Our continuing series looking at the Top 10 Biggest Draft Busts Of The Jerry Jones Era rolls on with #1. The guidelines - Must have been drafted during Jerry Jones' era (1989 - present), needs to be a player chosen in the 1st or 2nd round. Anybody below that is excused for sucking. It's not a list of the worst players, but a list of the worst value to the team, based on lack of contributions and when they were drafted. Also, certain intangibles can be thrown into the mix.
1. Bobby Carpenter (2006, 1st round, #18, OLB, Ohio State)
We had to do it. Bobby Carpenter was the #18 overall pick in the draft, and started only three games for Dallas. After four years, the Cowboys finally admitted their mistake and traded Carpenter. His greatest contributions came on special teams. I'll leave it to OCC and rabblerousr to explain....
OCC: Bobby Carpenter started three games in four years for Dallas, and was traded to the Rams for Alex Barron in 2010. The Rams promptly released him. He then signed on with Miami, who also promptly released him. He is now with the Lions where he will battle John Wendling (6th round pick) and Ashlee Palmer (UDFA) for a roster spot.
rabblerousr: Carpenter's father played with Parcells NYG teams. Sadly, the fruit fell pretty far from the tree. And from a toughness standpoint, he made Jacob Rogers look like Jack Youngblood.
Dave: I also wanted to give a special shoutout to a Bust that OCC had on his list - Steve Walsh. He was taken #1 overall! Ok, that was in the supplemental, but still. Since it wasn't a regular draft, we didn't include him in the list. But it was a great catch by OCC, and was definitely a bust in Dallas.
