Part of the reason why Bryan McCann was called up from the practice squad earlier this week is to provide some depth in the secondary. Akwasi Owusu-Ansah is out with a high-ankle sprain, and Terence Newman is hobbled with rib injuries.
The other reason is that the Cowboys need to replace Akwasi Owusu-Ansah as a kickoff returner. SMU graduate McCann has blazing speed, per this report from his Pro Day workout:
On his first attempt at the 40 - Ford Stadium’s field is not thought of as a particularly fast track - McCann clocked a sizzling 4.32 … a time made more impressive by the fact that he ran it in to the wind. When the runners reversed directions, he ran even faster, clocking a 4.28, which is .15 seconds faster than any cornerback ran at the NFL Combine last month.
With Dez Bryant, the Cowboys seem to have found the answer at punt returner. Bryan McCann now gets a chance on the big stage to show what he's got. With a little bit of luck, Coach Joe DeCamillis may have found his answer in the return game with Dez & Bryan.
