BTB's 2012 Community Mock And Prospect Profile: Jacksonville And Miami Attack Weaknesses

2012 BTB Community Mock Draft
2012 BTB Community Mock Draft

Now we're rolling. Skill position selections are always ones that get the blood boiling; Tampa and St. Louis selecting Trent Richardson and Justin Blackmon back-to-back certainly does that. Regardless of what teams need to build themselves into contenders, players that score touchdowns move the meter like no other. Now we move on to the next two sets of teams, selections #7 and #8, the Jacksonville Jaguars and Miami Dolphins respectively.

Both teams had decent defenses last year that were thwarted (in Miami's case, at least to start the season) by lackluster offenses. Jacksonville has human pinball Maurice Jones-Drew at tailback and not much else, but Miami looked to be developing some offensive chemistry once their season was a lost cause. Matt Moore, former Cowboy, is still in the fold for now as the team's quarterback and Reggie Bush finally became a regular contributor. Their wideout diva, Brandon Marshall, however, was traded off to Chicago for draft picks after being a thorn in the side of management. Let's head to the podium to see which direction these teams go.

Draft Pick # 7

Team Name: Jacksonville Jaguars

GM: I don't Rent I'm a Romowner

Selection: (DE) Quinton Coples

Draft Pick # 8

Team Name: Miami Dolphins

GM: KD (filling in again)

Selection: (OT) Riley Reiff

Draft Pick # 7

Team Name: Jacksonville Jaguars

GM: I don't Rent I'm a Romowner

Selection: (DE) Quinton Coples

Newly minted head coach Mike Mularkey inherits a team with a potentially shutdown defense and an offense in need of talent beyond the 5'7" shoulders of the seemingly unstoppable ½ stick of dynamite known as Maurice Jones-Drew. Rieff, DeCastro, Floyd, and even Melvin Ingram (not such a great football name btw, sounds like an accountant from the 50's) were strong possibilities, but in the end Coples was too perfect of a fit to pass up.

One of the top physical specimens in the entire draft and a player compared to fellow alum Julius Peppers, Quinton Coples destroyed his competition in the ACC on a regular basis, whether he was lined up inside or outside on the defensive line. It is true his numbers dipped a bit in his senior year after switching positions, and thus the questions regarding his heart and commitment, but the argument can and has been made that he was grossly misused.

Every coin, however, has two distinct sides. Some front offices are scared of his attitude and drop off in production this past year. Others point to his admitting a lack of effort on many occasions. Heck, the guy even gave his own overall 2011 effort a grade of "C" in a national interview recently. He has red flags to be sure.

But this isn't what new owner Shahid Kahn is all about (just look at his impressive mustache). He bought a floundering franchise with a depressed fanbase and lackluster ticket sales. After losing out on the Tebow sweepstakes, Jacksonville hedged their bets on the offense signing the likes of Chad Henne and Laurent Robinson (was that too soon to bring up?), and with this pick they go all in on the defense, undoubtedly raising the overall talent level of the team in the process, and hopefully making their 2012 and beyond on-field product more marketable in the process (if not, Mexico City, here come the Yaguars!!!)

Draft Pick # 8

Team Name: Miami Dolphins

GM: KD (filling in again)

Selection: (OT) Riley Reiff

Why in the world would Miami draft a QB with a year and a half experience (thus, not fulfilling the 26-27-60 rule) when they have Tony Romo 2.0 that kicked major tail down the stretch of the season. No, they focus on their major need, right tackle, and will build a team the right way, instead of gambling on the supposed third-best QB in the draft.
