The Silver Lining

Yes, I was bummed, angry, disappointed, and all that last night. But I still saw the silver lining in all of this. Let's start at the beginning. This season started off with everyone writing the Cowboys off, let me count the ways. 1. Horrible season last year. 2. New defense that will never learn the new system in time. 3. Young O-line that is not experienced enough to protect Romo. 4. No solid FG kicker. 5. No big names bought in Free agency. Not only was everyone predicting them to lose opening night, they were predicting a 8-8 season for them, maybe a threat next year.

By halftime I saw the "experts," start to eat their words. Wow, I had no idea the defense was that good. That the offense was so aggressive. We had a solid lead and a even more solid chance at a win. Now, before everyone wants to hang or fire or bench Romo let's remember a few things. He grew a lot these last 2 seasons with Kitna as his mentor which is half the reason they got Kitna,(the other half being he can win a game.) He organized the player only workouts during the lock out which had good attendance and kept most players in shape and sharp. Now I know the fumble sucked but I felt it was neutralized by the fact the the defense got the ball back with a fumble on Sanchez. He had nothing to do with the blocked punt that tied the game.

Now we get to the big one, the interception, yes that sucked worst of all. However I don't blame it all on Romo. Bryant shouldn't have been out there. He never recovered from the cramp he got out there. He couldn't run the way he can run, couldn't catch the way he can catch, couldn't play the way he can play. The problem with some NFL players is they have so much pride they want to play even when their hurt. The problem with that is they sometimes become more of a liability than an asset. Many seasons ago McNabb insisted on playing for the Eagles despite a bruised thumb and he lost 3 games out of 4 before his thumb healed. Garrett should have pulled Bryant out. I'm sure he wouldn't have liked it and would have protested but Garrett is the coach and what he says goes.

Yes, we lost, and that sucks. But I saw a defense that did execute against what might be the best offense in the NFL. I saw an offense score points against what is the best or 2nd best defense in the NFL. I saw us come within a hair of beating a very possible Super Bowl team. Let me remind everyone of two things in closing. First, a lot of teams have, "growing pains," early in the season especially a team learning so many new things and with so many new players like this one. And lastly everyone wrote off the Packers last year when Rodgers came back from injury to win the last two games and get the Packers a wild card slot, and we all know how that turned out. Can the same lightning strike for the Cowboys. Time will tell. And I'm hopeful.
