jerry names Norv Turner coach. But this late surge towards Wade Phillips at least allows me to maintain some belief that he will get the job.
