Draft press conference

Jerry Jones and Wade Phillips held a press conference a few minutes ago. Here are the basic thought processes as explained by JJ and WP.

Isaiah Stanback is a WR. They pretty much left no doubt about that. Phillips is excited about the guy for the same reasons I pointed out below. He’s 6’ 2", 216 lbs. and can run in the 4.3’s. He’s shown excellent running ability from the QB position and has played WR before. If the kid can catch the ball, with that kind of athletic ability, he should be able to make an impact. They plan to also use him on special teams. In addition, the intangibles are supposed to be very high – smart, a leader, a great teammate.

Jerry was just overjoyed because he thinks he won’t have to pay Flozell Adams big money after this year. He didn’t exactly say that, but the way he kept gushing about how James Marten and Doug Free gives him options on the offensive line for the future, it wasn’t hard to figure out what he was implying, with both guys playing tackle. Jerry slipped in a little nugget about Pat McQuistan and his possible move to guard.

Wade seemed like the guy behind the kicker. Drafting kickers is anathema to Jerry, and Wade was the one talking about getting more depth on the kickoffs, and he dropped some stats on us for emphasis. They want Nick Folk to kickoff; they probably want him to win the job outright. But they at least want him to kickoff. Phillips even dropped the name Morton Andersen on us as an example from back in his coaching history.

Not much was said about the corners except that they can run so they liked that. They do like fullback Deon Anderson because Wade Phillips is a big fullback guy. Anderson’s a big kid who has pretty good hands out of the backfield. Wade said Anderson plays fullback the way they want a guy to play fullback. From the kid’s scouting report, they must want a bruiser who can catch. They want Moose.

I'll have a review of the full draft up later tonight, and I’ll be on the DCFanatic Radio Show again tonight at 10 pm EST. Tune in if you can.
